SQUID GAME MANAGES TO UP THE ANTE WITHOUT AS MUCH AS BY YOUR LEAVE—AND HOW !

Squid Game is, based on your own varying ability to suspend disbelief and ignore plot holes, an enjoyable romp that does its job of keeping you on your bum with your eyes glued to the screen for its roughly 8 hours of runtime.
For those people who have a Netflix account and are still on the fence about whether you’d like it or not just answer one simple question, ‘Do you like dramas with a lot of violence and gore?’
If yes, jump right in! If no, or you’re just burned out on violent and depressing media, Squid Game is not going to do anything special for you.
Don’t get the wrong idea. Squid Game is topping Netflix charts for good reasons.
It is well directed, has a lot of visual flairs, great shot compositions, a memorable soundtrack, and amazing performances all around from all of the actors involved (except for whoever they got to play the MVPs). This especially goes for the fantastic performance by the actress, Kim Joo-Ryeong, who plays Player no. 212. She steals every scene she’s in and I couldn’t help but love hating that wretched woman who seemed to purposely be put there by the game master to make the lives of everyone on that Island just that little bit more torturous.
On a technical level, no one can take anything away from how solid Squid Game is. But if you’re going into it with expectations of some deep meaningful story or thought-provoking social commentary, look elsewhere.
A lot of people have been talking about Squid Game’s commentary on capitalism and the true value of money vs having real happiness. But these themes are often skin deep at best, and only serve as a means to add flavor to the personal drama between the characters and to make their backstories sympathetic.
Makes sense, doesn’t it? If all the desperate people that were partaking in these dehumanizing death games for the mere chance at having more money than they could spend were all irredeemable scumbags or criminals the audience wouldn’t have anyone to cheer for or get emotionally invested in, now would they?
The violence, the viscera, and the gross commodification of human life all just add up to give an extra cheap shock and gross-out factor to the viewers, no different from any movie from the Slasher or Horror genre.
A perfect example of this would be the now infamous organ harvesting bits from the story. I don’t think even mentioning this can be considered a spoiler for anyone reading this as it was probably one of the first things you heard about from people trying to get you to watch the series.
A shocking and disturbing revelation when we first find out about it, sure. But one that opens up to a lot of questions and plot holes if you spend more than a second to think about the logistics behind all of it.
When and how did this secret group of guards get together to put this whole secret operation underway? It was already shown in the show at that point that revealing your face or breaking anonymity among the guards was forbidden, with the penalty being death. Even when they were by themselves they kept referring to each other by their assigned code numbers, showing that they didn’t personally know each other. Heck, the reason the undercover cop even accidentally stumbled upon their operation was that he took the mask off one of their members who got publicly executed in front of the other guards after his face got revealed and the anonymity rule got breached. So no, they didn’t know what each other looked or sounded like. This is never explained or elaborated on.
How did they manage to build that faux cremator with the trap door that dropped the bodies straight to their secret underground organ harvesting basement? How did they keep it a secret from the ring leaders? Even if they had a person on the inside that tampered with the camera feeds, wouldn’t the other guards notice that a few of them went missing for long hours at a time to both help with the organ harvesting and then immediately swim off the island to deliver them to some team who was waiting outside, off the island? This is especially nonsensical considering the curfew and strict rules and guidelines that the guards themselves had to follow as terms of their employment.
Why would they do something as dumb as putting their surgeon, the most important person that the entire operation relied on, in the death game itself? Even if they kept giving him answers on what the next game was going to be he still had a fair chance of failing his game and getting killed. Especially the team-based ones.
And again, the presence of the surgeon himself opens up another slimy can of worms.
How did the guards approach him and specifically make sure to recruit him into the games? He couldn’t possibly have been a previous winner of the games or he would already have had all the money he ever needed to not be involved in something as risky as this. Again the guards never took off their masks around him or speak to each other by name. Meaning he didn’t know any of them either. Why would any person agree to do something so life-risking with a bunch of people he never knew or trusted to begin with?
And this is not even getting into other plot contrivances that come up when one stops to think about the messy way the undercover cop sneaks his way onto and roams around the island, or the final big character reveal that happens in the last episode that almost retroactively ruined the story for me.
So please, from all of this, don’t think of Squid Game as some sort of deep thinker’s series. It does fall apart when you analyze or think too much about different important plot points that come up throughout the show.
If you’re going to see it, know that you’re getting into a show that is on a technical level superbly put together, has plenty of high-stakes drama, and is very shocking and gratuitous for the thrill of being shocking and gratuitous. And hey, if Squid Game winds up being a portal for you to start enjoying a lot of other superb pieces of Korean media like ‘Old Boy’ or ‘I saw the Devil’, that’d be pretty swell too.
