According to the agriculture ministry, Rs. 50,000 crore worth of food produced is wasted every year in the country.

Even though the world produces enough food to feed twice the world’s present population, food wastage is ironically behind the billions of people who are malnourished.

Food wastage cripples a country’s economy to an extent that most of us are unaware. If food is wasted, there is so much waste of water used in agriculture, manpower and electricity lost in food processing industries and even contributes to  deforestation. Taking all of into consideration, the actual worth of money per year in India from food wastage is estimated at a whopping Rs. 58,000 crore.

According to a survey done by Bhook (an organization working towards reducing hunger) in 2013, around 20 crore Indians sleep hungry on any given night.

Each year, around 22 million metric tonnes of wheat rots in India. The figure is much more than Australia's total annual production.

Food wastage  is a problem that simply cannot be solved through increased use of pesticides, GMOs, animal drugs and intensive confinement factory farms.

The poorest Americans actually have the highest rates of obesity and chronic disease.   They're not suffering the effects of lack of food or starvation. 

They're suffering from obesity-related disorders resulting from cheap processed foods, devoid of much-needed nutrition — the only foods many of these people have access to and can afford.

In USA billions of pounds of fresh foods are in fact available, but the Kosher controlled conventional food bank distribution system does not allow those foods to enter the system. They have their own processed foods ( fridge to microwave ) to market .  

Most  fresh nutritious food is tossed into urban landfills as Americans don’t want to cook anymore. They would rather open a can of unhealthy food and slurp it down In USA you dont see anybody buying a bag of wheat.  Same thing is happening in Indians supermarkets

In addition to destroying soil and denaturing our food, industrial agriculture is also draining aquifers and polluting waterways across the globe, thereby threatening human survival in more ways than one. The frightening reality is we're running out of drinkable water and poisoning what little is left.

India has to reduce fertilizer Nitrate run off into water Dramatic reductions in fertilizer use are also recommended by helping farmers proactively with soil carbon: nitrogen ratio.

Indeed, the long-term solution to many of our water quality and water scarcity issues is to phase out the use of toxic pesticides, chemical fertilizers and soil additives, and to grow crops and raise food animals in such a way that the farm contributes to the overall health and balance of the environment rather than polluting it and creating a dysfunctional ecosystem.

If the water hyacints are not removed from a lake in summer , the water evaporates rapidly by transpiration ..

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes ) is a troublesome aquatic weed and has spread in almost all lakes, ponds and rivers in the entire tropical world due to artificial fertilsers ( phosphates and nitrates run off )  eventually killing a lake. 

The common water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) are vigorous growers known to double their population in two weeks. In large water areas such as  the Kerala Backwaters in India, it has become a serious pest. 

When not controlled, water hyacinth will cover lakes and ponds entirely; this dramatically affects water flow, blocks sunlight from reaching native aquatic plants, and starves the water of oxygen, often killing fish..  

Water hyacinth is a very aggressive invader and can form thick mats.   

India must invest in floating mechanical hyacinth removers .  

District collectors must be sacked if water hyacinths occupy more than 20% of the lake.

Dearest captain
The place where I live used to have only 4 houses.Now the real estate people have built 5 houses and 2 -3more to go.The houses are closely located that I fear for the reduction of well water. Realy fragmentation of land is serious issue.
Moreover today the tap water was having milky colour. Thanks to the chlorine .
White Fumes were coming out.
Do chlorination cleanses the water?

   chlorination kills germs-- fungi , parasites, bacteria and viruses
   
   boiling your tap water or chilling it in the refrigerator will remove the bleach smell from the water.
   
   coconut shell charcoal filter removes chlorine odour --carbon’s naturally porous properties, makes it incredibly efficient at absorbing and trapping any natural organic compounds, tastes, odors and synthetic organic chemicals from water that passes through.

You say Nitrates are one of the key components which pollute water.
Cant there be some solution, which can be put into lakes, which can remove / filter the Nitrates out ?? without affecting the environment further..

Please ignore,if it sounds stupid.

Topsoil is the upper, outermost layer of soil, usually the top 20 cm . In India our HOLY top was 6 feet deep before the white invader came to India.  India was a blessed peninsula .

India needs to go back immediately to our ancient practise of regenerative organic agriculture.  We must sequester huge amounts of excess carbon from the air and bring it back into healthy soil in the form of stable organic matter.  

This is how soil was formed in the first place .

GM agriculture is a key driver in the generation of greenhouse gases like Nitrous Oxide .   Synthetic fertilizers and pesticides of the DESH DROHI GREEN REVOLUTION has killed top soil life essential to building organic matter. 

Top soil has the highest concentration of organic matter and microorganisms and is where most of the  biological soil activity occurs.  

Four elements constitute the composition of soil. Those elements are mineral particles, organic matter, water, and air. Plants generally concentrate their roots in and obtain most of their vital nutrients from this layer.. 

Topsoil is the primary resource for plants to grow and crops to thrive and the main two parameters for this are Carbon and Nitrogen. 

Carbon provides energy and Nitrogen is a tissue builder and plants require them in a range of ratios to enable suitable growth.. 

India taught this to the world - -now we have forgotten all this and white men teach us back our VRIKSHA AYURVEDA patented in their names 

The white invader has made us forget our ancient agriculture practices . We now look at soil as merely something to hold plants up, rather than a miraculous living membrane crucial for human and ecosystem health.   

Soils, when healthy, produce more food, retain more water and sequester significant quantities of carbon from the atmosphere. 

A major environmental concern known as topsoil erosion occurs when the topsoil layer is blown or washed away.  Without topsoil, little plant life is possible.   Topsoil has the greatest organic matter content and microorganisms.  

Organic matter is what is left after plant roots, stems and leaves decompose. Topsoil is made up of carbon and nitrogen, microbes and larger creatures such as worms, beetles and other insects. 

A fertile topsoil also has concentrations of nutrients including potassium, phosphorus and iron. Topsoil varies depending on geographic region and climate, as well as human activity.   

Topsoil provides nutrients to growing plants. This is because this region of soil does the main biological nutrient cycling, providing needed carbon and nitrogen molecules for plants to grow. Topsoil is the home to a diverse community of microbes that do this cycling. 

More importantly, the more diverse a microbial population is, the less soil diseases or plant diseases occur, reducing a farmer's reliance on herbicide or pesticide because the soil community ensures healthy crops. 

Farmers till the topsoil to increase oxygen ingress, nutrient cycling, organic matter and water holding capacity.

Our ancient Indian method of organic farming is now renamed as Regenerative Agriculture by the white man –and he has patented it in his name.

Regenerative agriculture  is an approach to food and farming systems that works with nature's rhythms in ways to feed our growing population, to regenerate topsoil, to enhance biodiversity and to ensure life now and long into the future.  

Specifically, regenerative agriculture regenerates or builds fertile topsoil, primarily through the practices that increase soil organic matter and soil carbon.

Regenerative Agriculture improves water cycles, enhances ecosystem services, increases resilience to climate fluctuation and strengthens the health and vitality of farming communities

A report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization says that, with the current rate of soil degradation, all of the world’s topsoil could be gone in 60 years—and with it farming. 

Regenerative agriculture CREATES  new topsoil, reversing the last 7 decades trend of destroying it.

Regenerative agriculture is defined as “a holistic land management practice that leverages the power of photosynthesis in plants to close the carbon cycle, and build soil health, crop resilience and nutrient density.”

Regenerative agriculture mimics nature.   It’s how nature would farm—healing soil and regenerating land .

Microorganisms are very small forms of life that can sometimes live as single cells, although many also form colonies of cells. A microscope is usually needed to see individual cells of these organisms. 

Many more microorganisms exist in topsoil, where food sources are plentiful, than in subsoil. They are especially abundant in the area immediately next to plant roots (called the rhizosphere), where sloughed-off cells and chemicals released by roots provide ready food sources. 

These organisms are primary decomposers of organic matter, but they do other things, such as provide nitrogen through fixation to help growing plants, detoxify harmful chemicals (toxins), suppress disease organisms, and produce products that might stimulate plant growth. 

Soil microorganisms have had another direct importance for humans—they are the source of most of the antibiotic medicines we use to fight diseases.

Synthetic fertilizers of the desh drohi green revolution  harm the microorganisms in the soil, without which soil degradation sets in, nutrition (both in the soil and the food) goes down and, ultimately, the entire ecosystem begins to suffer.

Farming systems that recycle organic matter and use crop rotations can increase the levels of soil organic carbon. This is achieved through techniques such as longer rotations, catch-crops, cover crops, green manures, legumes, compost, organic mulches, perennials, agroforestry, permaculture, agroecological biodiversity, and livestock on pasture through holistic grazing.

Humus, a key component of soil organic matter, is one of the main reasons for the ability of organic soils to be more stable and to hold more water. This is due to its ability to hold up to 30 times its own weight in water and being a “sticky” polymer, and glues the soil particles together, giving greater resistance to water and wind erosion.

India’s holy top soil did not happen by accident. Rater is is the fruit of thousands of years or wise agriculture. Soil fertility being the result of thousands of years of careful husbandry where all the plant residues and all the cow and other domestic animal manures were returned to the soil.

A wonderful soil microbial life had been built up over these millenniumss.

All these thousands of years of top soil build up was undone in just 70 years of mindless GREEN REVOLUTION gifted to us by CHOOTIYA white Jews.

GREEN REVOLUTION agricultural science holds the belief that to feed a hungry world and meet the demand for an increase in food supply artificial forms of nitrogen, phosphorous, potash and all micronutrients must be added as some form of chemical salt to grow food.

Chemical fertilisers kill off the various soil bacteria, beneficial fungus and earthworms, which support the all important humus, which is the great basis of soil structure. So the soil lost its natural fertility.

Plants now weakened by being fed with artificial fertilisers have developed all kinds of fungus diseases and susceptibility to many insect attacks, and as a consequence a whole regime of chemical plant pesticides and fungicides are now also being used. These chemicals are causing poisonous pollution of the soil, the water and of humans. 

The end result is that our top soil is dead ( devoid of mcirobes ) and groundwater polluted.. Such soil is hard and gets cracked up when there is no moisture. Humus laden soil does not crack up

Soils that have a high humus content, have abundant living biological activity to     convert plant residues, leaf litter, animal dung and vaious biomass into stable humus. Humus gives the soil the ability to absorb and retain moisture. Such soils do not dry out and require significantly less irrigation. 

Humus also supports the all important mycorryhzal fungi, which form a  symbiosis with many plants and are an important factor in the soil food web.     The hyphae from these fungi help bind the soil particles to form good soil  structure. Mycorrhizae are symbiotic relationships that form between fungi and plants. 

The fungi colonize the root system of a host plant, providing increased water and nutrient absorption capabilities while the plant provides the fungus with carbohydrates formed from photosynthesis. 

Mycorrhizas are beneficial fungi growing in association with plant roots, and exist by taking sugars from plants ‘in exchange’ for moisture and nutrients gathered from the soil by the fungal strands.

 The mycorrhizas greatly increase the absorptive area of a plant, acting as extensions to the root system. Mycorrhizal fungus networks reduce the need for water and optimize nutrients. 

The snake groves of Kerala which held the Ayurvedic herb bank was teeming with this fungi. 

The white man called our snakes groves Hindu heathen superstition and destroyed almost all of them. Communists after independence did more damage . Today we have lost 95% of our ancient ayurvedic herbs.

Think of humus as being a big sponge that can hold up to 90% of it’s weight in water.  This water holding capacity of humus is why humus rich soil will remain moist for weeks longer than soil without humus.

Humus has a negative charge which means that many of the nutrients plants require stick to humus, including ammonium (source of nitrogen), calcium, magnesium and phosphorous to name a few. The humus sponge holds onto these nutrients and prevents rain from washing them away. 

When a plant root comes in contact with it, the plant root is able to remove the nutrients from the humus sponge. The process is a bit more complicated than this, but you can think of humus as being a slow release source of fertilizer for your plants.

Perhaps the most important reason for having humus is that it is responsible for aggregation. Aggregation is what makes soil loose and very friable, improving the structure of soil. 

Better soil structure found in humus rich soil makes it easier for plant roots to grow by providing them with better access to nutrients, water and most importantly oxygen.

Humus is left after organic matter decomposes. Each time you add organic matter to the soil, it will increase the amount of humus in the soil. It is a slow process but if organic matter is added each year, the amount of humus will continue to increase. 

This is why India’s fertile top soil was 6 feet deep while the rest of the planet has just 8 inches of top soil.

A plant can acquire 85 percent of the building materials it needs from the air to create liquid carbon. The rest of the nutrients are provided from the soil. 

Soil microbes use this liquid carbon as an energy source to help them convert tied up nutrients into available plant food. In the process, the sugars emitted by the roots act as a glue to create complex soil structure, which includes stable forms of carbon and humus. 

Carbon is needed for soil structuring and water holding. As liquid carbon streams into the aggregates via the roots or fungal linkages, it enables the production of glues and gums that hold soil particles together.

Establishing a good soil structure enables nitrogen-fixing bacteria to function. You will rarely see a nitrogen deficient plant in a healthy natural ecosystem. Ammonia that is fixed from the air is rapidly converted into an amino acid or incorporated into a humic polymer. These organic forms of nitrogen cannot be leached or volatilized.

With rapid carbon sequestering, the growth rate of plants can quickly increase, with as much as a 50% to 70% increase in yields the first year. That is the power of properly functioning soil.

If plants can obtain nitrogen and phosphorus easily, ( force fed by synthetic fertilsers ) they will stop pumping carbon into the soil to support their microbial partners. This interruption of the carbon flow to the soil reduces aggregation and the forming of new topsoil.

Avoid all chemical applications to top soil.   This includes fungicides, pesticides, insecticides and herbicides. It is a no-brainer that something designed to kill things is going to do just that.

These chemical applications can inhibit the soil fungi that are essential to crop nutrition and soil building. When soil fungi are kept from functioning properly, plants can no longer use them to obtain the trace elements they need to fight fungal diseases.

When we spray for weeds it creates bare ground and the weed seed that’s there means the weeds simply come back.

Some weeds have deep roots that help to bring up nutrients. Leaving them can mean that better quality plants will eventually be able to grow in the improved soil and replace the weeds. A little patience may be needed while soils improve.

For dry regions, perennial grasses have incredibly deep root systems and form mycorrhizal associations that help them survive during dry periods. They will soon create their own microclimate to help them overcome a lack of water and thrive, displacing weeds.

A diversity of plants actually improves nutrient acquisition and water retention, and helps to fill in gaps in the soil. Multi-species pasture cropping can help to displace unwanted weed

Dirt is transformed into soil by adding large amounts of organic carbon to support biological activity. The recycling of organic matter by soil organisms concentrates sulfur, boron, N, P and K within the top soil ‘turning over’ nutrients for plant use.

The capacity of microbes to rapidly turn over organic matter replenishes the nutrient supply available for plants. However, microbes can only turn over humus very slowly (chemically protected organic carbon). 

Humus is the byproduct of microbial activity, essential for increasing the storage of both water and nutrients in soil for plant growth -measured as cation exchange capacity. Microbial activity is most significantly affected by the availability of soil organic carbon and soil moisture.. 

The addition of ‘burning’ fertilizers such as Big N or Muriate of Potash can kill microbes on contact

Rotating intensive cropping with several years of pasture is a time-honored way of replenishing the soil. Leaving the soil covered (greater than 70%) with plant residues favors the activity of soil animals, producing more food for microbes. 

However where stock are not feasible, green manures, minimal tillage and stubble mulching all feed the soil. Rotating crops from different plant families diversifies the residue input, diversifying the microbial spectrum. 

Matching the nutrient needs of crops with rock fertilizers and/or composts improves the health and harvest of the crop, and the residues also feed the soil. Feeding the soil increases the ability of microbes to ‘turn-over’ organic matter, increasing the plant-available nutrient supply and the soil humus reserves.

The “structure” of a food web is the composition and relative numbers of organisms in each group within the soil. The living component of soil, the food web, is complex and has different compositions in different ecosystems. In a healthy soil, there are a large number of bacteria and bacterial feeding organisms. 

Where the soil has received heavy treatments of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, soil fungicides or fumigants that kill these organisms, the beneficial soil organisms may die (impeding the performance of their activities), or the balance between the pathogens and beneficial organisms may be upset, allowing those called opportunists (disease-causing organisms) to become problems.

These fungi generally use complex substrates, such as the cellulose and lignin, in wood. They are essential for decomposing the carbon ring structures in some pollutants. Like bacteria, fungi are important for immobilizing or retaining nutrients in the soil.

Mutualists - mycorrhizal fungi - colonize plant roots through a symbiotic relationship. The definition of symbiosis is a close, prolonged association between two or more different organisms of different species that may benefit each member. Mycorrhizae increase the surface area associated with the plant root, which allows the plant to reach nutrients and water that otherwise might not be available. 

Mycorrhizae essentially extend plant reach to water and nutrients, allowing plants to utilize more of the resources available in the soil. Mycorrhizae source their carbohydrates (energy) from the plant root they are living in/on and they usually help the plants by transferring phosphorus (P) from the soil into the root.

Regenerative agriculture is defined as "a holistic land management practice that leverages the power of photosynthesis in plants to close the carbon cycle, and build soil health, crop resilience and nutrient density."

Regenerative practices focus primarily on building soils. These include use of cover crops, diverse crop rotations, compost and manure to increase soil fertility; building biological ecosystem diversity and soil biology; and well-managed animal grazing practices to improve plant growth, soil fertility, insect and plant diversity and soil carbon sequestration.

Artificial fertilizers are man-made chemical compounds that mimic the soil's natural minerals and elements to maximize plant growth.   

ARTIFICIAL FERTILIZERS ARE THE UNHEALTHY FAST FOOD EQUIVALENT.

They usually contain different ratios of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and other elements.

Artificial fertilizers are convenient, easy to use and readily available. Organic fertilizers include biofertilizers, green manure, organic manure and compost.

While natural fertilizers take longer to build soil vitality, they are safer and cause no pollution.

Throughout history, agriculture has relied on natural fertilizers to increase the nutrient levels of soil.

Artificial fertilizers kill beneficial microorganisms in the soil that convert plant and animal remains into nutrient-rich organic matter. They also leach nitrogen and phosphate into groundwater and pollute streams, rivers, lakes and other water bodies to disrupt aquatic ecosystems. 

Plants grown from synthetic fertilizers contain toxic nitrates that react with hemoglobin to damage the vascular and respiratory systems and cause suffocation and even death in extreme cases. Over time, artificial fertilizers destroy the soil’s natural makeup. Too much fertilizer produces plants deficient in iron, zinc, carotene, vitamin C, copper and protein.

Three main macronutrients:

Nitrogen (N): leaf growth;

Three secondary macronutrients: calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S);

Plants are made up of four main elements: hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen.  Although nitrogen makes up most of the atmosphere, it is in a form that is unavailable to plants.

The main micronutrients are molybdenum, zinc, and copper. These elements are provided as water-soluble salts.

Potash is a mixture of potassium minerals used to make potassium (chemical symbol: K) fertilizers. Potash is soluble in water.  Potash fertilizers are usually potassium chloride, potassium sulfate, potassium carbonate, or potassium nitrate.

The main "organic fertilizers" are peat, animal wastes, plant wastes from agriculture, and treated sewage sludge (biosolids).  In terms of volume, peat is the most widely used organic fertilizer.  This immature form of coal confers no nutritional value to the plants, but improves the soil by aeration and absorbing water.

Fertilizers are applied to crops both as solids and as liquid. About 90% of fertilizers are applied as solids. Solid fertilizer is typically granulated or powdered. Often solids are available as prills, a solid globule.

Controlled release fertilizers are traditional fertilizers encapsulated in a shell that degrades at a specified rate. Sulfur is a typical encapsulation material.

Excess nutrients are detrimental.   Fertilizer burn can occur when too much fertilizer is applied, resulting in drying out of the leaves and damage or even death of the plant.

Agricultural run-off is a major contributor to the eutrophication of fresh water bodies.  In the US, about 65 % of all the lakes are eutrophic.

The nitrogen-rich compounds found in fertilizer runoff are the primary cause of serious oxygen depletion in many parts of oceans, especially in coastal zones, lakes and rivers. The resulting lack of dissolved oxygen greatly reduces the ability of these areas to sustain oceanic fauna.  

If eutrophication can be reversed, it may take decades before the accumulated nitrates in groundwater can be broken down by natural processes.

Parthenium hysterophorus is a serious invasive weed of pasture systems, reducing pasture productivity by more than 90% .

Waste becomes pollution rather than a valuable part of the ecological cycle, and a whole host of land maintenance services that animals serve for free have to be replaced with chemical and mechanical means.

A cover crop is a crop planted primarily to manage soil erosion, soil fertility, soil quality, water, weeds, pests, diseases.

Although cover crops can perform multiple functions in an agroecosystem simultaneously, they are often grown for the sole purpose of preventing soil erosion.  Soil erosion is a process that can irreparably reduce the productive capacity of an agroecosystem.  

Dense cover crop stands physically slow down the velocity of rainfall before it contacts the soil surface, preventing soil splashing and erosive surface runoff

One of the primary uses of cover crops is to increase soil fertility. These types of cover crops are referred to as "green manure." They are used to manage a range of soil macronutrients and micronutrients.

Cover crops can also improve soil quality by increasing soil organic matter levels through the input of cover crop biomass over time. Increased soil organic matter enhances soil structure, as well as the water and nutrient holding and buffering capacity of soil .

By reducing soil erosion, cover crops often also reduce both the rate and quantity of water that drains off the field, which would normally pose environmental risks to waterways and ecosystems downstream.  

Cover crop biomass acts as a physical barrier between rainfall and the soil surface, allowing raindrops to steadily trickle down through the soil profile. Also, as stated above, cover crop root growth results in the formation of soil pores, which in addition to enhancing soil macrofauna habitat provides pathways for water to filter through the soil profile rather than draining off the field as surface flow. 

With increased water infiltration, the potential for soil water storage and the recharging of aquifers can be improved .

While cover crops can help to conserve water, in temperate regions (particularly in years with below average precipitation) they can draw down soil water supply in the spring, particularly if climatic growing conditions are good. In these cases, just before crop planting, farmers often face a tradeoff between the benefits of increased cover crop growth and the drawbacks of reduced soil moisture for cash crop production that season. C/N ratio is balanced with this application.

Some cover crops suppress weeds both during growth and after death . During growth these cover crops compete vigorously with weeds for available space, light, and nutrients, and after death they smother the next flush of weeds by forming a mulch layer on the soil surface.

Some cover crops are used as so-called "trap crops", to attract pests away from the crop of value and toward what the pest sees as a more favorable habitat.  In some organic systems, farmers drive over the trap crop with a large vacuum-based implement to physically pull the pests off the plants and out of the field .

Other cover crops are used to attract natural predators of pests by providing elements of their habitat. This is a form of biological control known as habitat augmentation, but achieved with the use of cover crops

Since the cover crop is typically not a crop of value, its management is usually less intensive, providing a window of “soft” human influence on the farm. This relatively “hands-off” management, combined with the increased on-farm heterogeneity created by the establishment of cover crops, increases the likelihood that a more complex trophic structure will develop to support a higher level of wildlife diversity

Crop rotation is the practice of growing a series of dissimilar or different types of crops in the same area in sequenced seasons. It is done so that the soil of farms is not used for only one set of nutrients. It helps in reducing soil erosion and increases soil fertility and crop yield.

Growing the same crop in the same place for many years in a row disproportionately depletes the soil of certain nutrients. With rotation, a crop that leaches the soil of one kind of nutrient is followed during the next growing season by a dissimilar crop that returns that nutrient to the soil or draws a different ratio of nutrients. 

In addition, crop rotation mitigates the buildup of pathogens and pests that often occurs when one species is continuously cropped, and can also improve soil structure and fertility by increasing biomass from varied root structures.

In the Green Revolution of the mid-20th century the traditional practice of crop rotation gave way in the western world to the practice of CHEMICAL KOSHER AGRICULTURE (using artificial fertilizers, pesticides and sterile  GM seeds )

A preliminary assessment of crop interrelationships can be found in how each crop: (1) contributes to soil organic matter (SOM) content, (2) provides for pest management, (3) manages deficient or excess nutrients, and (4) how it contributes to or controls for soil erosion.

Many crops which are critical for the market, like vegetables, are row crops (that is, grown in tight rows). While often the most profitable for farmers, these crops are more taxing on the soil. Row crops typically have low biomass and shallow roots: this means the plant contributes low residue to the surrounding soil and has limited effects on structure

While these crops may be profitable for the farm, they are nutrient depleting. Crop rotation practices exist to strike a balance between short-term profitability and long-term productivity.

A great advantage of crop rotation comes from the interrelationship of nitrogen fixing-crops with nitrogen demanding crops

A crop rotation must consider in what condition one crop will leave the soil for the succeeding crop and how one crop can be seeded with another crop. For example, a nitrogen-fixing crop, like a legume, should always proceed a nitrogen depleting one; similarly, a low residue crop (i.e. a crop with low biomass) should be offset with a high biomass cover crop.

Crop rotation systems may be enriched by the influences of other practices such as the addition of livestock and manure, intercropping or multiple cropping, and organic management without using  pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.

Farmers are required to implement a crop rotation that maintains or builds soil organic matter, works to control pests, manages and conserves nutrients, and protects against erosion. Producers of perennial crops that aren’t rotated may utilize other practices, such as cover crops, to maintain soil health.

In addition to lowering the need for inputs by controlling for pests and weeds and increasing available nutrients, crop rotation helps organic growers increase the amount of biodiversity on their farms.  Increasing the biodiversity of crops has beneficial effects on the surrounding ecosystem and can host a greater diversity of fauna, insects, and beneficial microorganism in the soil.

The use of different species in rotation allows for increased soil organic matter (SOM), greater soil structure, and improvement of the chemical and biological soil environment for crops. With more SOM, water infiltration and retention improves, providing increased drought tolerance and decreased erosion.

Soil organic matter is a mix of decaying material from biomass with active microorganisms. Crop rotation, by nature, increases exposure to biomass from sod, green manure, and a various other plant debris. The reduced need for intensive tillage under crop rotation allows biomass aggregation to lead to greater nutrient retention and utilization, decreasing the need for added nutrients.

Soil microorganisms decrease pathogen and pest activity through competition. Plants produce root exudates and other chemicals which manipulate their soil environment as well as their weed environment. Thus rotation allows increased yields from nutrient availability but also alleviation of allelopathy and competitive weed environments.

Crop rotations greatly increase soil organic carbon (SOC) content, the main constituent of soil organic matter.  Carbon, along with hydrogen and oxygen, is a macronutrient for plants. Highly diverse rotations spanning long periods of time have shown to be even more effective in increasing SOC.

Rotating crops adds nutrients to the soil. Legumes, plants of the family Fabaceae, for instance, have nodules on their roots which contain nitrogen-fixing bacteria called rhizobia. During a process called nodulation, the rhizobia bacteria use nutrients and water provided by the plant to convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia, which is then converted into an organic compound that the plant can use as its nitrogen source.   

It therefore makes good sense agriculturally to alternate them with cereals (family Poaceae) and other plants that require nitrates. How much nitrogen made available to the plants depends on factors such as the kind of legume, the effectiveness of rhizobia bacteria, soil conditions, and the availability of elements necessary for plant food

Crop rotation is also used to control pests and diseases that can become established in the soil over time. The changing of crops in a sequence decreases the population level of pests by (1) interrupting pest life cycles and (2) interrupting pest habitat. Plants within the same taxonomic family tend to have similar pests and pathogens.

 By regularly changing crops and keeping the soil occupied by cover crops instead of lying fallow, pest cycles can be broken or limited, especially cycles that benefit from overwintering in residue.

This principle is of particular use in organic farming, where pest control must be achieved without synthetic pesticides

Integrating certain crops, especially cover crops, into crop rotations is of particular value to weed management. These crops crowd out weed through competition.

In addition, the sod and compost from cover crops and green manure slows the growth of what weeds are still able to make it through the soil, giving the crops further competitive advantage. By removing slowing the growth and proliferation of weeds while cover crops are cultivated, farmers greatly reduce the presence of weeds for future crops, including shallow rooted and row crops, which are less resistant to weeds. 

Cover crops are, therefore, considered conservation crops because they protect otherwise fallow land from becoming overrun with weeds.

Increasing the biodiversity of crops has beneficial effects on the surrounding ecosystem and can host a greater diversity of fauna, insects, and beneficial microorganisms in the soil. 

Increased nutrient availability from crop rotation under organic systems compared to conventional practices as organic practices are less likely to inhibit of beneficial microbes in soil organic matter, such as arbuscular mycorrhizae, which increase nutrient uptake in plants.   Increasing biodiversity also increases the resilience of agro-ecological systems.

Different crops in the rotation can reduce the risks of adverse weather for the individual farmer.

 The purpose of crop rotation is to help maintain the balance of nutrients, organic matter, and microorganisms necessary for healthy soil. 

Of these three, the invisible world of soil-dwelling micro-creatures is the one that most benefits from crop rotations.

 Most pests and diseases can damage plants of the same botanical family, but cannot hurt unrelated crops

In addition to interrupting disease cycles, rotating crops prevents the depletion of nutrients. For example, tomatoes need plenty of calcium the same way beans and beets crave manganese. But the exact benefits of effective rotations vary with crop sequence. 

Broad-leafed greens are great for suppressing weeds, and the deep roots of sweet corn do a good job of penetrating compacted subsoil. Nitrogen-fixing legumes often take no more nitrogen from the soil than they replace, and their presence stimulates the growth of beneficial soil microorganisms.

Planting marigold or calendula between vegetables may reduce unwanted nematodes in the soil.

Some herbs planted among the vegetables or around the vegetable patch appear to keep pests at bay. For example, basil planted with tomatoes and lettuce may deter insects, and oregano planted with broccoli may repel cabbage flies.

We must rotate annual crops for the same reasons. To continually plant the same thing in the same space will undoubtedly create an imbalance in the soil nutrients. This system would then require that we supplement the soil, replenishing whatever nutrients are being depleted. 

Similarly, by putting the same crop in the same spot, we also signal it as a prime spot for diseases and pests to wait around for next season’s feast. Rather, if we keep things rotating, the nutrients get naturally replenished, and the problem elements have a tougher time finding what they want.

Legumes and pulses, different types of beans and peas, are great because they take nitrogen from the air and “fix” it into the soil, naturally increasing fertility. They are great crops to grow before planting hungry plants, such as those from the brassica family: kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, mustard, etc. 

Fruiting plants, such tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, cucumbers, melons, and squashes, are not quite as demanding as the leafy crops, so they can follow the brassicas. However, root vegetables — the garlics, the onions, the carrots, the beets of the world—tend to be skilled at rooting out their own nutritional needs, so they can follow these two hungry plants and still do okay. Then, it’s back to legumes.

The goals of crop rotation are to help manage organic soil fertility and also to help avoid or reduce problems with soil-borne diseases and some soil-dwelling insects.

Different crops have different nutrient requirements and affect soil balance differently. Some, like corn and tomatoes, are heavy feeders that quickly deplete soil nitrogen and phosphorus. 

Thus, if you plant corn in the same spot year after year, that plot of soil will run low on nitrogen and phosphorus more quickly than other parts of your garden will. 

By changing the location of corn each year, you'll be able to renew the plot where it grew the preceding year, so your soil won't get out of balance.

There are other crops that also use up nitrogen rapidly. They tend to be the leafy and fruiting crops, such as lettuce, cabbage, and tomatoes. In contrast, root vegetables and herbs are light feeders. Peas, beans, and other legumes add nitrogen to the soil but need lots of phosphorus. 

For decades, we’ve produced the bulk of our food through industrial agriculture—a system dominated by large farms growing the same crops year after year, using enormous amounts of chemical pesticides and fertilizers that damage soils, water, air, and climate. This system is not built to last, because it squanders and degrades the resources that it depends on.

Moving toward a farming system that is more sustainable—environmentally, economically, and socially. This system has room for farms of all sizes, producing a diverse range of foods, fibers, and fuels adapted to local conditions and regional markets. It uses state-of-the-art, science-based practices that maximize productivity and profit while minimizing environmental damage.

Planting cover crops like clover or hairy vetch, are planted during off-season times when soils might otherwise be left bare. These crops protect and build soil health by preventing erosion, replenishing soil nutrients, and keeping weeds in check, reducing the need for herbicides.  

Some proponents of industrial KOSHER agriculture claim that its impacts are the price we must pay to “feed the world.”

You advised to avoid ghee of humpless cow. I found "Patanjali desi ghee" in a store. No A2 butter availabe yet. The picture has a humpless cow. Do they actually use humpless cows or am I better off making my own ghee? Because I use it for two toddlers'food- they are 10mo old.
