At the bottom of the small intestine there is a NON-RETURN valve, the ileocecal valve.

In advanced cases of SIBO, the bacteria use up enough food, that there are insufficient calories for the body, which leads to severe weight loss.
There is a striking similarity between the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and SIBO.
Again , the main purpose of the small intestine is to digest and absorb food into the body.

Fasting as per Ayurveda sweeps bacteria out of the small intestine and thereby limits the numbers of bacteria in the small intestine.
Small intestine must never ever have too much bacteria –people who do too must probiotics must note this –and note it good.
Anything that interferes with the progression of normal muscular activity through the small intestine can result in SIBO. Any condition that interferes with muscular activity in the small intestine allows bacteria to stay longer and multiply in the small intestine.
Neurologic and muscular diseases can alter the normal activity of the intestinal muscles. Diabetes mellitus damages the nerves that control the intestinal muscles.
Scleroderma damages the intestinal muscles directly. In both cases, abnormal muscular activity in the small intestine allows SIBO to develop.
In scleroderma, the muscles of the small intestines become weakened and ultimately get replaced by scar tissue.
Because of loss of normal muscle contraction, small intestinal contents may puddle, permitting bacteria to grow in a portion of the intestine that is normally sterile.
Weakening of the muscles of the large intestine usually produces the problem of constipation.
The relationship between normal small intestinal bacteria and their human host is symbiotic, which means that each benefits from the other. The bacteria benefit from the warm, moist environment of the small intestine that is ideal for growth as well as a constant flow of food passing down the gastrointestinal tract that provides a ready source for their nutrition.
The human host benefits in several ways. For example, the normal bacteria stimulate the growth of the intestinal lining and the immune system of the small intestine. They prevent the growth of disease-causing bacteria within the small intestine.
They produce vitamin K, which is absorbed and used by the host.. Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that is most well known for the important role it plays in blood clotting. Because of the different nature of dysbiosis in gut conditions – IBS is a functional condition while Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are organic inflammatory diseases, yet both show gut dysbiosis.
Dysbiosis can play an important role in many mood and psychiatric problems.

Clinical significance-- If abdominal pain or signs of peritonitis are localised in the LLQ, colitis, diverticulitis, ureteral colic or pain due to ovarian cysts or pelvic inflammatory disease may be suspected. Examples of tumors in the left lower quadrant include colon cancer and ovarian tumor.
The LUQ may be painful or tender in the case of intestinal malrotation. The RUQ may be painful or tender in hepatitis, cholecystitis, and peptic ulcer. The RLQ may be painful and/or tender in such conditions as appendicitis.
Ileocecal valve pain has always been mistaken by inexperienced doctors as ‘grumbling appendix’.
The ileocecal valve can show such acute painful stress that it can sometimes be confused with an inflamed appendix.
The valve is controlled by three sources: the digestion process, the nervous system, and the hormone system.
A healthy Ileocecal valve would stay closed to hold the food in the small intestines until the digestion and absorption of nutrients is completed and it gets the green signal to open up momentarily. It will then open up and let the digested food remains enter into the large intestines.
If this green signal system OPEN SESAME does not work –the valve could stay open for more time .
As a result, the food to be digested would pass through the small intestines too fast, too few nutrients would be absorbed, and the mostly undigested food would enter the colon, where bacterial processes could cause a lot of gas; and you might experience diarrhea.
Second, the ileocecal valve could be shut most of the time. Food would the stay for too long in the small intestines, and could start to rot and cause gas in the small intestines; toxins from the rotting food could be absorbed into you system and force the liver to work overtime; you could feel bloated, and experience constipation.

The protective mucus layer ( KAPHA ) provides both a physical and a chemical barrier to microbes.
The epithelial layer acts as a structural barrier via tight junctions between cells. Epithelial cells also emit signals that regulate innate and adaptive immunity.
Beneath the epithelium lies a connective tissue layer known as the lamina propria, which contains various immune cells such as T lymphocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and antibody-secreting IgA plasma cells.

Mucous ( KAPHA ) destroys bacteria and viruses, traps particles such as dirt, prevents water loss, humidifies passageways, lubricates the movement of materials, and protects surfaces from damage.
The stomach lining is covered by a protective layer of mucus. Glands in the stomach produce mucus, hydrochloric acid and an inactive enzyme called pepsinogen. In the stomach cavity, the hydrochloric acid changes the pepsinogen into an active digestive enzyme called pepsin. This enzyme digests proteins. The mucus layer acts as a barrier which prevents the stomach lining from being attacked by pepsin and acid.
If the mucus layer in the stomach is thinned or removed, which may happen during an infection by a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori, pepsin and acid may be able to attack the stomach lining. The infection can cause inflammation (gastritis) and sores called ulcers. Glands in the lining of the small intestine and the large intestine also produce mucus.

Migrating motor complexes (or migrating myoelectric complex or migratory motor complex or migratory myoelectric complex or MMC) are waves of electrical activity that sweep through the intestines in a regular cycle during fasting.
These motor complexes trigger peristaltic waves, which facilitate transportation of indigestible substances such as bone, fiber, and foreign bodies from the stomach, through the SMALL intestine, past the ileocecal sphincter non-return valve , and into the LARGE intestine
The MMC occurs every 90–120 minutes during the interdigestive phase (i.e., between meals) and is responsible for the rumbling experienced when hungry. It also serves to transport bacteria from the small intestine to the large intestine and to inhibit the migration of colonic bacteria into the terminal ileum.
The MMC is partially regulated by motilin, which is initiated in the stomach as a response to vagal stimulation, and does not directly depend on extrinsic nerves.
The result of poor MMC function is constipation and/or SIBO, or small intestinal bacteria overgrowth. This can cause lots of digestion problems (bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, food allergies).
Part of what stimulates the MMC is fasting, so take breaks between meals—don’t keep eating like a CUNT
A hormone produced by the stomach called motilin helps regulate the MMC. Motilin release is regulated by the vagus nerve, that comes from the brain and goes to all of the organs of the chest and abdomen.
Pranayama and surya namaskar stimulates the vagus nerve.
A high cholesterol diet inhibits the MMC, so keep your cholesterol intake low to moderate.

The migrating motor complex cleans up your small intestine when you’re done eating by sweeping undigested food particles and bacteria from the stomach and small intestine in to the large intestine
The basics of turning on the migrating motor complex are pretty simple. Approximately 3 hours after your last meal, it begins. Your stomach begins moving and you get a nice squirt of stomach acid.
This mixes with bacteria left over in the stomach as well as incompletely digested food particles. The acid helps kill any bacteria that may still be alive and the contractions help mobilize bacteria and the food particles for removal.

Once bile ( PITTA ) makes it to the ileum, bile acids get reabsorbed, sent to the liver, and re-stored in the gall bladder. The process of bile absorption also brings another welcomed effect: the release of antimicrobial peptides to kill most of the live bacteria remaining.
The bacteria get pushed in to the LARGE intestine and you’re ready for the next round of the migrating motor complex, or your next meal. This entire process takes approximately 90 minutes. This mucus (KAPHA ) layer plays a big role in keeping your gut healthy.
The mucus layer prevents a large immune reaction every time you eat. By keeping bacteria away and requiring them to travel to enterocytes, your mucus layer gives your immune system time to take out bacteria before they can become a problem.
Along with the integrity of the mucus layer, constant motion in the direction of the colon prevents the mucus layer from accumulating too much bacteria just like water from a moving creek has less bacteria than a standing pond. Motion is good, stagnation is bad.

The LARGE intestine ( COLON ) serves two important functions: (a) extraction of water and electrolytes from the luminal contents in the ascending and transverse colon and (b) storage of feces and control of defecation in the descending colon.
This specialization of function has been attributed to regional differences in colonic motility patterns. Electrical slow-wave frequency and rhythmic phasic contractions are slower in the proximal colon (cecum and ascending colon), thus facilitating extraction of water from the fecal mass by diffusion and active transport.
Retrograde giant contractions and anti-peristalsis further facilitate mixing of contents in the proximal colon. In contrast, motility of the distal colon (transverse and descending colon) is characterized primarily by migrating spike bursts and powerful giant migrating contractions that propagate the fecal mass toward the rectum
During fasting, the gallbladder is relaxed and stores bile ( PITTA ) . When feeding resumes, hormonal (cholecystokinin) and neural (acetylcholine) mechanisms stimulate simultaneous gallbladder contraction and sphincter of Oddi relaxation, thereby facilitating emptying of bile into the small intestine.
Diarrhea may be an under-appreciated symptom of bile acid malabsorption. Bile acid is produced by the liver to help absorb lipids in the small intestine. Diarrhea can, therefore, be a signal from your body that a greater problem exists.

As the bacteria over grow they damage the lining of the SMALL intestinal tract. Bacteria produce and enzyme called glycosidase that destroy brush border enzymes in our intestinal lining. This reduction in our digestive enzymes reduces our ability to digest and absorb our food, providing more food for the bacteria allowing them to become even more overgrown.

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped sac located below the liver (on the right side of the abdomen) which contains approximately a half cup of yellowish-greenish fluid called gallbladder bile.
The bile originates in the liver before moving into the gallbladder, where the bile becomes 10 times more concentrated. The healthy, functioning gallbladder then acts as a storage reservoir for concentrated bile before it moves into the duodenum (small intestine).
The main function of bile is to assist the body in digesting fats by dividing the fats into thin droplets. It helps pancreatic enzymes split the fats into small particles that can pass through the walls of the intestines.
When the semi-digested food exits the stomach and moves into the small intestine the gallbladder contracts causing the concentrated bile to move through the bile ducts into the small intestine.

Once the gallbladder is removed liquid liver bile flows out constantly from the common bile duct straight into the small intestine instead of being stored in the gallbladder. This low quality liquid liver bile that constantly flows into the duodenum cannot properly digest the fats, causing fat intolerance and diarrhea in some people.
Bile is instrumental in removing dangerous toxins such as bile pigments, bile acids, cholesterol and heavy metals. The antimicrobial property of concentrated gallbladder bile assists in keeping the small intestine from dangerous invaders such as bad bacteria, parasites, and yeasts.
Consequently, absence of the gallbladder leads to Candida-yeast and Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) which can create gas and indigestion.
Healthy alkaline bile neutralizes the semi-digested acidic food from the stomach therefore creating the proper alkaline milieu in the small intestine for pancreatic enzymes to work. Pancreatic enzymes require an alkaline condition in the small intestine digest consumed food.
When the gallbladder bile is not alkaline, indigested foods in the small intestine are fermented causing gas, bloating, abdominal cramps, and HAJAAAR visits to the bathroom.
When there is no gallbladder, the increasing pressure inside the pancreatic duct can cause activation of the pancreatic enzymes inside the pancreas and as a consequence, inflammation of the pancreas can develop.
The liver, gallbladder, pancreas, duodenum, bile ducts, and muscles valves work together due to the perfect regulation of the body. Cutting the nerve branches surrounding the gallbladder can disrupt the proper work of the Sphincter of Oddi - the valve between the bile and pancreatic ducts and the SMALL intestine
Almost 20% of patients after gallbladder surgery suffer from Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction. Spasm of this strategic valve leads to backup of the bile and pancreatic juices with resultant pain, nausea, and possible development of pancreatitis.
Concentrated gallbladder bile is necessary for intestinal motility, digestion and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K. The lack of gallbladder bile creates less peristaltic movement which makes people prone to constipation.
The main reasons for gallbladder surgery are inflammation and/or gallbladder stones. Removal of the gallbladder does not stop the production of stones and inflammation of the bile ducts. Therefore, inflammation and collection of the stones, both in the liver and in the bile ducts, can be often observed in people without a gallbladder.
Although loss of these functions of the gallbladder is not life threatening, removal of the gallbladder can cause many unpleasant symptoms. For some people life after gallbladder removal is a miserable existence. This condition is called post-cholecystectomy syndrome.
The term post-cholecystectomy syndrome (PCS) describes the presence of symptoms after cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal surgery).
In a healthy, functioning body the gallbladder, pancreas, bile and pancreatic juices are naturally alkaline. Whole body acidity is one of the main causes of liver, gallbladder and pancreas malfunction.
Acidity causes biochemical changes in the bile that makes it corrosively irritating to the bile ducts, sphincter of Oddi and the small intestine.
Aggressive acidic liver bile irritates surrounding tissues, causes jerky contractions and refluxes. This aggressive mix of the acidic bile and pancreatic juices regurgitates into the stomach and esophagus and/or causes spasms of the sphincter of Oddi.
This can be the cause of the heartburn, nausea and upper abdominal pain often experienced after gallbladder surgery.
An alkaline diet involves eating mostly alkaline-based foods and avoiding acid-forming foods such as sugars, red meat, sodas, dairy products, white flour, white rice, alcohol, etc.
Typically, people without a gallbladder have two problems: one is Candida-yeast overgrowth, another is food sensitivity. An elimination diet and anti-Candida diet can be very beneficial for these conditions.
