One of the most rapidly
growing uses of OFCs ( offshore companies ) is the use of special purpose
vehicles (SPV) to engage in financial activities in a more favorable tax
environment.
An onshore corporation establishes an IBC in an offshore center to
engage in a specific activity. The issuance of asset-backed securities is the
most frequently cited activity of SPVs.
The onshore corporation may assign a
set of assets to the offshore SPV (e.g., a portfolio of mortgages, loans credit
card receivables). The SPV then offers a variety of securities to investors
based on the underlying assets.
The SPV, and hence the onshore parent, benefit
from the favorable tax treatment in the OFC. Financial institutions also make
use of SPVs to take advantage of less restrictive regulations on their
activities.
Banks, in particular, use them to raise Tier I capital in the lower
tax environments of OFCs. SPVs are also set up by non-bank financial
institutions to take advantage of more liberal netting rules than faced in home
countries, reducing their capital requirements.
A special-purpose
entity (SPE; or, in Europe and India, special-purpose vehicle/SPV, or, in some
cases in each EU jurisdiction – FVC, financial vehicle corporation) is a legal
entity (usually a limited company of some type or, sometimes, a limited
partnership) created to fulfill narrow, specific or temporary objectives.
SPEs
are typically used by companies to isolate the firm from financial risk. They
are also commonly used to hide debt (inflating profits), hide ownership, and
obscure relationships between different entities which are in fact related to
each other.
Normally a company will
transfer assets to the SPE for management or use the SPE to finance a large
project thereby achieving a narrow set of goals without putting the entire firm
at risk.
SPEs are also commonly used in complex financings to separate
different layers of equity infusion. Commonly created and registered in tax
havens, SPEs allow tax avoidance strategies unavailable in the home district.
Round-tripping is one such strategy. In addition, they are commonly used to own
a single asset and associated permits and contract rights (such as an apartment
building or a power plant), to allow for easier transfer of that asset.
They
are an integral part of public private partnerships common throughout Europe
which rely on a project finance type structure.
A special-purpose
entity may be owned by one or more other entities and certain jurisdictions may
require ownership by certain parties in specific percentages. Often it is
important that the SPE is not owned by the entity on whose behalf the SPE is
being set up (the sponsor).
For example, in the context of a loan
securitization, if the SPE securitisation vehicle were owned or controlled by
the bank whose loans were to be secured, the SPE would be consolidated with the
rest of the bank's group for regulatory, accounting, and bankruptcy purposes,
which would defeat the point of the securitisation.
Therefore, many SPEs are set
up as 'orphan' companies with their shares settled on charitable trust and with
professional directors provided by an administration company to ensure that
there is no connection with the sponsor.
Some of the reasons for
creating special-purpose entities are as follows--:
SPEs are commonly used
to securitize loans (or other receivables). For example, a bank may wish to
issue a mortgage-backed security whose payments come from a pool of loans.
However, to ensure that the holders of the mortgage-backed securities have the
first priority right to receive payments on the loans, these loans need to be
legally separated from the other obligations of the bank. This is done by
creating an SPE, and then transferring the loans from the bank to the SPE.
Corporates may use SPEs
to legally isolate a high risk project/asset from the parent company and to
allow other investors to take a share of the risk.
Multi-tiered SPEs allow
multiple tiers of investment and debt.
Many permits required to operate certain
assets (such as power plants) are either non-transferable or difficult to
transfer. By having an SPE own the asset and all the permits, the SPE can be
sold as a self-contained package, rather than attempting to assign over
numerous permits.
SPEs are often used in
financial engineering schemes which have, as their main goal, the avoidance of
tax or the manipulation of financial statements. The Enron case is possibly the
most famous example of a company using SPEs to achieve the latter goal.
A special-purpose
entity can sometimes be set up within an orphan structure to circumvent
regulatory restrictions, such as regulations relating to nationality of
ownership of specific assets.
Some countries have different tax rates for
capital gains and gains from property sales. For tax reasons, letting each
property be owned by a separate company can be a good thing. These companies
can then be sold and bought instead of the actual properties, effectively
converting property sale gains into capital gains for tax purposes.
Special-purpose
entities were one of the main tools used by executives at Enron, in order to
hide losses and fabricate earnings, resulting in the Enron scandal of 2001.
They were also used to hide losses and overstate earnings by executives at
Towers Financial, which declared bankruptcy in 1994. Several executives of the
company were found guilty of securities fraud, served prison sentences, and
paid fines.
A special purpose
vehicle/entity (SPV/SPE) is a subsidiary company with an asset/liability
structure and legal status that makes its obligations secure even if the parent
company goes bankrupt.
An SPV/SPE is also a subsidiary corporation designed to
serve as a counterparty for swaps and other credit sensitive derivative
instruments. Although the SPVs/SPEs are used to isolate financial risk, due to
accounting loopholes, these vehicles
may become a financially devastating way
for CFOs to hide debt, as with the Enron bankruptcy.
Enron transferred much
of its quickly rising stock to an SPV/SPE and received cash or a note in
return. The SPV/SPE used the stock for hedging assets shown on the company’s
balance sheet. Enron guaranteed the SPVs/SPE's value as a means of reducing
risk.
When stock prices began dropping, along with the values of the SPVs/SPEs,
the guarantees were forced into play. Enron was unable to pay the large amounts
of money it owed creditors and investors, leading to a massive financial
collapse.
Few investors understood the
gravity of the situation and what ended up being a disastrous ending for Enron.
In order to satisfy
Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s credit rating agencies, Enron had to make
sure the company’s leverage ratios were within acceptable ranges. Enron, like
many other companies, used “special purpose entities” (SPEs) to access capital
or hedge risk.
By using SPEs such as limited partnerships with outside parties,
a company is permitted to increase leverage and ROA without having to report
debt on its balance sheet. The company contributes hard assets and related debt
to an SPE in exchange for an interest.
The SPE then borrows large sums of money
from a financial institution to purchase assets or conduct other business
without the debt or assets showing up on the company’s financial statements.
The company can also sell leveraged assets to the SPE and book a profit.
To
avoid classification of the SPE as a subsidiary (thereby forcing the entity to
include the SPE’s financial position and results of operations in its financial
statements), FASB guidelines require that only 3% of the SPE be owned by an
outside investor.
Enron took the use of SPEs to new heights of complexity and
sophistication, capitalizing them with not only a variety of hard assets and
liabilities, but also extremely complex derivative financial instruments, its
own restricted stock, rights to acquire its stock and related liabilities.
As
its financial dealings became more complicated, the company apparently also
used SPEs to “park” troubled assets that were falling in value, such as certain
overseas energy facilities, the broadband operation or stock in companies that
had been spun off to the public.
Transferring these assets to SPEs meant their
losses would be kept off Enron’s books. To compensate partnership investors for
downside risk, Enron promised issuance of additional shares of its stock.
As
the value of the assets in these partnerships fell, Enron began to incur larger
and larger obligations to issue its own stock later down the road. Compounding
the problem toward the end was the precipitous fall in the value of Enron
stock. Enron conducted business through thousands of SPEs. -
Enron's complex
financial statements were confusing to shareholders and analysts. In
addition, its complex business model and unethical practices required that the
company use accounting limitations to misrepresent earnings and modify the
balance sheet to indicate favorable performance. Enron was estimated to have
about $23 billion in liabilities from both debt outstanding and guaranteed
loans
Enron's shareholders lost $74 billion in the four years before the
company's bankruptcy ( $45 billion was attributed to fraud). As
Enron had nearly $67 billion that it owed creditors, employees and shareholders
received limited, if any, assistance aside from severance from Enron.

In his 2005 Budget
speech, finance minister P Chidambaram has proposed the setting up of a
financial special purpose vehicle (SPV) to fund projects in the infrastructure
sector.
The proposed SPV is expected to lend funds, especially debt funds of
longer maturity, directly to eligible projects to supplement loans from banks
and financial institutions. The SPV, according to the proposal, will become a
vehicle for channelising funds for projects in the roads, ports, airports, and
tourism sectors.
SPV is also called
special purpose entity (SPE) or special purpose corporation (SPC). In the
recent past, it was the Enron debacle that popularised this word, though for
the wrong reasons.
SPVs are mostly formed
to raise funds from the market. Technically, an SPV is a company. It has to
follow the rules of formation of a company laid down in the Companies Act.
Like
a company, the SPV is an artificial person. It has all the attributes of a
legal person. It is independent of members subscribing to the shares of the
SPV. The SPV has an existence of its own in the eyes of law. It can sue and be
sued in its name.
The SPV has to adhere to all the regulations laid down in the
Companies Act. Members of an SPV are mostly the companies and individuals
sponsoring the entity. An SPV can also be a partnership firm. This, however, is
unusual.
The company, as
distinguished from an SPV, may be called a general purpose vehicle. A company
may do many things which are mentioned in the memorandum of association (MoA)
or permitted by the Companies Act.
An SPV may also do the same, but its scope
of operation is limited and focused. If it is not so, the SPV had better be
called a company. The MoA is quite narrow in the case of an SPV. This is
primarily to provide comfort to lenders who are concerned about their
investment.
Like a company, an SPV
must have promoter(s) or sponsor(s). Usually, a sponsoring corporation hives
off assets or activities from the rest of the company into an SPV. This
isolation of assets is important for providing comfort to investors.
The assets
or activities are distanced from the parent company, hence the performance of
the new entity will not be affected by the ups and downs of the originating
entity.
The SPV will be subject to fewer risks and thus provide greater comfort
to the lenders. What is important here is the distance between the sponsoring
company and the SPV. In the absence of adequate distance between the sponsor
and the new entity, the later will not be an SPV but only a subsidiary company.
A good SPV should be
able to stand on its feet, independent of the sponsoring company.
Unfortunately, this does not happen in practice. One of the reasons for the
collapse of the Enron SPV was that it became a vehicle for furthering the ends
of the parent company in violation of the prudential norms of corporate
financing and accounting.
SPEs can be either on
shore or offshore. Special purpose corporations are used for a variety of
legitimate purposes, including structured risk management solutions.
In
securitizations, the SPE houses the asset risk either through the purchase of
the assets or in synthetic form. The assets are then used as collateral for
notes issued by the SPE.
SPEs can be used
for illegitimate purposes. Several
structures lend themselves to money laundering, disguising loans as revenue to
misstate earnings, concealment of losses, embezzlement, and other accounting
improprieties.
Even when used legitimately, the way the issuance of SPEs is
represented is ethically marginal.
Much
of the Enron accounting issues revolved around special-purpose entities. Humans
haven't mastered the art of cloning. But corporations have.
A company can
create a "mini-me" of its own, a special-purpose entity, and apply
for cheap financing. It's actually one of the main reasons corporations use
special-purpose entities.
Let's assume a company needs financing for a new
product. It could be anything -- building a new pipeline, constructing a new
building. Because of the already existing debt on its balance sheet, the banks
may loan the money at a hypothetical interest rate of, say, 8%.
That interest
rate makes the chief financial officer flinch. So, instead of applying for the
loan itself, the company sets up a special-purpose entity (sometimes referred
to as special-purpose vehicles or the securitization of assets.)
Think of the SPE as a
trust. (So don't bother trying to call it -- no one will answer!) To establish
this trust, the company must sell the SPE an asset -- any of the ones listed on
its balance sheet will do. In this case, it sells its receivable balance and
therefore must remove it from the balance sheet.
The SPE pays the company for
the receivables with the money it collects from these new investors and the
company gets to beef up the cash section of its balance sheet.
So the SPE has one big
asset on its books. It now can hit the pavement and go find some money for its
new project. It is essentially using the receivable as a security to peddle to
the market, hence the moniker -- the securitization of assets.
With only one asset on
its books, investors won't be hard to find. Even better, they're willing to
accept a lower interest rate because it appears that the repayment of their
loan is a pretty sure thing since the SPE has no other debt.
Assuming the parent
company has not offered a guarantee on the loan, the company no longer has
connections to the SPE. And in turn, the SPE's creditors now only have claim to
the assets of the SPE. So everyone is happy, right? The firm just got a lower
interest rate for the money it needs to finance a new project and the new
investors locked into a reasonably safe loan.
Well don't forget about
the company's creditors. They aren't all that thrilled with the fact that the
company sold off one of its assets, especially if it did so at a loss. Now how
are they going to get paid?
And of course, anyone
who spends a second looking at financial statements may be a little perturbed
by this arrangement as well. In many instances, we'd like to see that debt
reported on the company's balance sheet.
But as long as the company is not
liable for the SPE's debt, FASB allows the transaction to be reported
off-balance sheet.. Enron guaranteed some of its SPEs debt with its own shares.
But even in that case, the accounting rules still do not require the company to
report that on its balance sheet. It just needs to disclose that guarantee in
the footnotes..
SPEs can be a legitimate way to remove risk from the balance
sheet. So if a company is embarking on a precarious project, setting it up in a
SPE can shelter the entire company from the threat of it failing.
And SPEs have been
around for years, stuffed away in some footnote. We can thank Enron for
bringing them to our daily dinner conversation. And, in turn, fault Enron for
putting SPEs under a microscope.
Perhaps PNC Bank is blaming Enron for the $155
million earning hit it was forced to take because the SEC forced it to include
three SPEs on its balance sheet, rather barely giving them a mention in the
footnotes.
In Enron's case, it
appears that many of the SPEs were created strictly for the benefit of a select
few members of top management. Due to
accounting loopholes, these vehicles can become a means for Chief financial
officers to conceal debit.
Normally , it looks like the company do not have a
liability when in fact they do. On 2 December 2001 Enron was declared
bankruptcy and more than 21,000 employees were wiped out. Shares were sold for
as much as $90 went down to 61 cents. Enron became the first largest corporate
to file bankruptcy the time.
When the investigations
started, it was discovered that Enron
had performed a very complicated form of accounting racket through its repeated
use of Special Purpose Entities (S.P.Es). The SPE has an inherently evil structure
whose purpose is to manipulate, defraud and obfuscate a company’s financial
results

depository bank would and therefore are not subject to the same regulations.
Complex legal entities comprising the system include hedge funds, structured
investment vehicles (SIV), special purpose entity conduits (SPE), money market
funds, repurchase agreement (repo) markets and other non-bank financial
institutions.
Many shadow banking entities are sponsored by banks or are
affiliated with banks through their subsidiaries or parent bank holding
companies.
The inclusion of money market funds in the definition of shadow
banking has been questioned in view of their relatively simple structure and
the highly regulated and unleveraged nature of these entities, which are
considered safer, more liquid, and more transparent than banks.

Since almost no bank
can liquidate all its assets within a short period without suffering a loss in
value, a problem of illiquidity can essentially turn into a problem of
insolvency and the collapse of the bank.

Depositors are acting
rationally when they withdraw their deposits even at the smallest hint of bad
news.More often than not, such bank runs are hardly limited to just one bank,
precipitating what is called a banking panic.
Broadly speaking,
credit intermediation through the shadow banking system is much like that
through a traditional bank—it fulfills the principal function of qualitative
asset transformation.
However, unlike traditional banking, which involves a
simple process of deposit-taking and originating loans that are held to
maturity, shadow banking employs a much more complicated process to achieve
maturity transformation.
At the deposit end of the shadow banking system are
wholesale investors (providers of funds) using the repo market and money market
intermediaries such as money market mutual funds (MMMFs) to provide short-term
loans that are essentially withdrawable on demand.
At the loan origination end
are finance companies and even traditional banks that engage in the activity of
originating loans, much like the traditional banking system.
The shadow banking
system intermediates between the ultimate consumer of funds (borrower) and the
wholesale investor of funds, whose liquidity needs may preclude long-term
investments.
Shadow banking comprises a chain of intermediaries that are engaged
in the transfer of funds channeled upstream in exchange for securities and loan
documents that are moving downstream.
Therefore, what was once accomplished
under a single roof in the traditional banking system is now done over a
sequence of steps in the shadow banking system, each performed by specialized
entities that are not vertically integrated.

The Special Purpose
Vehicles (SPV) are typically organized as trusts to which the seller/sponsor
transfers the loan documents (receivables)—sometimes on a rolling basis. The
trust issues securities or trust certificates, which are then sold to
investors.
Notably, SPVs are legal
entities with no employees and no locations, merely created by the
administrator to hold the pool of loans and generate the securities.
Technically, an SPV is bankruptcy-remote; this implies that if the administrator
(creator of the SPV) were to enter a bankruptcy procedure, the administrator's
creditors cannot seize the assets of the SPV.
On the other hand, administrators
will often provide an implicit guarantee beyond their contractual obligations
to provide support to the SPV in the event of deterioration in asset
performance.
Tranching is the process by which payouts on the obligations are
sliced, or tranched, into classes, whereby the highest (senior-most) class of
securities has seniority of claim over subordinated securities.
Accordingly,
the more senior-rated tranches are less risky and generally have lower yields
and higher bond credit ratings than the lower-rated tranches.
An SPV may sell
tranches of various classes linked by a waterfall structure—a term referring to
loans that are paid sequentially from the most senior-rated tranches to
most-subordinate tranches..
"Tranche" is actually a French word
meaning "slice" or "portion". In the world of investing, it
is used to describe a security that can be split up into smaller pieces and
subsequently sold to investors. In structured finance, a tranche is one of a
number of related securities offered as part of the same transaction.
Tranching
can add complexity to deals. With increased complexity, less sophisticated
investors have a harder time understanding them and thus are less able to make
informed investment decisions. In case of default, different tranches may have
conflicting goals, which can lead to expensive and time-consuming lawsuits,
called tranche warfare (punning on trench warfare)
Tranches with a first
lien on the assets of the asset pool are referred to as senior tranches and are
generally safer investments. Typical investors of these types of securities
tend to be conduits, insurance companies, pension funds and other risk averse
investors.
Tranches with either a
second lien or no lien are often referred to as "junior notes". These
are more risky investments because they are not secured by specific assets. The
natural buyers of these securities tend to be hedge funds and other investors
seeking higher risk/return profiles.

information also suggests that the more junior tranches of structured products
are often bought by specialist credit investors, while the senior tranches
appear to be more attractive for a broader, less specialised investor
community". Here is a simplified example to demonstrate the principle:

Chinese banks are using
complex financial engineering to disguise risky loans as “investments”,
rendering traditional risk metrics such as non-performing loan ratios virtually
useless.
While profits and asset growth at China’s big four state-owned commercial
banks have flatlined, midsized Chinese lenders continue to grow aggressively
through shadow banking.
Banks can channel funds to a corporate borrower by buying
so-called trust beneficiary right or private placement asset management plans
from an intermediary such as a trust company, brokerage or special purpose
vehicle. The intermediary then extends loans to companies. Banks classify the
assets they hold in these third parties as “investment receivables” or “debt
receivables”, not loans.

China Banking Regulatory Commission, banks can no longer use wealth
management funds to invest directly or indirectly in their own investment
products. The lenders will also have to fully provision for the investment
products that are based on bank loans.
China's campaign to cut
high debt levels in its economy is aiming this year to shrink the $3 trillion
shadow banking sector, which could drain a critical source of income for the
country's banks and of funding for its fragile bond market.

While banks are
required to set aside provisions for the loans on their balance sheets to
protect the interests of investors, most wealth management product investments
are reported on the income statement, enabling lenders to avoid capital

A major factor behind
the soaring growth of risky wealth-management products in China is that
investors typically think the government stands behind them.
Lately, nervous
regulators have been emphasizing that this isn’t so. Wealth-management products
are short-term, high-yielding investments that are issued by banks.
The market
for such products is now worth close to $4 trillion, or nearly 40 percent of
China’s gross domestic product. Banks are heavily reliant on them for
liquidity, and investors have come to view them as more or less risk-free,
thanks to previous government bailouts.
Wealth management
products that offer the most risk are often
ones that deliver the highest return.
Mutual Funds are one of
the most commonly known types of wealth management products available
today.
A large number of investors pool
their money with wealth managers, and the manager then invests those funds in
Securities, Equities, Bonds, CDs or other investment vehicles. The biggest
mistake that Mutual Fund investors make is not knowing what the fund is
investing in.

Fund itself, but the underlying investments held in the fund that determine its
risk profile.

appealing. Similar in concept to Private Equity Funds, Hedge Funds use money

"long/short" investing strategies means the Funds are sometimes
significantly "over leveraged" (use borrowed money) to meet their
rates of returns.

The Financial Stability
Forum's Working Group on Offshore Financial Centers was set up to review the
uses and activities of OFCs and their significance for global financial
stability.
The Financial Stability Forum (FSF) was a group consisting of major
national financial authorities such as finance ministries, central bankers, and
international financial bodies.
The Forum was founded in 1999 to promote
international financial stability. Its founding resulted from discussions among
Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of the G7 countries, and a study
which they commissioned.
The Forum facilitated discussion and co-operation on
supervision and surveillance of financial institutions, transactions and
events.
The global financial
crisis raised serious questions about the ability of national regulators and
the existing international financial regulatory system to oversee global
finance. The FSF was put in place in 1999 to address the stability of the global
financial markets, but its membership was limited and its role was merely
advisory.
The 2008 financial crisis was more widespread than anyone had
imagined, revealing substantive, fundamental weaknesses that could not be
addressed within the FSF framework. Under the new FSB charter, the mandate was
expanded to develop, implement and oversee the supervisory and regulatory
policies for the entire global financial system.
Although it operates as an
independent body, the FSB is still accountable to the G-20 to prepare reports
on issues of global importance. The FSB is also responsible for overseeing the
policy-development functions of all the international standard-setting bodies,
such as the Basel Committee, the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB)
and the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), to
improve overall institutional accountability.
This is also done to ensure
global compliance with international financial standards. The FSB also acts as
a centralized regulatory body to monitor compliance on a country-by-country and
regional basis. Working with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the FSB is
part of an early warning system to detect potential financial turmoil.
FSB now
monitors the shadow banking system. The
FSB is in the process of determining whether non-bank financial activities
present systemic risks to the financial system. In 2013, the FSB stepped up its
efforts to regulate the shadow banking system, which has the potential to
subject non-bank institutions, such as broker-dealers, finance companies and
asset managers, to bank-like regulations.
Emerging blockchain technologies and

fully agree with what iht has written above capt. today's win- Thrilled/relieved/hopeful for our country capt. you have given people like myself the confidence to challenge the many false things that is written about hindus, hinduism and about india. capt, i know you had written somewhere earlier, that you veered into commenting on the indian elections and politics only in the last few months, and that was not the purpose of your blogs. but CAPT, india needs you and BJP also needs your watchful eyes and guidance. please don't be harsh to sushma swaraj and arun jaitley. they might not be perfect, but both are brilliant people with good intentions who will do good for bharat no? capt, one more thing, in your quick wins, advice amongst other things, that needed to be tackled on a war footing(cleaning up the environment,/noise/air pollution/spitting/defecating in public), the internet porn sites need to be banned. I heard from my sister last week( she runs aol classes for slum children, and school kids), that almost 60% of the kids (age group of 9-13) had access/watched porn and it was spreading fast. They were seriously affected by it, and there is not enough help. I don’t think she was exaggerating capt. This is worrying.

Deletei am asking after reading piston thin from marine- engineering post, i think i have asked before also about this.
Do four stroke engine can be alternated by skipping couple of cycles of stroke to save fuel, i think the piston has inertia once it had reached it's optimal or deserved speed.... can't it be done, i have asked this to other engineers and their answer some say it could and some say no, mainly their concern it would create stress on engine as many moving and firing components has to be switched off and later bring them on...
i remember TVS had come up with four stroke engine with same concept(TVS Centra), many buyers complained about that engine on and off and bike production stopped.

I will leave technical matters aside , as it is beyond the scope of this post.
As soon as the ship’s engines were stopped by chief engineer I had to immediately ring him up and tell his to keep the engine turning at slow speed to prevent thermal shock. He said it is NOT possible- so I had to tell him to put on blowers on manual.
I immediately went to the SCAVENGE AIR RECEIVER PAGE on the computer ( duplicated on bridge ) and found from the trend graphs of temperature and pressure , that the engines suffered a scavenge air receiver EXPLOSION – no wonder the turbocharger came to a grinding halt probably with debris and heat expansion.
Then I had to deal with a STUPID old Yank pilot.
He wanted to drop anchor –LETT GOOO ANCHOZZZZZZ .
I said- at this residual speed of 15 knots and water depth I will lose my anchors—and where is the imminent need – I showed him a spot on the chart and told him to take the ship there
Then he wanted to start the bow thruster – and I had to tell him that it wont work—only the rudder can turn or steer the ship.
There was NO point in explaining to this stupid old man that the fulcrum of the ship’s lever is almost on the bows and the bow thruster can only function when the speed drops to less than 4 knots.
And I had to be nice with him, or he would report to the US Coast Guard and then we are screwed .

My chief engineer was sitting there and sweating without providing leadership.
I asked him what the problem is- he did NOT have a clue—and gave me all sorts of wrong diagnosis –like asshole problem/ throat problem/ liver problem/ kidney problem —when the problem was with the lungs .
The engine needs air and fuel. An automated engine shuts down by itself – that is why you are given TREND GRAPHS on the computer for every single part of the engine.
So I had to give him orders –how to blank the turbocharger – I refused to take his EMERGENCY REQUISITION message for a brand new turbocharger ( TEE HEE ) and that too the wrong model .
To cut a long story short-
HERE WAS A DOCTOR WHOSE SON VOMITED AND HE WANTS TO DO A TEETH TRANSPLANT.
This is how stupid Western Chief Engineers are – as unlike Indians they are NOT mechanical Engineer graduates after a 4 year course. They all came up as oilers and motormen-practical knowledge exists but theory is poor.
There is a HUGE difference between a heart surgeon and his nurse who has been with him ever since he started surgery.

The turbocharger fan blades were stuck and frozen- I predicted that it will become loose by itself if we give 20 minutes cooling time , assisted by a compressed air hose.
I went back on the bridge to drop anchor
I got a call from the Chief Engineer , that the turbocharger blades were turning smooth jut by air from the engine room ventilation.
So here we were as good as new.
My Chief engineer was excellent in taking a PRESSURE VOLUME draw diagram- but he was ZERO when it came to interpreting it.

Again we Indians were the first to use BIOCHAR for agriculture . It converts agricultural waste into a soil enhancer that can hold carbon, boost food security, and increase soil biodiversity, and discourage deforestation. The process creates a fine-grained, highly porous charcoal that helps soils retain nutrients and water.
Biochar serves as an electron buffer for redox reactions and helps bacteria swap electrons among themselves, improving their metabolic efficiency as a microbial community.. With its pores and its electrical charges, biochar is capable of both aBsorption and aDsorption.. The surfaces of biochar, both internal and external, aDsorb materials by electro-chemical bonds, working like an electric sponge.
Biochar surfaces adsorb carbon and retain it in compounds with minerals, supporting at the same time a large microbial community that potentially makes more efficient use of organic debris containing carbon and other nutrients.
Balanced compost, with the optimum C:N ratio, will contain lots of humus. However, if there is not enough stable carbon (from wood, straw or other lignin sources), then the easily degradable sugars, fats and proteins will be completely consumed by microbes leaving very little substrate behind
Both biochar and compost increases cation exchange capacity (CEC - the ability to hold onto and transfer nutrient cations: ammonium, calcium, magnesium, and potassium)…
They support soil microbial life and biodiversity and helps plants resist diseases and pathogens. They add humus carbon to the soil carbon pool, reducing the atmospheric carbon pool—and increases soil water holding capacity. In coastal areas they help plants grow better in high salt situations.

Adding biochar to compost reduced the amount of dissolved organic carbon (labile carbon) in mature compost while increasing the fraction of stable humic materials (stable carbon).

DeleteMany of the nutrients that are essential for the health of plants exist in the form of cations, which hold a positive electric charge. Since carbon is negatively charged, the cations are attracted to the carbon structure like a huge magnet.
Carbon plays an essential role in the process of soil holding onto cations. Using carbon allows the nutrients to stay on the surface of the soil where they are available for plants.
The capacity to which soil can hold cations is referred to as the Cation Exchange Capacity. Biochar counteracts the effects of nutrient leaching by increasing the cation exchange capacity of the soil.
Certain types of Biochar even have the capability of absorbing nutrients of negative charge, called anions. Essentially, biochar has incredible abilities when it comes to the absorption of nutrients, and as an effective solution to prevent nutrient leaching.
Cation-exchange capacity (CEC) is a measure of how many cations can be retained on soil particle surfaces. Negative charges on the surfaces of soil particles bind positively-charged atoms or molecules (cations), but allow these to exchange with other cations in the surrounding soil water. This is one of the ways that solid materials in soil alter the chemistry of the soil water.
CEC affects many aspects of soil chemistry, and is used as a measure of soil fertility, as it indicates the capacity of the soil to retain several nutrients (e.g. K+, NH4+, Ca2+) in plant-available form.
The reason for high cation exchange capacity on biochars is twofold: Firstly, there is an increase in the surface area after pyrolysis. Secondly there is an increase in charge density on the surface. Generally, the higher the pyrolysis temperature the higher the biochar surface area
Biochars produced at low pyrolysis temperatures have a high number of oxygenated functional groups (carboxyl, hydroxyl, phenol etc) and dorption primarily occurs by chemisorption. However, biochars produced at higher temperatures have a higher C:O ratio and a higher degree of aromaticity.. Generally, the higher the pyrolysis temperature the higher the biochar surface area.
The majority of plant nutrients are positively charged ions, known as cations, and include nitrogen, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Once it is exposed to oxygen, freshly produced biochar begins to form negatively charged sites on its surface known as "functional groups".
Cations in the soil solution are attracted to these sites and collect on the external and internal surfaces of the biochar. These nutrients are then available to the plants when they need them. Biochar has higher cation exchange capacity than humic matter.
