I HAVE YET TO SEE ANY SORT OF AWARENESS, ON HOW TO FIND OUT THE LEL OF CHEMICAL FUMES ON CHEMICAL TANKERS-
THIS INCLUDES SAILORS AT SEA , SUPERINTENDENTS ASHORE , EXTERNAL SHORE INSPECTORS AND SHORE TRAINING HOUSES.
If your gas instrument has been calibrated for is-butane,you must know that it reads for iso-butane, NOT any other gas.
On chemical tankers , we do NOT load iso-butane in the tanks --right?
Be safe -- you owe it to yourself --
1% LEL is 100 ppm.

Above the upper flammable limit (UFL) the mixture of substance and air is too rich in fuel (deficient in oxygen) to burn. This is sometimes called the upper explosive limit (UEL).
Below the lower flammable limit (LFL) the mixture of substance and air lacks sufficient fuel (substance) to burn. This is sometimes called the lower explosive limit (LEL).
Hydrocarbon gas requires air to sustain combustion in the parameters as follows:
1% gas to 99% air = Lower explosion Limit (LEL)
10% gas to 90% air = Upper Explosion Limit (UEL)
To prevent explosion:
Keep HC >11% ( too rich )
Keep HC < 1.5% ( too lean )
Keep oxygen < 11.5% ( inert )

Good day sir,
ReplyDeleteOne question on the flammability diagram
What is the line CD in your diagram above called ??
What is the significance of this line ??
Wht is it not a straight line ??
hi a,
Deleteyou have NOT understood it.

lol
Deletexplan if u knw tht anwr ,,,,sir
ReplyDeleteAB is line which indicates presence of only HC and air ( No inner gas).
ReplyDeleteCD is the flammable range in this condition. Any thing above D and Below C is safe.
Capt. Amol
sir
ReplyDeletei have a small doubt the imo oxygen content should be 5% or 8%?
hi nk,
Deletealmost all major terminals have local rules to have 5% oxygen in tanks
IMO for tank content is 8% with 5% delivery.

thnx sir
Deletevisiting your blog since 2013..
sir,
ReplyDeletenew requirement for tanker O2 content in to inert gas reduced from 8% to 5% , for what reason they reduce the level to be maintained in tanks?
KERALA PARAVUR TEMPLE DEATHS:
ReplyDeletehttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Massive-fire-at-Paravur-Puttingal-temple-in-Kerala/liveblog/51761690.cms
WHAT HAPPENED IS NOT A FIRE- BUT AN EXPLOSION --SABOTAGE
NOT ONE SINGLE MAIN STREAM MEDIA HAS TOLD THE WORD "EXPLOSION" IR "SABTOAGE"
ALL ARE BLAMING THE TEMPLE -- WITH THE GOAL OF SHUTTING DOWN TEMPLE FIREWORKS.
UNCONTROLLED COMBUSTION IS EXPLOSION . .
OUR SHIP'S ENGINE IS ONE LAKH TIMES THE SIZE AND POWER OF A CAR.
INSIDE THE 2 STROKE MAIN ENGINE CYLINDER WE HAVE "CONTROLLED COMBUSTION"
IF IT TURN TO "UNCONTROLLED EXPLOSION" THE CYLINDER HEAD WILL CRACK.
ONE ONE HUGE TANKER , WE HAD 4 CRACKED CYLINDER HEADS FOR LANDING ASHORE.
IN THE PAST ONE YEARS ON A 6 CYLINDER ENGINE, MORE THAN 20 CYLINDER HEADS HAD CRACKED.
I WENT TO THE ENGINE ROOM EVEN BEFORE TAKEOVER -- AND TALKED TO THE EUROPEAN CHIEF ENGINEER.
HE WAS INCOMPETENT-- AND HE HAD NOT TAKEN THE DRAW DIAGRAM OF THE MAIN ENGINES FOR THE PAST 5 MONTHS - THE MACHINE WAS THERE IN THE ECR, IN PRISTINE CONDITION.
MY FIRST MESSAGE TO MY COMPANY WAS --I WANT NEW CHIEF ENGINEER IN THE NEXT PORT
THE RESULTS ARE IN THE LINK BELOW-- I PROVED UNCONTROLLED EXPLOSION WAS TAKING PLACE .

http://ajitvadakayil.blogspot.in/2011/12/marine-engineering-self-examiner-ships.html
this is why all over the planet-- the examiners dip into my blogpost.
so many indian engineers and even examiners have thanked me.
http://ajitvadakayil.blogspot.in/2011/07/flammability-composition-diagram.html
WHAT HAPPENED AT PARAVUR TEMPLE WAS DELIBERATE SABOTAGE .
CHECK OUT THE SHATTERED TILES OF NEARBY HOUSES -- THIS CANNOT HAPPEN WITH MERE FIREWORKS.
WE DEMAND THAT MODI GOVT DOES PROPER INQUIRY AND PUNISH THE MEDIA FOR DOING ANTI-HINDU PROPAGANDA . ..
WE WANT BETTER TALENT IN MEDIA-- SPEAKING STYLISH ENGLISH IS NOT A QUALIFICATION. NO WONDER THE BENAMI MEDIA IS FULL OF WANNABE GORAGAANDS . .

Hello Sir
ReplyDeleteCan you please explain why the coordinates of point F is (4% O2 and 11% HC)
What is the reason?
Good day,
ReplyDeleteWhy line ab inclined. Thanks in advance.
Varun Mylate
Because as the conc. of HC increase in tank, conc. of O2 decrease. Hence slant line.
