This dance was at night . I asked her “ Do you know the theme ?“. She said it is about Narasimha and
Hiranyakashipu.
I asked her to attend and she did.
My wife never though much of Kathakali till
she saw this performance .
The fires, the drums, the crescendo cymbals –
it was a fantastic welcome assault on her senses.
She called me back on her drive home after midnight and said ” I am
glad I saw this performance . It is the best I have seen of any dance till
today. My heart is pounding and my ears are still
ringing. I can hardly drive . It was mind blowing the way Narasimha jumped out of the pillar with drums and cymbals crashing at crescendo “

According to Bhagavat
Purana, a Danava king named Hiranyakashipu had the intense desire to be
immortal. He was Vishnu’s gatekeeper Vijaya , who was
reborn later as Kumbhakarna ( Ravana’s brother ) and Dantavakra.
To fulfill this desire,
he performed severe Tapas ( penances ) .
He was granted a boon by Brahma. Since
the Gods rarely granted immortality, he used his guile and cunning to get a
boon that he thought made him immortal.
The boon gave Hiranyakashyapu five
special powers: he could be killed by neither a human being nor an animal,
neither indoors nor outdoors, neither at day nor at night, neither by astra (
scalar projectile weapons) nor by any shastra (handheld weapons), and neither
on land nor in water or air or by anything born from a living womb
As this wish was granted, Hiranyakashyapu felt
invincible, which made him arrogant with opposite camp bitter rivals
Devas. His son Prahlad was unhappy with his father’s
arrogance. He continued keeping good
relations with Devas.
This made
Hiranyakashipu very angry , he considered his own son Prahalad as a traitor and
made various attempts to kill Prahlad. During
a particular attempt on Prahlad's life, King Hiranyakashyapu called upon his
sister Holika for help.
Holika had a
special cloak garment that prevented her from being harmed by fire.
Hiranyakashyapu asked her to sit on a bonfire with Prahlad, by tricking the boy
to sit on her lap.
However, as the fire roared, Prahalada chanted Narayana
mantra --- the garment flew from Holika and covered Prahlad. Holika burnt to
death, Prahlad came out unharmed. Holi festival is to celebrate Holika’s death.
Holika was not aware that the boon
worked only when she entered the fire alone.
Prahalada prayed to
Vishnu to kill his own father .
Vishnu appeared in the
form of Narasimha - half human and half lion, at dusk (when it was neither day
nor night), took Hiranyakashyapu at a doorstep (which was neither indoors nor
outdoors), placed him on his lap (which was neither land, water nor air), and
then eviscerated and killed the king with his lion claws (which were neither a
handheld weapon nor a launched weapon).
In this form, the boon of five special
powers granted to Hiranyakashyapu were no longer useful.
Prahlad was free of fear of
Hiranyakashyapu, showing the victory of good over evil ( sic )..
After the death of his
father, Prahlada took his father's kingdom and ruled peacefully and virtuously.
He was known for his generosity and kindness. He sowed similar seeds in his son
Virochana and grandson Mahabali.
But Mahabali made bitter rivals Devas nervous
when he did the Ashwamedha Yagna.
Shukracharya the mentor of Danavas was in fact getting even with his classmate and bitter rival Brihaspati, the mentor of Devas . Shukracharya was better than Brihaspati every which way at the Gurukul but the Guru Maharishi Angirasa ( Brihaspati's father ) always supported his own son . Angirasa suggested the name of his own son when Devas wanted a mentor . To add to enmity Brihaspati's son Kacha did LOVE JIHAD of Shukrachary's beautiful daughter Devyani.
There
was a time when India ruled the whole planet half the planet worshipped Shukracharya and
the other half worshipped Brihaspati.
Virochana and Mahabali ruled the whole planet –based in Kerala.
This continued to 7000
BC. After 7000 BC , India ruled from
Palestine to Urals to Vietnam.
Mahabali was the descendant of sage Kashyapa.
In Kerala Hindus,
Muslims, Christians –all celebrate Onam in memory of our beloved King Mahabali.
After Mahabali was
banished to Patala at his prime – his old father Virochana ( son of Prahalada )
came back to the throne he vacated. He was
also killed by deceit by the devas.
Blessed with a dazzling golden crown, a boon from the sun-god.
Virochana had received the benediction that
he could not be killed as long as he wore the crown. Knowing this, the devas conspired against
him. Disguised as sages, they entreated him, and the generous Virochana vowed
to grant their wish. They begged for his crown.
Even though Virochana
recognized the demigods' plot, true to his word he parted with his crown and
his life as well. (Srimad-Bhagavatam 8.19.14 -5000 BC )

Kathakali
is a complex amalgam of culture , story, dance, theatre, poetry, vocals and
percussion, each component governed by well-defined rules . It takes decades to be qualify as a Kathakali
dancer, starting at a young age .
This
is NOT some stupid tip-toe on toes , splaying your legs , showing your camel toe/ ass to the accompaniment of a
hollering soprano male/ female quivering
their deep throats .
You
must do your homework before viewing a Kathakali performance.
It is imperative
that you know the story line and characters

difficult acts to execute on stage, with young artists preparing for their

The actors speak a "sign language", where

Kathakali performance is long, starting at dusk and continuing through dawn,

continued over several nights, alomost like a modern TV serial starting at dusk

The stage with seating typically in open grounds outside a temple,
but in some places special theatres called Kuttampalam built inside the temple
compounds have been in use
The performance is in
the front of a huge Kalivilakku (kali meaning dance; vilakku meaning lamp) with
its thick wick sunk in coconut oil, burning with a yellow light
Kathakali’s generic
structure may be viewed in terms of mudras (hand gestures), rhythm, body
movements (kinetics), body language (kinesics), performance methods, costumes
and make-up (aharya).
Rasa is prepared,
states Natya Shastra, through a creative synthesis and expression of vibhava
(determinants), anubhava (consequents) and vyabhicharibhava (transitory
states).
In the process of
emotionally engaging the individual in the audience, the text outlines the use
of eight sentiments – loving, comic, pathetic, terrible, furious, odious,
heroic and marvelous..
The Natyashastra defines drama as that which
aesthetically arouses joy in the spectator, through the medium of actor's art
of communication, that helps connect and transport the individual into a super
sensual inner state of being.
Drama in this ancient
Sanskrit text, thus is an art to engage every aspect of life, in order to
glorify and gift a state of joyful consciousness.
The text discusses the
universal and inner principles of drama, that it asserts successfully affects
and journeys the audience to a supersensual state of discovery and
understanding. The stories and plots were provided by the Itihasas (epics), the
Puranas and the Kathas genre of Hindu literature
The function of drama
and the art of theatre, as envisioned in Natyashastra is to restore the human potential, man's
journey of "delight at a higher level of consciousness", and a life
that is enlightened.
Just like the taste of
food, states Natyashastra, is determined by combination of vegetables, spices
and other articles such as sugar and salt, the audience tastes dominant states
of a drama through expression of words, gestures and temperaments.
These
dominant states are love, mirth, sorrow, anger, energy, terror, disgust and
astonishment.
There are 33
psychological states which are transitory such as discouragement, weakness,
apprehension, intoxication, tiredness, anxiety, agitation, despair, impatience
There are eight temperamental states that a
drama can deploy to carry its message.[69] The text describes four means of
communication between the actors and the audience – words, gestures, dresses
and aharya (make ups, cosmetics), all of which should be harmonious with the
temperament envisioned in the drama.
The ideal poem produces
bliss in the reader, or listener. It transports the audience into an
imaginative world, transforms his inner state, and delivers him to a higher
level of consciousness, suggests Natyashastra. Great songs do not instruct or
lecture, they delight and liberate from within to a state of godlike ecstasy.
The text defines the
basic dance unit to be a karana, which is a specific combination of the hands
and feet integrated with specific body posture and gait (sthana and chari
respectively). There are 108 karanas as
the building blocks to the art of dance
The text states the
various movements of major and minor limbs with facial states as means of
articulating ideas and expressing emotions

Natyashastra, centers around three
themes – sound, rhythm and prosody applied to musical texts. The text asserts
that the octave has 22 srutis or microintervals of musical tones or 1200
cents.
The greeks stole all this while
studing at Kodungallur University in Kerala and patented it in their own

Each sruti computes to 54.5
cents, while the Greek enharmonic quartertone system computes to 55 cents
The
text discusses gramas (scales) and murchanas (modes), mentioning three scales
of seven modes (21 total), some of which are the same as the Greek modes..
The Natysashastra text
has been influential in other arts.
The 108 dance forms described in the Natyasastra,
for example, have inspired Shiva sculptures
Several ancient
Sanskrit texts such as Natya Shastra and Hastha Lakshanadeepika discuss hand
gestures or mudras.
Kathakali follows the Hastha Lakshana deepika
most closely, unlike other classical dances of India
Hasta Mudras in
Kathakali or the codified finger movements in Kathakali are full of definite
symbolical significance and meaning and are effective substitutes for spoken
language.
Imitative, technical and suggestive they are cent per cent symbolical
and denote objects, actions and even inflection. Hasta Lakshana Deepika and
Abhinaya Darpana are two standard works on Mudras.
The Mudras which constitute
the alphabet of a language of more than seven hundred words aim at indirect suggestion
rather than direct exposition. Each pose has a different name. Greater
significance has been attached to indirect suggestion.
Mudras have their
origin in the Tantric rites of the old.
Kathakali depicts
scenes of love, battles, heroic exploits, lyrical situations, fits of rage and
cruelty, religious ceremonies blend into a story that always affirms the
victory of the Gods/ Good over the Demons / Evil.
The Kathakali dancer
embodies this struggle with his own body.
Kathakali then ceases to be a danced drama, and an ancient ritual is
substituted for it.
The dancer, by the
eloquence and expressiveness of his gesticulation, his movements of the feet
and the body, and by his mimicry, must plunge the spectator not only into the
atmosphere and the action of the drama, and also reconstruct the place where it takes place.
Subtle gestures,
movements, body position or rhythmic sequence are not an attempt to present a
reality directly, but to represent it reconstruct it by means of
"figures", "ideograms" whose conventional symbolic meaning
escapes the uininitiated and the profane --who sees such a spectacle for the
first time.
This complex alphabet
of signs, consists of facial expressions, gesticulations, and pre-established
corporeal kinetics. There are thus nine
movements of the head, eleven ways of looking, six movements of the eyebrows,
four positions of the neck.
The movements of the limbs - in all sixty-four -
include those of the feet, the toes, the heels, the ankles, the waist, the
hips, in short all the flexible parts of the body.
The face is the
emotional mirror of the actor. The actor expresses and communicates through the
action of the neck, eyes, eyelashes, iris, eyebrows, lips, teeth, nose, ears,
chin, cheeks and tongue-deep psychic processes.
When
struck with terror, he successively raises one eyebrow after another,
widens his eyes, rapidly moves the irises from one corner of his eye to the
other, he dilates his nostrils, his cheekbones tremble while his head turns by
jerky movements.
When the actor is
seized with an attack of rage, his eyebrows tremble, he raises his lower
eyelids, his eyes fixed and penetrating, his nostrils trembling as well as the
lips, the jaws closely tightened, and he does not breathe , Thus causing an
alteration of the features of his face.
This determined
composition of the face expresses not only feelings like love or hatred, but
also psychic and mental reactions, as well as characteristic attitudes such as
curiosity, pride, anxiety over death, or generosity.
But an actor does not
exteriorize the emotional states of the role mechanically. The expressivity, or
rather the truth of each reaction of his face, is convincing only if he engages
his imagination and his psychic and mental resources.
This wonderful gesture language has in it all
the potentialities of a universal medium of effectively expressing thoughts.
The mudras permit endless permutations and combinations, providing ample scope
to the talented artists endowed with originality to express his rare and full
volumed genius.
Hast-Mudras are shown
with one hand and both hands as befitting the occasion.
Showing a basic Mudra
with one hand is called Asamyukta pose while showing the same root Mudra with
both hands is called Samyukta Pose. The display of one root mudra with one hand
and simultaneously another root mudra with other hand is known as Misra.
The
twenty-four basic mudras are Pataka, Mudrakhya, Kataka, Mushti Kartarimukha,
Sukatunda Kappitthaka, Hamsa-paksha, Sikhara, Hamsasyam, Anjali, Ardhachandra,
Mukura, Bhramara, Suchimukha, Pallava, Tripataka, Mrigasirsha, Sarpasira
Vardhamanaka, Arala, Urnanabha, Mukula and Katamugha.
There are 24 Basic
Mudras (hand gestures) in the "Hasthalakshana Deepika", the book of
hand gestures, which Kathakali is followed. There are 'Asamyutha Mudras' (that
is shown using single hand) and 'Samyutha Mudras' (mudras shown in double
hands) in each Basic Mudras, to show different symbols.
Considering all these
Mudras and their seperations there are totally 470 symbols used in Kathakali.
Mudras (hand gestures)
are the mainstay of communication in Kathakali. The Mudras convey meaningful
interpretations, poetic meanings, sentiments and dramatic actions.
A mudra is not a static
entity;it communicates only when it becomes dynamic along with body movements. The
significance of the three levels, which is head, chest and waist, at which
different mudras are delineated. A combination of the mudras at the three
levels to form ‘sentences’

The Nava Rasas are the
nine emotions in Kathakali
Rasa is accomplished as
a result of the conjunction of Vibhava, anubhava and vybhicari bhava
It means the flavour of
essence. There are basically nine rasas which is nava (nine) rasa and it
corresponding bhava or emotion.
The rasa can be seen as
the equals of the daily life emotions or bhava.

Sthayi Bhavas is nine
as there are nine Rasas, each Sthayi-Bhava having a respective Rasa. Sthayi Bhavas have a few Sanchari Bhavas
which have a close relation with Sthayi Bhavas and these
Sanchari Bhavas bring up the Sthayi-Bhavas; they show their importance only at times or else they are helping factors. They are always changing and moving about and so they are called Sanchari.

Vyabhicari [Sanchari]
Bhavas – They are thirty three in number viz. Nirveda (Despondency), Glani
(Weakness), Sanka (Suspicious), Asuya (envy), Mada (Inebriation), Srama
(exhaustion), Alasya (lethargy), Dainya (Depression), Cinta (anxiety), Moha (delusion),
Smrti (recollection), Dhrti (fortitude), Vrida (Bashfulness), Capalata (in
constancy), Harsa (joy), Avega (excitement), Jadata (Stupefaction), Garva (Arrogance),
Visada (Despair), Autsukya (impatient curiosity), Nidra (sleep), Apasmara (Loss
of memory), Svapna (Dreaming), Prabodha (Wakening), Amarsa (indignation),
Avahittha (Dissimulation), Ugrata (Cruelty), Mati (self assurance), Vyadhi
(Sickness), Unmada (madness), Marana (death), Trasa (fright)and Virarka
(deliberation).
The eight Bhavas can
only be felt with a sensitive heart and an involved mind. With the oneness with
the characters’ emotions, an actor can physically represent them.
The sastra also
mentions about the temperamental emotions and put them at the highest level as
far as the actors’ feelings and capability of delivering is concerned. They are
termed as Satvika Bhavas in the Natya Sastra

The Sattvika Bhavas are
eight in number. They originate from the physical form. They are Stambha
(Paralysis), Sveda (Sweat), Romanca (horripilation), Svarasada (feebleness in
the voice), Vepathu (Trembling), Vaivarnya (change of color), Asru (Shedding
tears), Pralaya (Loss of Sense).

Thus, physical
expression of the feelings of the mind are called sattvika. The theory of rasas
forms the aesthetic underpinning of all Indian classical dance and theatre
Expressing Rasa in
classical Indian dance form is referred to as Rasa-abhinaya. The Natyashastra
carefully delineates the bhavas used to create each rasa.
The expressions used in
Kathakali are exaggerated theatrical expressions
Comparison of Bhava ,
Vibhava and Anubhava -- (Being, Feeling
and Doing).
Bhava ( to emote ) is the essence of literary and performing
art.
Bhava is the becoming.
In other words, everything (objective or material) that can exist or comes in
to existence is bhava.
Going by this simple
understanding, the state of mind and even the material conditions like birth
and death or growth and decay or existence and transformation is bhava.
This understanding can
be extended to artistic creativity. The ‘feeling’ and ‘the thought process’ are
the direct outcome of the state of mind in real life and at the same time,
attributes like place, time, action, movement, gesture, posture, etc. can also
be defined and described as bhava.
The only difference
that needs to be acknowledged is that in real life “becoming” is more due to
direct implications of what we call the law of causation and with the reference
to artistic creativity, it is the artist who influences it; using the sheer
power of his imagination and creativity.
The artist does this by
creating situations, incidents, characters and infusing attributes like
feelings, thoughts, actions etc. It would be termed as process of “becoming”
with the reference to artistic creativity more as, induced or caused and not as
a production of material thing.
“Nispatti” should be
more interpreted as “Samavitti” means the process of creating intellectual
awareness of an emotional experience through the means of Vibhava and other
factors in the minds of the bhavaka or the spectator .
Bhava or to emote is
the essence of literary and performing art. Bhava is becoming. Going by this
simple understanding, state of mind and even the material conditions like birth
& death or growth & decay or existence & transformation is
bhava.
The Concept of Vibhava
Vibhava (hetu, karana, nimmita) means ‘cause’ of what happens or is happening
in life. Its primary purpose is to
create the awareness of the emotions that the author intends to.
With the reference to
artistic presentation (creative expression),Vibhava can be interpreted as,
developing the knowledge or understanding of a specific emotion (mental state)
that the creator (Author) intends to convey through the means and modes of
acting.
The Vibhavas are of two
types one is ‘Aalambana Vibhava’ and the other is ‘Uddipana Vibhava’.
In broader sense, they
are the internal and external causes of something. ‘Alambana vibhava’ is source
of a particular emotion that determines its nature and ‘Uddipana vibhava’ is
the one, which enhances the emotion caused by a stimulant. It has no direct
bearing or connection with the cause or consequence and it is not a part of the
process but indirectly plays the role of enhancer of a particular emotion borne
out of a stimulant
The Concept of Anubhava
‘Anu’ is a Sanskrit word and in this context, it means “in reaction to”! Here
in this case since it is the natural reaction of body to ‘Vibhava’ it is termed
as ‘Anubhava’.
Apparently, there is a
very thin line of demarcation between the two; yet they cannot be termed as the
same because Vibhava is the cause and Anubhava is its consequence.
Vibhava is definitive
whereas Anubhava is not definitive. The simple reason for this is: it is not
possible to link Anubhava with a specific emotion (mental state). For example,
physical reaction like ‘strenuous expression on the face’ is a sure physical
reaction which is a manifestation of a definite ‘cause’ or Vibhava.
Therefore, the physical
reaction of strenuous expression on the face will be the ‘Anubhava’.
Nevertheless, since such a reaction could be the result of either a body ache
or mental stress or for being thrown in to an awkward condition. As mentioned
earlier, the vibhava is definitive because it is the internal state, which
triggers the anubhava, which is the external manifestation.
Natya Shastra considers that art has no
boundaries or any limits.
There are other bhavas
( dance expressions) in the human mind.
1. Bibhava:
The cause of any Sthayi
Bhava which enter into the composition of any poem or drama, are called Bibhava
(elements). Bibhava is of two kinds, viz., Alamvana and Uddipana.
- Alamvana Bibhava:
That which is essential
to the awakening of Sthayi Bhava is called Alamvana Bibhava.
- Uddipana Bibhava:
That which excites a
Rasa is called the Uddipana Bibhava. Uddipana Bibhava constitutes the attempts
of the character concerned, and his experience of a feeling of similarity as to
time and place.
2. Anubhava:
Anubhavas are resulting
or intentional actions. Anubhava is the expression by means of part of any
Sthayi or Sanchari Bhava. Anubhavas and Mudras are the signs of Bhavas in a
dance. They are the languages by means of which the idea of a dance is
narrated. Its particular Anubhava can express every Bhava.
3. Sattwika Bhava:
The mental condition
arising from the Sattwika Guna is called Sattwika Bhava. Still it sometimes
assumes different shapes due to Anubhava. Stambha, Sweda, Romancha,
Swarabhanga, Bepathu. Vaibarnya, Asru and Pralaya make up the Sattwika Bhava. A
Sattwika Bhava cannot be itself an unintentional emotional condition unless it
is influenced by Anubhava.
There are 3 feminine
bhava dance expressions: -
1. Shariraj or which
keeps connection with the Sharira or body.
2. Ayatnaj or which
springs from itself or spontaneous.
3. Swabhava or which
arises from ones nature.
Shariraj :--
They are classified
into three---
- Hava
- Bhava
- Hela
- Hava:
When the eyes and
eyebrows are changed as a result of Bhava (mentioned below) in a mans mind, it
is called Hava.
- Bhava:
It is the first
passionate yearning in a human mind by Raja and Tama Gunas. There is no outward
expression of this Bhava but it does its work inwardly.
- Hela:
It exists when there is
a linking of Shringara with Hava.These three seem to be of vulgar type
Ayatnaj :----
There are seven such
Bhavas.
1. Shobha: When the
limbs are influenced softly by the desire of Saundarya, Vasua, Tarunya and
Priya-Milan, it is Shobha.
2. Kanti: When the
Shobha Bhava is exclusively covered by passion, it is called Kanti.
3. Madhurya: Not to be
greatly influenced by Bhava is Madhurya.
4. Dwipti: The
spreading or Vistara of Kanti Bhava is Dwipti.
5. Pragalvya: When
astonishment is not seen.
6. Audarya: To keep
Prashraya always intact in every condition is Audarya.
7. Dhairya: The Bhava
of patience is Dhairya.
Leela Swabhavika:
There are ten
Swabhavika Bhavas.
1. Leela: To imitate
the lover by voice and physical care. The famous example of Leela can be from
Ras Leela. In that, Radha imitates Lord Krishna and taking his flute dances the
dance of Krishna.
2. Vilasa: The sudden
and beautiful change in the expressions of the body and voice as a result of
meeting with the loved ones is called Vilasa.
3. Vichchitti: When
there is a great change by dress and Kanti is influenced thereby, it is called
Vichchitti.
4. Vibhrama: To wear a
garment of a particular portion of the body on a different part of body in
haste.
5. Kilinkichita: To depict
Krodha, Asru and Harsha together is Kilinkichita.
6. Mottayita: To be
merged in the Bhava of the beloved when his name or something pertaining to him
is mentioned.
7. Kuttamita: To show
false anger when the lover has come.
8. Bibboka: To behave badly
with the lover even when Abhimana does not exist.
9. Lalita: To arrange
the limbs and their movements gracefully.
10. Vihrita: The Bhava
of silence due to constraint even after meeting with the lover.
Natya Sastra gives information about; the Samgraha (collection)
of everything like Rasas, Bhavas, Abhinaya (gesticulatory representation)
Dharmi (Rehearsed practice), Vrtti (Style), Pravrtti, (Action), Siddhi
(Achievement), Svaras (notes), Atodya (instrumental music), Gana (song), and
Ranga (the stage), etc.
Thus, the Natya Sastra is not only conceptually
different but has also its unique definition of the theatreIn the modern world,
all the concepts have gone to its minutest details i.e. from mini to micro
levels.
However, the Natya
Sastra is a torch light concept, which means that practically whatever required
to do a good theatre is covered under the Natya Sastra. Literature, acting,
dance, song, music, production and the theatre and stage are covered under this
Sastra.
Unique features of the
Natya Sastra are Dharmi (Rehearsed practice), Vrtti (Style), Pravrtti,
(Action), Siddhi (Achievement). Thus, it suggests that not merely external
requirements but internal needs and intangible assets in this form too are
required for theatre.

representation) Dharmi (Rehearsed practive), Vrtti (Style), Pravrtti, (Action),
Siddhi (Achievement), Svaras (notes), Atodya (instrumental music), Gana (song),
and Ranga (the stage)
The Natya Sastra
defines the character and the corresponding requirement for the level of
performance, the types of the characters, the different kind of people in the
society and their strata and required understanding to develop and achieve it
for a performance.
It shows the path and
explains about the content of theatre - Rasas, Bhavas, Abhinaya (gesticulatory
representation), Dharmi (Rehearsed practice), Vrtti (Style), Pravrtti,
(Action), Siddhi (Achievement), Svaras (notes), Atodya (instrumental music),
Gana (song), and Ranga (the stage)

Shastra ‘Natya Bavanu kirtanam’. In simple words, theatre is all about
emotions
Actors should be aware
of body, voice, make-up, props and the gesture and postures of acting to enable
them express various temperaments.
There are four types of Abhinaya, namely, (1) Angika,
(2) Vacika, (3) Aharya and (4) Sattvika.
Angika — pertaining to
the body and its limbs … This involves the whole body of the actor and included
an elaborate scheme of facial expression, mime, and gestures, accompanied by
their appropriate movements, poses and attitudes. Hand gestures are another
integral part of Angika since the interpretation of the text is mainly conveyed
through this. The holistic communication of the story is through the gestures,
facial expressions and body movements, the Angikabhinaya.
Vachika — relating to
the vocal including proper pronunciation, modulation of voice accents and
percussion… One of the distinguishing characteristics of Kathakali is that the
actors do not speak. Vachika (drama text in the form of verses and songs) are
recited and sung by vocalists. These songs are explained and interpreted in
details by actors through an elaborate method of angikabhinaya, which consists
of highly codified gestures, facial expression, and body movements.
Satvika —
representation of psychic condition … A highly stylized technique in the
invocation of bhava has been developed in Kathakali. This is called Rasabhinava.
Ahraya — costume, make-up, embellishments , ornaments , stage props etc
Vrttis – The Vrttis
(Styles) are of four kinds (1) Bharati (Pertaining to the goddness of speech
(verbal)], (2) Sattvati (The Grand one), (3) Kaisiki (the graceful one) and (4)
the Arabhati (the energetic or impetuous one).

The Abhinaya Darpan (a
descriptive primmer for dancers) mentions that the dancer should sing the song
by the throat, express the meaning of the song through hand gestures, show the
state of feelings in the song by eyes, and express the rhythm with his or her
feet.

a text on the arts, this beautiful quotation and translation is often quoted by
Indian classical dance instructors:
"Yato hastastato
drishtihi"..."Where the hand is, the eyes follow"
"Yato drishtistato
manaha"..."Where the eyes go, the mind follows"
"Yato manastato
bhavaha"..."Where the mind is, there is the feeling" Where the
mind goes, the mood (bhava) follows,
"Yato bhavastato
rasaha"..."Where there is feeling, there is mood/flavour, sweetness
(i.e.,appreciation of art; aesthetic bliss)" Where the mood goes, there
arises the sentiment
So vast are the
subtleties expressed in the hand gestures of hasta that the vastness of what
being human entails, and perhaps even what the entire universe contains, might
be expressed by the dancer
Hasta form a distinct
coded language which brings a unique poetic element while performing, so too
when abhinaya (traditional facial expressions), pose (attitude), and rhythm
complete the language, the dancer may express practically anything and
everything to an attentive audience.
In appropriate ways,
Kathakali makes use of the Navarasas (nine moods) and their respective
Sthayibhavas (permanent states of mind) together with the Sancharibhava
(transitory moods).
The actors' faces
reflect their feelings distinctly, as does a mirror. This produces similar
feelings and emotions in the mind of the spectators.
There are Thirty-three
such Bhavas, dance expressions, as enumerated in the Shastras: ---
1.Nirveda (hates own
self), 2. GIani (from tiresomeness), 3. Shanka, 4. Shrama 5. Dhrity (Santosh),
6.Jarata (which arises on hearing any bad message of a beloved), 7.Harsha,
8.Dainya, 9.Ougrya, 10.Chinta, 11. Trasa, 12. Asuya or Irsha (arising from
somebodys wealth), 13. Amarsha, 14. Garva, 15. Smriti, 16. Marana, 17. Mada,
18. Supta (a particular situation at the time of lying down),19. Nidra, 20.
Vivodha (to be awakened or to awake), 21. Vrira (Lajja, bashfulness), 22.
Apasmar (lunaticism), 23. Moha, 24.Mati (the knowledge of things at their
proper places), 25. Alasya, 26. Avega, 27.Tarka, 28. Avahitta, 29. Vyadhi, 30.
Unmada,31.Vishada, 32. Autsukya, 33. Chapalya
Eight rasas and
associated bhavas are named and their enjoyment is likened to savoring a meal:
rasa is the enjoyment of flavors that arise from the proper preparation of
ingredients and the quality of ingredients.
One ingredient in a
juice (incidentally also called Rasa in Sanskrit) is not relish-able. However,
by putting in herbs, spices and other ingredients, processing, blending,
camouflaging and properly preparing it, the juice can be made worthy of
pleasing and relishing. Thus all this
process put together becomes the term ‘Rasa’.

Food has six kinds of Rasa or taste which food has --but
which all tastes cannot be found in one place or item, for these tastes are
variously distributed throughout space. Food, in this context, means matter or
objects or thoughts, which are all produced effects, effects that are produced
owing to various causes.
The Rasas are the unique qualities which bring about
variety in things created whose source is one and one only
The rule that the old
masters of the Kathakali teach their pupils says: where their hands are to
represent an action, there must be the eyes; Where the eyes go, there must
follow the intellect, and the action represented by the hands must give rise to
a definite feeling which is reflected on the face of the actor .
From this rule it
follows that the face is an emotional mirror whose reactions are conditioned
not by the actions of another actor, but by the story described by the hands of
the actor himself.
There is a a double structure in the acting of the
actor; The latter must, more or less simultaneously, engage different
psycho-physical and technical means to represent two complementary aspects of a
history, the purely "narrative" aspect (the hands) communicating what
has just happened in a particular episode, and the emotional aspect (the face)
constituting the subjective reactions of the personage to the situation in
which it is located.
The head is the
character and that the body is the phenomenological world.
Check out the dance of
Shiva Nataraja. The whole body of God is the world with its dialectical cosmic
process of creation and destruction (the legs create and the hands destroy),
while the face reveals the personal attitude of the Godhead in its expression
of serenity and bliss.
Mudras , gestures with well-designed meaning composed by
hands and fingers, are veritable visual ideograms that replace speech.
There 24 fundamental mudras
which, in Kathakali , according to the various possible combinations of them, and
in relation to the movements of the body
and the mimicry of the face, can express more than three thousand words .. Each word in the piece
is expressed by a mudra , even grammatical themes such as "if",
"when", "but".
The Kathakali actor
gives free rein to his fantasy and his imagination. Suppose he describes a woman. After
composing the mudra corresponding to this word, he begins to elaborate the
"beauty" of the woman by introducing attributes or metaphors such as
"beautiful as the lotus", "tender as a rose petal",
"with eyebrows Like waves ".
The Kathakali actor is graded by his own imaginative faculty and this
talent for improvisation - manodharma -
indispensable qualities for an actor.
It is NOT right to say that Kathakali is a rigid science.
In reality, the actor is a sculptor whose
body is simultaneously chisel and block of marble. It takes some intelligence
to understand this. A mountain is not simply a gesture. Its altitude can be read in the eyes of the Kathakali actor, in his gaze, while we see the body climb this mountain, the body which is simultaneously mountain and mountaineer.
This dialectic of the
game allows the viewer to judge the exterior as interior, to be introduced into
the internal mechanism and to apprehend it as a totality. In his
game, the actor arrives at a continual superposition between the subject and
the object, between the world of subjective emotions and the phenomenological
world, between action and reaction. Till today no white man has really understood Kathakali at a deep level.
Mudras are not only a
visual ideogram of descriptive value, but constitute a process of emotional
plastic representation that engages the actor's body in the empty space he
fills with his presence and dynamics.
The expression of each word of the play by a mudra can be regarded as the cause of the long duration of a Kathakali show. A play, which takes only twenty minutes, presented in this way on the stage, can last more than four consecutive hours with the audience transfixed.

Of properties, the Kathakali stage can become a palace or
forest at a moment’s notice. The actor’s physicalisation of dramatic action and
of the rich poetic images of the text , supplemented by his dancing of set pieces
of choreography provoke the audience’s imaginative engagement in the creation
of the ‘world’ of the play Kathakali dance ranges from the very strong and
vigorous (tandava) to the soft or languid (lasya)..
For abhinaya, there are
four separate and fully developed styles are adopted. They are Aharya
(costumes), Vachika (literary text), Angika (gestrual) and Satvika (emotional).
The white man used to
watching his own SHALLOW mindless theatre will wonder how people in Kerala sit from dawn
to dusk watching Kathakali.
It is because we have a completely different
approach to theater. We judge the skill and virtuosity of the actor. Each
gesture, movement and expression of the actor is valued and evaluated by a
public of connoisseurs who does not hesitate to show loudly his appreciation or
his spite.
A pretender Kathakali dancer will not last more than a single show . This is why the
training is long ( minimum 4 years with just meal breaks and 8 hours sleep ) and
rigid.
According to the Natya
shastra, the goals of theatre is to empower aesthetic experience, deliver
emotional rasa. Entertainment is an effect, but not the primary goal of Kathakali.
The primary goal is to create rasa so as to lift and transport the spectators,
unto the expression of ultimate reality and transcendent values.
The success of a
performance art is measured not by the reviews, awards or recognition the
production receives, but only when it is performed with skilled precision,
devoted faith and pure concentration such that the artist gets the audience
emotionally absorbed into the art and immerses the spectator with pure joy of
rasa experience
Rasa is the invisible
substance that gives life meaning. Rasa is
also described as the state of ecstasy
in the union with divine . According to
Natya shastra, a rasa is a synthetic phenomenon and the goal of any creative
performance art, oratory, painting or literature.
Rasa may be said to be the
original emotion transfigured by aesthetic delight, one way is through the use
of gestures and facial expressions of the actors. Expressing Rasa in classical
Indian dance form is referred to as Rasa-abhinaya.
Rasa, the dominant emotion,
aroused by a Kathakali recital , is
tasted by the audience, --it has a different quality from that which is
aroused in real life. Rasas are created by bhavas. Rasa is about what the mind
feels and the expression of the feeling thereafter.
While mudras form the
alphabet, a movement (chulippu) accompanies each mudra to constitute the
grammar to which navarasa is added. Sringara is considered as the king of
rasas. There are sambhoga sringara and vipralambha sringara. Sambhoga sringara
is the love in union and viprlambha sringara as the love in seperation.
Hasya
is not laughter but humour created using either a situation or a mode of
behaviour. The bhava of divine peacefulness is shanta. Natyasastra does not
consider shanta as a rasa
There are usually
different facial expressions like thadam ilakkal, purikam ilakkal, kannu
sadhakam, netti ilakkal, kazhuthilakkal etc. Thadam ilakkal is the movement of
lower part of the eyes. It is moved to show anger or sudden movements.
Purikam
ilakkal means the movement of eyebrows. For showing rasa the movement of eye
brows is important. Kannu sadhakam is the practice of moving eyes to all
directions. Netti ilakkal is also an expression to show surprise or wonder. The
facial expressions are the locution of narratives. It is through this the
narrative is conveyed to the audience.
In Kathakali, narration
advances through various techniques to catch the span of attention of audience.
Here the non-literary elements are communicated through various techniques
apart from the linguistic richness. The stories are not narrated directly.
There is a need of making it strange to attract the audience.
There are 2 kinds
of narration – Primary and Embedded. Primary narrative comes first and embedded
is the hidden one. A visual performance makes use of both the narratives in
which the story comes as primary narrative whereas the techniques form an
embedded narrative.
Usually the sloka will
be Sanskrit and the padam which follows this will be in manipravalam which is
the combination of Sanskrit and Malayalam. The use of space is an impetus to
the actor. He changes the place by revolving on the stage. Adidikkida is used
to show the journey of the character. The technique of creating something from
nothing is also a theatrical technique.
The nature of a
character plays a major role in spinning a story around it. The gradual
development of emotions replaced the importance of plot in the repertoire.
There is a traditional concept of narration
in which the binary opposites play a relevant role in shaping a story-- the
events travel from the present to past and then again to the present. Equilibrium – disequilibrium – equilibrium
There is a conscious
effort on the part of the creators of the Kathakali to avoid any form of
expression that traces or imitates the reality of everyday life. The make-up blurs the individual physiognomy
of the actor to transform it into a supernatural face, into a suggestive mask.
The costumes completely break the organic harmony of the body and the new
silhouette that emerges strikes us by its architectonic and extraordinary
proportions.
The play, mudras as
well as mimic of the face, uses a language where the reality is not illustrated
passively, but recreated by original artistic means. The process distorts the
actor's dynamic, without hindering it.
The actor always has his legs bent,
knees apart, and he leans on the outer edges of the feet, an extremely fatiguing
and painful position, the mastery of which is acquired only after a long
training.
The actor follows his
hands with his eyes all the time, he looks at them as if his hands become the
object or the person they want to present.
The extreme mobility of the hands
and fingers touches us with an expressiveness that goes beyond all imagination.
It is especially the rapidity of these members and their compositions that
fascinate, strange alphabet of deaf mutes.
They are the matrix of epic
materials that the actor represents and develops through its dynamics. The
movements of the various parts of the body are often based on a
desynchronization, on a clear divorce of the rhythm between the different
limbs.
The legs can move at an extraordinary speed while the hands sculpt the
mudras with a slow and calculated precision. Or, facial expression can be
lively and bodily actions impregnated with an austere and serene gravity. Kathakali
does NOT use women.
Men play the
role. There is too much hardship while
training for several years in the preteen years and women cannot survive this
rigor. The approach, the mimicry, the
gesticulation and the slightest movements of these actors reveal a deep
knowledge of the psychology and the behavior of the woman.
There is nothing
vulgar or equivocal, no concession to what might flatter the taste of a popular
public. Playing such a role requires a skill that is a real test bed for the classical
actor.
The style of singing
particular to Kathakali is called Sopana sangeetham (Sopana Music). Of the two
singers, the first singer (pinnani) keeps the steady beat of the thala
(rhythmic pattern) by using the chengila (gongs), made of bell metal.
Music as
a vachika element in Kathakali is designed entirely to enable and enhance
characterisation, and not primarily for expressing classical virtuosity. Also
the singer has to keep his eyes riveted on the actor for every little body
movement has to synchronise with the gong beat.
So adept are experienced
singers that every nuance of a moving facial muscle is anticipated and
synchronised with the gong rhythm. The training of a singer for Kathakali is in
conjunction with a performing actor..
The singer has to control the
performance, its tempo and also the percussionists by his acute sense of
timing. The raga used is entirely governed by the mood and character. Kathakali
music follows the mood-- if the mood demands a certain raga, its following soon
after another raga very close to it, is no restricting factor.
Kathakali
experts price the singer more for his conducting ability than for his melodious
rendition.. Apart from the slow singing which is very difficult to master, the
fluidity takes years to acquire. Unlike classical musicians, a Kathakali
musician goes from raga to raga with no pause.
The drums like the Chenda, a
most versatile instrument which can bring out any tonal quality in the world
and the maddalam as percussion (particularly important in the cholliattam
improvised segments) add the final dimension to the drama in Kathakali.
Music
is central to a Kathakali performance. It sets the mood and triggers emotions
resonant with the nature of the scene. It also the beat speed with which the
actors play their parts.
Attom (dance) is the
technical term for performance, while the verbal text is known as Attakkatha
(dance-story) which is a visual, auditive and contemplative
(drisya-sravya-manana) poetry. The performance text is composed as a mixture of
narrative portion (in quatrains called sloka) and dialogue sequences (pada).
The sloka which is conventionally written in Sanskrit is a narrative bridge in
between two scenes or sometimes it precedes the scene or acting. The “spoken”
passages called padams, either in monologue or dialogue form are lyrics set to
dance and music.
All the sequences of a
Kathakali play is composed into a form called attaprakaram (performance manual)
which gives the complete text of a Kathakali play .Actually a Kathakali
performance takes place solely on the basis of this text.
As soon as he suddenly
"unveils the audience “, the actor gives an impression of artificiality
due to his make-up, his costume, his play and his gait.
The appearance of the
actor in front of the audience is preceded by a complex convention of ritual
value: the Tiranokku or the curtain.
The actor's entry on
the stage is hidden by a large colored sheet that two young boys hold at the
center of the stage. Hidden behind this curtain, we feel, or rather we hear the
presence of the actor by cries, screams, vocalizations that are no longer communicative
language, logical, but magic constraint.
This communicates to the public the
supernatural power of the character, and allows the actor to penetrate into the
"sonorous universe", in the breathing ( prana ) of the person he
embodies.
From time to time, the
two young boys lower the curtain by half a meter and the bewitching face of the
actor reveals itself for a few seconds to the public. All the time one can
observe under the curtain the feet of the actor who, on the spot, performs a
dance at a frantic pace.
This ceremonial complex
lasts about twenty minutes, then, with a sudden and decided gesture, the
curtain is lowered and the actor is revealed to us in all the majesty of his
apparatus, ready to incarnate the story.
During the game, the
actor's mouth is always closed. He breathes through the nose, except in
situations where he must use the language or scream aloud. But a situation like
this, when the rule of immobility of the mouth is suddenly broken, only
reinforces the impression of anomalous and inhuman in the face of the actor.
Often the gaze is
fixed, like that of statues; And the lively gesticulation, as well as the
almost acrobatic movements, contrast violently with these enormous static eyes,
frozen as in the contemplation of the void.
Sometimes the eyelids
are widened and the irises disappear in a corner of the eye, immobile during a
long period of dynamic play where the head moves continuously and where the
face is constantly changing.

Spreading the eyelids
with the fingers allows a major dilation of the eye and activates the muscles
of the eyelids.
At the end of this
training, they are able to give the eyes extraordinary expressiveness and
capacity for dilation.
This facial gymnastics
makes it possible to reach the control of each muscle of the face, thus to go
beyond the mimic stereotypes.
It is very important
here to have different facial muscles move in different rhythms simultaneously,
the movements of which are not synchronized in life.
For example, very
quickly shake the eyebrows and very slowly the muscles of the cheekbones. Or,
engage in a fast rhythm the left part of the face, while the right part comes
alive with very slow movements.
1. Raising of the lower
eyelids, without moving the upper eyelids.
2. Lifting a single
eyebrow.
3. Trembling of both
eyebrows, eyes normally open.
4. Trembling eyebrows,
eyes wide open.
5. Trembling of the
eyebrows, the lower eyelids raised.
6. Trembling of the
eyebrows while the head accomplishes movements.
7. Trembling of the
eyebrows, combined with various expressions of the face (disgust, contempt,
hate, joy, etc ...).
8. Trembling of the
eyebrows, while the face expresses a feeling and that the head accomplishes
movements.
9. Trembling of the eyebrows
accompanied by a tremor of the shoulders. These two tremors must not be
synchronized.
10. Tremor of the
eyebrows and horizontal displacement of the iris from left to right and vice
versa. The displacement of the iris is at first very slow, then very fast.
Avoid synchronization of eyebrow shake and iris movement.
11. Trembling of the
eyebrows accompanied by vertical displacement of the iris from top to bottom
and vice versa. Avoid synchronization.
12. Trembling muscles
of the cheekbones without moving eyes and mouth.
13. Trembling of the
muscles of the corners of the mouth faster and faster.
14. Trembling of the
muscles of the chin without moving the corners of the mouth without tightening
the teeth and without engaging the muscles of the anterior part of the neck.
15. Tremor of the
nostrils.
16. Vibrations of the
eyelashes.

Originally Kathakali
plays were performed all night, but have changed into three hour cameos like
what my wife saw . Also characters have
been added to reflect everyday life than “most roles in the repertory” than
were originally from the epic and puranic sources.

Kathakali creates a
world of illusion unmatched by any other form of theater on this planet. With

transformational theatrics, Kathakali dominates the theatre.

process of practice and training, an actor gains full control of the facial muscles, which
enables him to express the emotions. Through an internal discipline an actor
develops his ability in mastering this action technique.
Kathakali dancers submits to a rigorous and relentless training
discipline – from the tender age of 12.
The child enters the theatrical
world which borders on the religious universe.
His psyche and character in training, are receptive to all the stimuli
of the new environment: the austere discipline of work , total surrender and
absolute respect for his guru who initiated this work.
He knows there is NOT
much money and a world of pain in the life time vocation he has chosen . It
takes eight years to be considered worthy to just be on stage as a small part
actor.
At the Kathakali training
institute they live together, in small houses, each arranged for four
people. No beds, no wardrobes, no other
furniture. Mats on which they lie, a
suitcase containing the personal effects, on the walls of images of gurus
(masters) and gods; Here is the austere
and modest interior of their dwellings.
They all eat together
in a refectory, they work every day, with the exception of Sunday, from four in
the morning to nine in the evening. They have two months of vacation per year.
Studies are at their own expense except where the family is too poor, the
institute welcomes them free of charge.
Studies last eight
years. Young people are divided into two
groups: novices during the first four years, then veterans. A series of basic
exercises (dynamic legs, eye and face exercises) are performed daily by both
groups.
Gurus direct the
courses. The discipline is very severe.
At four o'clock in the morning, the pupils rise and pass through huts
where, in the light of oil lamps, they begin their exercises. There is no guru
, but silence and discipline reign absolutely.
Their first exercises are
gymnastics and acrobatics, conducted according to a rhythm that the young ones
impose themselves by pronouncing phrases without meaning, with a well defined
rhythmic value.
It is now six o'clock
in the morning. Students will bathe in a nearby river or temple pond. At
six-thirty they breakfast , and by 07-45 they star work.
Until half past twelve,
under the direction of their respective gurus , they repeat without
interruption fragments or complete scenes of a drama. At the end of his
studies, an actor Kathakali knows perfectly the partition of the signs, mimics,
leaps, mudras of all the characters (men and women, main roles and secondary
roles) of about sixty pieces. These five hours of work are devoted to the
assimilation of these scores.
At half-past twelve,
they interrupt their training and go to lunch. Until three o'clock the pupils
are free for a cat nap. From three
o'clock till five o'clock, they take theoretical courses: history of the
Kathakali theater, biographies of gurus , religion, Malayalam,, Sanskrit, geography and history.
From five to
six-and-a-half, sitting in padmasana (crossed legs), the students exercise
their eyes and face. After half an hour of rest, at seven o'clock, they sing
for half an hour religious hymns, the final of which is the praise of a great
guru Kathakali.
From seven-thirty to
eight-thirty they practice on the mudras . They repeat the mudras that the guru
shows them and which constitute the partition of the scenes that they will play
the next day. They repeat this partition of seated mudras , that is to say by
engaging only the upper part of the body, including the face. After which they
dinner and at nine they go to bed.
The novices attend to
the make-up and the clothing of their older comrades by helping them: they
spray and mix the colors, prepare the different parts of the costume. In
general, these performances are given on Saturday, because they last all night.
Thus, on Sunday, students can rest.
Heavy foot massage (
Chavitti Uzhicchil ) is administered by the guru during the monsoon season which, in Kerala,
takes place between May and August. The entire body is anointed with a mixture
of sesame oil, coconut and ghee..
This massage is painful and last about half
an hour. Through this painful physical operation the young actor organically
acquires the basic position of his play: the parallel feet, half a meter apart,
rest on the edges, the toes are contracted towards the plant, the knees spaced
apart .
The student stretches,
his face and chest touching the ground. The thighs are pushed out and the knees
rest on pieces of wood (palaka ) about fifteen centimeters high.
The lower part of the legs is folded inwards and the feet touch. In this position, the lower part and the upper part of the body touch the ground, while the kidneys are raised by the wood under the knees.

The guru , standing at
a beam parallel to the ground at the level of his shoulders, begins to gently
massage with the plant and toes of the right foot, the body of the pupil
stretched out. In proportion as it masses, it compresses the loins, pressing
them towards the earth.

abdomen touching the ground while the knees are always resting on the woods,
the kneecap is deformed.

The calves are stiffened because they support
the weight of the whole body, so the feet whose toes are contracted inwards.
The muscles of the thighs and loins are relaxed. The back muscles are stiffened
because of the very straight position.
Similarly the muscles of the neck, due
to the pressure of the chin on the neck. Finally the muscles of the arms are
half stiffened, while the hands are quite relaxed. This is the correct and
functional muscular commitment of the actor in his basic position.
Complex posture or
distortion of the body would cause the total involvement of all the muscles in
a layman, which would quickly tire him and subject him to a hard physical
effort, not to mention the lack of plastic expressivity and dynamic efficiency
.
The actor Kathakali, by perfectly and consciously controlling each muscle of
his body, easily engages the muscles strictly necessary and keeps a muscular
economy as soon as the action requires hops, or complex physical actions.
The body is subjected
to a rigorous, even painful discipline, which transforms it into an adequate
medium of thoughts, ideas, feelings, emotions.
It is this perfect control of
the body, that consciousness of the anatomical structure which, with the mental
concentration required to bring to life extra-human actions and reactions, the

Absolute control of
each muscle of the face, the slightest movement of the eyes, agility of the
legs and the rest of the body is attained, and finally, thanks to the acrobatic
gymnastics exercises, a physical condition that allows us to accomplish with
ease the physical effort required by the show.
The formation of the
actor Kathakali is acutely concerned with the expressive possibilities of the
body. The smallest part of this body is trained and put into a state to express
what words themselves can not communicate.
The eyes dilate and contract
according to the vegetal impulse of a lotus which flourishes, the irises roll
and dart when seeing the whirlwind of the enemies who advance in arms, the
eyelashes vibrate to make the flight of a bee , Nostrils pinch, chin,
cheekbones, lips tremble reflecting delicate and secret emotions.
The psychic processes,
the psychological intentions, the complexity of the motives of each action are
manifested by physical reactions which strike by their intuitive accuracy.
Three or four hours
before the show, which begins at nightfall, the actors gather to makeup. The
most absolute silence reigns; Large oil lamps create foci of light around which
the actors are united. Their sons or young chelas (disciples) reduce yellow,
red, green stones, amalgamate and prepare the colors and chutti , a white paste
made of rice powder and silt juice. All this work is directed by specialists in
makeup.
The first phase of
make-up is performed by the actor himself. Sitting in padmasana (legs crossed,
very straight trunk), he weaves on his face a whole net of lines of various
colors, equidistant of the nose, the eyes and the mouth. It does not use
brushes, but small rods.
Then he confides in the
hands of a specialist makeup artist. Stretched on the floor, the body
completely relaxed, breathing rhythmically and deeply, it concentrates on its
role, falling into a kind of torpor, favored by the heat of the afternoon.
In
this sleep there takes place a psychic process that, from private person,
transforms the actor into God or Demon, depending on the role to play. At the
end of this second phase, the makeup artist wakes him up. He gets up, his
gestures and his gait are already modified.
Another feature of
makeup is the reddening of the white of the eyes of certain characters (women
and gods) with seeds of Cunda Poov ( solanum pubescens ).
Before starting his
make-up, the actor gets his face massed with oil. The perspiration during the
show, which lasts all night, does not break down the makeup, instead gives it a
new luster.
This supernatural
character has two objectives: to strike the public, to facilitate the
personality loss of the actor. The stories dealt with by the Kathakali feature
an entire gallery of extraterrestrial and mythological characters. These are
true religious plays, mysteries. The situation, as well as the characters, no
longer belong to everyday reality.
The eyes are wide open
and the head turns while observing, as if the irises led the movements of the
head. Suddenly, with a sudden movement, the head stops and the irises are fixed
on an object which is not the "goal" decided .
The head remains in
its stationary position while the irises move (slowly or rapidly, according to
the intention) towards the "goal" fixed in advance and reach it. Then
only the head turns towards the "goal" and when it arrives on the
latter, the face assumes a particular expression (hatred, contempt, joy, etc
...).
Around the ankles,
therefore very visible, are attached bells that rhythm the slightest movement
of the legs. Long nails in silver deform the left hand. If they produce an
almost elegant effect during lively and graceful gesticulations, they acquire a
fierce character when used by demonic characters.
The actor knows how to
use his skirt to suggest the gait of a young girl or animals, the trembling of
the waves or a narrow path full of obstacles, to be convinced that the body is
not a prisoner of costume, and that the costume is only extension,
amplification, complement of body language.
The Kathakali, with its
scenic language which is a pure "semantic" corporeal, must satisfy
and strike the eyes so as to be able to touch the imagination and the
sensibility of the spectators. The ritual value of the show promotes the
psychological commitment of the spectators and the actors.
All these complex means
of expression of the actor Kathakali merge into a game that leads to its
dehumanization, if by human is meant the natural, habitual of everyday life. Styling, counterfeiting,
"artificiality", if you will, are the sieve by which the supernatural
reality of the play is gone.

The drums roll syncope
and rhythm his improvisation. He then brushes a whole series of descriptions,
adjectives, metaphors that constitute his own contribution to the drama.

minutes, after which the actor resumes the thread of the interrupted game.
Another trait, which
could also be considered as a distancing effect, is the attitude of the actor
at the end of a "solo".
While his colleague takes over and continues
the scenic action, the actor sits on the stool that is on the stage, he relaxes
and behaves as if he were in his cloakroom in full solitude: he Retouching her
make-up, fixing her crown more firmly, putting in order the numerous ornaments
that garnish her costume.
As soon as his presence
is required for the development of the action, he rises, a sudden metamorphosis
takes place before the eyes of the spectators, and again the actor regains the
supernatural "form" he had just left.

music is preponderant. This sound background that accompanies, syncopates and

to which are attached small mirrors in the form of bells that the actor
manipulates with ease during his game.

From a theatrical point
of view, one can notice,its colorful richness which, in the light of the only
oil lamp, can not fail to strike.
Kathakali engages several methods: direct
without special effects or curtain; through the audience, a method that engages
the audience, led by torch bearers since Kathakali is typically a night
performance; tease and suspense called nokku or tirassila or tiranokku, where
the character is slowly revealed by the use of a curtain.

At Bangkok International airport I had my Russian Chief engineer with me. We both were on VISA ON ARRIVAL to join a ship.
We saw several young Russian women tourists along with us- in the VISA ON ARRIVAL immigration section of the airport
One young attractive Russian woman was crying .
I asked my Russian Chief Engineer, what she is saying.
She was afraid – that she would be sent back.
My Chief Engineer told me all of them were WHORES.
One of them said , that there is never a problem . Maximum is that you may be taken to a side room where you may have to give one or two officers a BLOW JOB. They will NOT ask for bribe in cash .
Surprised ?

All this is normal.

ReplyDeleteA real-life incident happened with me, somebody was sick and went near death situation, there was a sea change in behavior for the last few weeks, humble, polite, forgiving etc.. say as if with very negligible ego, by Gods grace started recovering and was discharged from hospital.
Once gaining health the behavior changed and all those good qualities seen for fast few weeks disappeared.
Why this behavioral change happens when one was near death, why this behavior do not sustain permanently to anybody in all their time span of life.
Really what bring this change only at time when death is nearing?
How does the food and health conditions affect this behavior? I know Sattvic food and ego plays a big role in this ,but the same food eaten when in good health is conditioning the behavior differently in sick and when healthy. So what really runs the show behind this behavior?

My wife is 27 weeks pregnant, during 5-6 weeks earlier she had Progesterone deficiency for which doctor prescribed Progesterone supplement and after reading your blog we took Taro root or Ghuinya or CHEMBU and after 12 weeks that problem gone.
However in last two weeks i.e. 25 weeks onwards my wife has itchiness all over her body and doctor is suspecting Intrahepatic Cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) , as per doctor
baby must be delivered in 37 weeks (instead of 39 weeks or more naturally ) as the baby could be at risk.
As per some internet sites "Every year, one in every 140 pregnant women develop ICP - a build-up of bile in the body due to decreased liver function – and the key symptoms to look out for are extreme itching, which is typically worse in your hands and feet."
We are trying to eat organic vegetables and fruits as much as possible. Do you have any words for us on this.

Delete,What we observed is whenever she doesn't have proper food (lunch or dinner or both, like yesterday she had severe itching in the middle of night for 2-3 hours and she didn't have good lunch and she skipped dinner altogether yesterday as she wasn't feeling hungry at all) or whenever her tummy is not clean in the morning ritual this problem increases.
Doctor has done Bile Acid test and test result awaited. As per doctor baby has to be delivered early if test outcome is positive.
