Electrolytes serve three general functions in the body:

many are essential minerals
they control osmosis of water between body compartments
they help maintain the acid-base balance required for normal cellular activities
The electrolyte composition of sweat is variable but comprises of the following components:

Sodium
Potassium
Calcium
Magnesium
Chloride
Bicarbonate
Phosphate
Sulphate


A litre of sweat typically contains 0.02g Calcium, 0.05g Magnesium, 1.15g Sodium, 0.23g Potassium and 1.48g Chloride. This composition will vary from person to person. 

In blood plasma the particles will comprise of sodium, proteins and glucose


At the physiological level, running a marathon requires an aerobic base, strong muscles, and an abundance of glycogen.  

During a marathon run of 42 kms , metabolic rates drastically change, which requires the endocrine, respiratory and neuromuscular systems to perform at elevated levels for longer-than-average amounts of time.


The principal cation inside the cell is Potassium and the principal cation outside the cell is Sodium. A fluid imbalance between these two compartments is caused by a change in the Potassium or Sodium concentration. 

Sodium balance in the body is controlled by aldosterone and antidiuretic hormone (ADH).    ADH regulates extracellular fluid electrolyte concentration by adjusting the amount of water reabsorbed into the blood by the kidneys.   Aldosterone regulates extracellular fluid volume by adjusting the amount of sodium reabsorbed by the blood from the kidneys.

Running a marathon in hot eather resuts in a decrease in the sodium concentration in interstitial fluid. During sweating the skin excretes sodium as well as water.  If we replace the lost fluid with just plain water then we may produce a sodium deficit.  

The decrease in sodium concentration in the interstitial fluid lowers the interstitial fluid osmotic pressure and establishes an effective water concentration between the interstitial fluid and the intracellular fluid.  Water moves from the interstitial fluid into the cells, producing  results that can be quite serious

Whenever your blood sodium levels go low after drinking a tall glass of water, a hormone called “anti-diuretic hormone” (ADH) becomes suppressed and you produce a very dilute urine bringing your sodium levels back to normal.

Vasopressin, also known as antidiuretic hormone (ADH), is a neurohypophysial hormone which retain water in the body and  constrict blood vessels

Vasopressin promotes renal water reabsorption decreasing excretion of free water to dilute plasma and lower serum osmolality.

Vasopressin plays a key role in maintaining osmolality (the concentration of dissolved particles, such as salts and glucose, in the serum) and therefore in maintaining the volume of water in the extracellular fluid (the fluid space that surrounds cells).

This is necessary to protect cells from sudden increases or decreases in water content, which are capable of interfering with proper cell function.

In the kidneys, vasopressin acts on the cells of the collecting ducts. These cells contain receptors for vasopressin that are linked to vesicles that contain special water channels (aquaporins). When the cells are stimulated by vasopressin, the aquaporins fuse with the region of the cell membrane that is exposed to urine, allowing water to enter the cells.

The water is then returned to the circulation. This causes the volume of urine to decrease and the urinary content of sodium, chloride, and other substances to increase. When this occurs, the urine is said to be concentrated.

Vasopressin is also released in response to a decrease in blood volume. Special pressure sensors called baroreceptors can detect arterial blood pressure; they are located in the carotid sinus, which is intimately associated with each carotid artery high in the neck, and in a group of specialized cells in the left atrium of the heart.

When blood volume increases, the tissues of the carotid sinus and left atrium are stretched, and the nerves in the baroreceptors are stimulated. These nerves carry impulses to the vasopressin-producing nerve cells that inhibit the secretion of vasopressin, resulting in increased water excretion.

Conversely, if blood volume decreases, the stretch of the carotid sinus and left atrium decreases, vasopressin release increases, and water excretion decreases, thereby helping to restore blood volume to normal.

European guidelines classify hyponatremia in adults according to serum sodium concentration, as follows--

Mild: 130-134 mmol/L
Moderate: 125-129 mmol/L
Profound: <125 mmol="" o:p="">

Hypovolemic hyponatremia: decrease in total body water with greater decrease in total body sodium
Euvolemic hyponatremia: normal body sodium with increase in total body water
Hypervolemic hyponatremia: increase in total body sodium with greater increase in total body water

Hyponatremia can be further subclassified according to effective osmolality, as follows:--- 
Hypotonic hyponatremia
Isotonic hyponatremia
Hypertonic hyponatremia

Hypotonic hyponatremia accounts for most clinical cases of hyponatremia and can be treated with fluids.

Administer isotonic saline to patients who are hypovolemic to replace the contracted intravascular volume. Patients with hypovolemia secondary to diuretics may also need potassium repletion, which, like sodium, is osmotically active.

Treat patients who are hypervolemic with salt and fluid restriction, plus loop diuretics, and correction of the underlying condition.

For euvolemic, asymptomatic hyponatremic patients, free water restriction (< 1 L/day) is generally the treatment of choice.

No sexual predilection exists for hyponatremia. However, symptoms are more likely to occur in young women than in men.

Patients with hypertonic hyponatremia have normal total body sodium and a dilutional drop in the measured serum sodium due to the presence of osmotically active molecules in the serum, which causes a water shift from the intracellular compartment to the extracellular compartment.

Glucose produces a drop in the serum sodium level of 1.6 mEq/L for each 100 mg/dL of serum glucose greater than 100 mg/dL.

Two types of electrolytes, sodium and potassium, are involved in the control of fluid volume.

Body fluid is either inside cells, as intracellular fluid (ICF), or outside cells, as extracellular fluid (ECF), which includes blood plasma. The amount of sodium in the body determines the ECF volume, whereas potassium determines the ICF volume. 

Water crosses the membranes separating ICF from ECF, and its movement is influenced by the number of ions in each compartment – the osmolality. The less water in the blood, the greater the concentration of electrolytes and the greater the osmolality.

Humans sweat more than any other animal – rates can exceed 500g/m2 per hour – losing water and electrolytes, particularly sodium, in varying amounts. The concentration of sodium in sweat is always less than its concentration in the ECF, so sweating without drinking causes the concentration of sodium in the ECF to rise, triggering the thirst mechanism.

The low blood sodium concentration in EAH is caused by drinking too much fluid.

Taking on extra sodium before or during exercise will not prevent EAH developing in those who drink in excess of the dictates of thirst.

Consuming carbohydrate during marathon running improves performance.

Sports drinks allow two goals to be achieved: first, hydration; second, the delivery of carbohydrate.

Potassium levels are naturally high in vegetables and fruits, and sodium levels are naturally low
Sports drinks and gels are great at delivering carbohydrate and water. But there is no need to consume extra sodium during a marathon run.


The amount of water present in our bodies has to be regulated – it can’t veer towards extremes or else our health will suffer. 

Sodium ensures the correct water level is maintained at all times. It combines with potassium to form an electrical pump so that electrolyte balance isn’t disrupted both in and outside cells. It is also responsible for regulating blood volume and promoting muscle and nerve functions.

Kidneys are paired organs that are mainly responsible for maintaining the balance of fluids, as well as electrolytes such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, etc. Sodium plays a vital role in regulating the fluid balance. 

Water intoxication, which is medically referred to as dilutional hyponatremia, is a condition wherein the concentration of sodium in blood becomes low due to the consumption of excessive amounts of PURE water..

 When blood concentration of sodium falls below 135 millimoles per liter, the level of salt in our blood becomes low. Under such circumstances, water begins to seep into the cells. This process could lead to massive cellular damage. This has happened to OP Jaisha.  Her cough on TV newshour show was NOT swine flue.

The sensation of physiological thirst is stimulated by both a decrease in the amount of water in the blood (also called hypovolemia) and by increased plasma osmolality. Osmolality is the amount of dissolved particles, such as sodium or glucose, in the blood. Both hypovolemia and increased plasma osmolality occur during dehydration due to sweating.

An inorganic chemical does not have a carbon atom.   It is made of a combination of the remaining 118 atoms or elements.  These atoms are joined together by electrovalent bonds giving rise to simple and small number of compounds.  

An organic chemical must contain the carbon  atom  as a rule.  Carbon is combined with atoms of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, phosphorous etc .  

The carbon atoms are joined together by covalent bonds to form long chains or rings thus giving rise to a large number of complex compounds

Petroleum Hydrocarbon gases have upto 4 carbon atoms.  Liquids have 5 to 19 and gases have more  than 20 carbon atoms.

In the middle of the atom is the nucleus.  The nucleus contains protons (+) and neutrons. Revolving around the nucleus in elliptical orbits are  electrons.(-). 

The only reason all 118 atoms are different from each other is because the count of protons , neutrons and electrons are different. 

The number of electrons and protons of an atom are equal.  For example the carbon atom has 6 electrons and 6 protons. 

The number may be equal but the proton mass is 1832 times that of an electron. The atomic number of an element is the number of protons in the nucleus. Carbon’s atomic number is 6.

A molecule is a particle made out of 2 or more atoms.  An electrical bond  hold atoms together in a molecule

Hydrocarbon molecules have Carbon and Hydrogen atoms in various arrangements.

Protons have positive charge, electrons have negative charge of equal strength and neutrons have no charge at all.  Since the number of electrons and protons are the same the atom has no resultant charge and is neutral.

The protons and neutrons are held together very tightly in the nuclues. But the outer orbital electrons are held very loosely. They can jump from one atom to another. It is also possible to shift electrons from one atom to another.  

The atom which loses one electron has  one excess proton as a result in the tight nucleus and thus gets unbalanced. Such an atom is called a positive ion.

The atom which receives an excess electron is also unbalanced and is called a negative ion. 

Positive and negative ions are thus all the time trying to give up or receive an electron which they need. There is a mutual attraction between them like between a boy and a girl searching for a soulmate.  

When a postive and negative ion are kept apart there is static electricity. 

When they are brought close without touching the excess electrons from  a negative ion jumps across till both become neutral accompanied by light and sound --like lightning and thunder.

Total body water can be divided into two compartments – the intracellular space, which includes water inside muscle and brain cells, and the extracellular space, which includes fluid in the space between cells and the plasma. 

In a 70 kg person the amount of water inside the cells is about 28 L and the amount of water outside the cells is about 14 L. The balance of water inside and outside the cells is determined in part by sodium intake as well as other electrolytes such as potassium and chloride.


Sodium is the primary extracellular electrolyte. When sodium is consumed, it is distributed to the fluid outside of the cells, so sodium intake during exercise helps maintain blood sodium concentration. 

Sodium ingestion also helps retain fluid in the blood, which is important for maintaining or expanding plasma volume for rehydration and cardiovascular function.

The presence of sodium in a fluid replacement beverage is also important for whole-body fluid retention. For rehydration after exercise, the fluid consumed needs to stay in the body as opposed to loss through urination. 

When plain water is consumed, blood sodium concentration is diluted, turning off the signal to the kidney to reabsorb water and resulting in increased urine volume. 

By contrast, when a sodium-containing beverage is consumed, blood sodium concentration is increased, which in turn stimulates the reabsorption of water in the kidneys so that less urine is formed. In fact, fluid retention increases in direct proportion to beverage sodium concentration.


To achieve rapid and complete rehydration after exercise, athletes should consume a moderate to high-sodium beverage in a volume equivalent to 150% of fluid loss.  This extra fluid volume helps compensate for urine excreted during the rehydration process.

Overall it is important for an athlete to begin exercise in a hydrated state, drink enough fluid with sodium during exercise to maintain body weight within about 2%, and rehydrate after the run using fluid with sodium, in an amount slightly greater than body weight loss.


During a marathon run , athletes need to not only consider hydration needs but carbohydrate as well.
Consume a high-carbohydrate diet, drink plenty of fluid and ensure you consume plenty of calcium and magnesium-rich foods

Potassium and sodium are the electrolytes that help the cells to communicate to one another, through electrical signals. If these electrolytes are out of balance, the messages between cells lead to involuntary muscle contractions. In some cases, the athelete loses the consciousness. 

Although rich in potassium, coconut water is not a very good source of sodium for marathon runners which is mainly what we are losing in sweat. Drinking coconut water is good—but add some sodium by another drink or food.

Basically every time muscles move, or your heart beats it is electrical impulses that make this happen, each nerve impulse is dependent on an electrical charge, and a number of minerals in electrolyte form are vital for these functions to take place, these include Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium and Chloride

Electrolytes perform many essential functions,  working as a team.  While they don’t contain energy, they do activate electrical impulses.  Muscle contraction requires the presence of adequate sodium, potassium and calcium; and muscle weakness and cramping can result when these electrolytes are not available in sufficient quantities

Sodium and chloride are the most abundant, and daily profuse sweating can result in substantial loss of these minerals, which will require supplementation. The runner sweats lower amounts of potassium, calcium and magnesium. 

Muscles need sufficient electrolytes–sodium, magnesium, potassium and chloride—in proper balance to function properly. The body manipulates the balance of these minerals inside and outside of muscle cells in order to get the muscles to contract and relax. 

An imbalance or deficiency of these electrolytes can cause problems with the body’s electrical impulses and lead to muscle cramps and/or muscle spasms. Low levels of any of these minerals can allow the muscle to contract, but prevent it from relaxing.

Magnesium, is an essential mineral involved in muscle function that helps muscles to contract and relax.

Sodium (Na) is the predominant cation (positively charged element) found in extracellular fluid.

Sodium teams with potassium, the chief cation of intracellular fluid, to maintain proper body fluid and acid-base balance in the cells and tissue and maintain blood pressure. 

Potassium and other electrolytes—such as magnesium and chloride—perform numerous, multifaceted roles in the body. 

They work in concert with sodium to regulate acid-base, electrolyte, and water balance; conduct nerve impulses; promote normal muscle contraction (including the heartbeat); regulate the transfer of nutrients to cells; and maintain the normal function of the kidneys, heart, and nerve cells. 

An imbalance of any electrolyte can have far-reaching, serious effects within the body.

Their ionic nature gives the electrolytes the ability to carry electrical energy to keep the body’s systems functioning.

For a runner, keeping your electrolytes balanced is key for successful training and optimum performance. If your electrolytes are imbalanced, you could potentially compromise the success of your next run because of muscle fatigue or cramping.

Without sufficient potassium, your muscles cells can’t generate the necessary nerve impulses that control muscle contraction.

Cramping is the body’s way of letting you know the electrolyte tank is empty and it cannot continue; it’s like a car running out of gas.

If you are trying to rehydrate by drinking a lot of water, failing to consume electrolytes at the same time can upset the balance of electrolytes in your bloodstream.

When glycogen breaks down to supply energy for workouts, muscle cells are depleted of potassium. 

As a result, there is a greater concentration of potassium in blood and greater quantities are lost in the urine. Symptoms of potassium depletion include nausea, slower reflexes, irregular heartbeat, drowsiness, and muscle fatigue and weakness. 

Replenishing lost potassium after exercise is important, but hyperkalemia (high serum potassium levels) can cause electrical impulse disturbance, irregular heart beat, and possibly death.


Potassium is extremely important for the maintenance of water balance and distribution, acid-base balance, muscle and nerve cell function, heart function, kidney and adrenal function. In addition to functioning as an electrolyte, potassium is essential for conversion of blood sugar into glycogen, the storage form of blood sugar in the muscles and liver. 

A potassium shortage results in lower levels of stored glycogen. Because exercising muscles use glycogen for energy, a potassium deficiency produces great fatigue and muscle weakness, the first signs of potassium deficiency. 

The average athlete loses approximately 150 mg of Potassium in each liter of sweat .

Exceeding your aerobic capacity -- running too far or too hard ( like TINTU LUKA ) -- leads to anaerobic metabolism. This process causes increases in several substances that tire muscles and sabotage performance. Concentrations of hydrogen and potassium ions rise as do levels of inorganic phosphate and adenosine diphosphate, both of which break down ATP.   

As a result, ATP production falls and calcium release -- which is necessary for muscle contraction -- is inhibited. Lactic acid builds up as a byproduct of anaerobic respiration. Muscle strength declines and your overall speed slows.


Carbs are stored in your muscles as glycogen, which your body taps into during workout. To fuel your body and run, reach for complex carbs like whole fruits and vegetables, dairy, whole grain, potatoes, legumes. These foods provides host of nutrients, including fibers, vitamin c and calcium that will help runner perform their best.

Calcium is needed by many other cells to perform different functions in the body: contraction and relaxation of muscle, nerve conduction, secretion of hormones, enzymatic reactions, and blood coagulation.

Calcium plays a central role in both the synthesis and breakdown of muscle glycogen and liver glycogen. Blood calcium levels are tightly regulated by hormones at the expense of bones. Many do not realize that bones are constantly being broken down and rebuilt through the processes of resorption and formation..

Dairy products like A2 milk, cheese and yogurt are excellent sources of dietary calcium. Low serum levels of calcium can cause a number of problems, including muscular cramping due to an imbalance of calcium in the muscle and surrounding fluids.

Muscular contraction and exercise performance in active individuals is also compromised by low serum calcium. In addition to calcium intake, athletes should be aware that weight-bearing exercise is beneficial in the maintenance of a healthy skeleton.


Non-weight bearing sports like bicycling and swimming have been associated with bone mass similar to or below that of normal sedentary people (It is important to fit in some weight bearing exercise and consume varied sources of calcium in your diet.


When it comes to controlling muscle contraction and relaxation, calcium and magnesium are two important minerals, working synergistically to maintain normal electrical potentials and to coordinate muscle contraction relaxation responses in the muscles.

In muscle cells, an increased calcium concentration triggers contraction of the muscle fibres while increased intracellular magnesium concentration counteracts this effect, resulting in relaxation.

Calcium plays an integral role in the formation of bones and teeth, which is its main function. It carries nerve impulses, and also aids in muscle contraction and blood clotting. Most of the calcium in the body lies within the skeletal system, but the cells and blood need a certain quantity as well.

Calcium needs to be ingested via external sources so that it is not extracted from the bones, eventually leading to severe depletion.

Calcium builds bone strength, helps in normal muscle and nerve functioning and water transport across cell membrane deficiencies in calcium spent during extreme exercise may further trigger imbalances in its ideal ratio of 2:1 to magnesium associated with muscle spasms and cramping.

When we want to voluntarily move, the brain sends an impulse down the spinal cord out the peripheral nerve to the muscle cells.  This impulse causes calcium (stored in the sarcoplasmic reticulum) to flood the muscle filaments (within the cell).  This starts a chain of events within the cell resulting in muscle fiber shortening, muscle contraction.  

In order for the cell to “relax”, the calcium must be returned to the sarcoplasmic reticulum and the mitochondria must supply fresh ATP.  This process is repeated many times in one “contraction”.  The total number of cells activated in a contraction determines how powerful the muscle contracts.  From the runner’s standpoint, the rate that this process takes place determines the speed that an athlete can run.  

With this in mind, we can speculate that some muscle cramping can result from a failure to reabsorb calcium, failure to deliver ATP or from excessive, non-voluntary, neural stimulation.  The later being the likely cause of running related muscle cramps.  Other causes include electrolyte imbalances and dehydration.


Magnesium plays a vital role in energy production and your cells need magnesium to be present in order to convert glycogen into glucose for energy.  It stands to reason, therefore that magnesium deficiency can be responsible for a lack of energy delivery to the working muscle. 

Alongside the role in assisting sleep, a key contributor to running performance, magnesium also assists protein synthesis which is vital post run to ensure optimal muscle recovery and therefore reduce muscle soreness on subsequent training efforts, particularly if running on consecutive days.

One of the most abundantly present minerals in the body, half of it can be found in bones, while the rest is found inside the cells of organs and tissues. It facilitates several important biochemical reactions in the body. 

Main functions comprise regulation of heart beat, enhanced health of the immune system, facilitating nerve & muscle function, controlling blood sugar content, keeping blood pressure at normal levels and increasing bone strength. 

It plays a vital role in energy metabolism too.  Magnesium maintains muscle and nerve functions as well as conduction of nerve impulses Magnesium is essential for all energy conversion, muscle function, nerve conduction, and more than 300 different enzymatic reactions, and it is depleted from the body under times of physical and emotional stress.


Chloride is a most abundant negatively charged electrolyte, essential for oxygen exchange, digestion, water and pH balance. Chloride is an electrolyte that helps your body regulate the level of fluids in your body

Electrolytes are also essential to the proper functioning of fluids in the body, which not only act as the body’s electrical system, but also as the cooling system and highway, delivering nutrients in and wastes out.

Electrolytes are charged, water-soluble, essential minerals that make the body’s fluids electrically conductive. They govern a number of functions in the body including energy usage, regulating fluid balance and proper muscle function and are also essential to hydration.

Without electrolytes, the body cannot convert dormant energy into active energy. The energy in a battery is created by the movement of charged ions, i.e., electrolytes, and the body uses the same process.  Chloride  is essential for oxygen exchange, digestion, water and pH balance.

Dextrose anhydrous is the purest form of dextrose, commonly called glucose. It is manufactured by refining dextrose monohydrate, itself a pure form of dextrose. Dextrose anhydrous provides instant energy. It is the primary ingredient in oral rehydration salts (ORS). 

Dextrose anhydrous is used in intravenous (IV) fluids to provide nutrients to patients under intensive care who are unable to receive them by the oral route. Dextrose anhydrous complements the function of saline solution for a total electrolyte-energy balance. When dissolved in fluid, salts tend to break apart into their component ions, creating an electrically-conductive solution. 

For example, table salt (NaCl) dissolved in water dissociates into its component positive ion of sodium (Na+) and negative ion of chloride (Cl-).

The major negatively-charged ion (anion), chloride is primarily found in extracellular fluid and works closely with sodium to maintain proper balance and pressure of the various fluid compartments of the body (blood, inside cells, and the fluid between cells). It is also vitally important for maintaining proper acidity in the body, passively balancing out the positive ions of blood, tissue and organs.

Like sodium, most chloride is obtained through salt in the diet.  Chloride toxicity (hyperchloremia) and deficiency (hypochloremia) are both rarities, but can occur due to other electrolyte imbalances. Symptoms may include respiratory difficulty and pH imbalance.


Like sodium, chloride influences neural activity and muscle function, but chloride carries a negative charge rather than a positive one. Chloride is primarily found along with sodium in ordinary table salt, otherwise known as sodium chloride, and because it is in most foods, insufficient intake is rare. Chloride, in the form of hydrochloric acid, is also a major component of gastric juice, which in turn digests and absorbs essential nutrients from food. 

Chloride is an “essential” mineral for humans.  It is abundant in ionic trace mineral preparations. It is a major mineral nutrient that occurs primarily in body fluids. Chloride is a prominent negatively charged ion of the blood, where it represents 70% of the body’s total negative ion content.  On average, an adult human body contains approximately 115 grams of chloride, making up about 0.15% of total body weight. 

The suggested amount of chloride intake ranges from 750 to 900 milligrams per day, based on the fact that total obligatory loss of chloride in the average person is close to 530 milligrams per day.  As the principle negatively charged ion in the body, chloride serves as one of the main electrolytes of the body. 

Chloride, in addition to potassium and sodium, assist in the conduction of electrical impulses when dissolved in bodily water. Potassium and sodium become positive ions as they lose an electron when dissolved and chloride becomes a negative ion as it gains an electron when dissolved. A positive ion is always accompanied by a negative ion, hence the close relationship between sodium, potassium and chloride. 

The electrolytes are distributed throughout all body fluids including the blood, lymph, and the fluid inside and outside cells. The negative charge of chloride balances against the positive charges of sodium and potassium ions in order to maintain serum osmolarity.

In addition to its functions as an electrolyte, chloride combines with hydrogen in the stomach to make hydrochloric acid, a powerful digestive enzyme that is responsible for the break down of proteins, absorption of other metallic minerals, and activation of intrinsic factor, which in turn absorbs vitamin B12. 

Chloride is specially transported into the gastric lumen, in exchange for another negatively charged electrolyte (bicarbonate), in order to maintain electrical neutrality across the stomach membrane. After utilization in hydrochloric acid, some chloride is reabsorbed by the intestine, back into the blood stream where it is required for maintenance of extracellular fluid volume. 

Chloride is both actively and passively absorbed by the body, depending on the current metabolic demands.  A constant exchange of chloride and bicarbonate, between red blood cells and the plasma helps to govern the pH balance and transport of carbon dioxide, a waste product of respiration, from the body. 

With sodium and potassium, chloride works in the nervous system to aid in the transport of electrical impulses throughout the body, as movement of negatively charged chloride into the cell propagates the nervous electrical potential.

Deficiency of chloride is rare.  However, when it does occur, it results in a life threatening condition known as alkalosis, in which the blood becomes overly alkaline. A tedious balance between alkalinity and acidity is in constant flux, and must be vigilantly maintained throughout the entire body. 

Alkalosis may occur as a result of excessive loss of sodium, such as heavy sweating during endurance exercise, and in cases of prolonged vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms include muscle weakness, loss of appetite, irritability, dehydration, and profound lethargy. 

Hypochloremia may result from water overload, wasting conditions, and extensive bodily burns with sequestration of extracellular fluids. In a situation in which infants were inadvertently fed chloride-deficient formula, many experienced failure to thrive, anorexia, and weakness in their first year of life.

Excessive intakes of dietary chloride only occur with the ingestion of large amounts of salt and potassium chloride. The toxic effects of such diets, such as fluid retention and high blood pressure, are attributed to the high sodium and potassium levels.  

Chloride toxicity has not been observed in humans except in the special case of impaired sodium chloride metabolism, e.g. in congestive heart failure. Healthy individuals can tolerate the intake of large quantities of chloride provided that there is a concomitant intake of fresh water. 

Other situations in which increased blood levels of chloride are seen include diseases of improper waste elimination that occur in kidney diseases. Excess chloride is normally excreted in the urine, sweat, and bowels. In fact, excess urinary excretion of chloride occurs in high salt diets. 

Excessive intakes of chloride can occur in a person with compromised health in addition to an unhealthy diet.  However, those that follow a healthy diet and lead an active lifestyle may need to consider supplementing their diet with this important mineral.

Chloride is one of several electrolytes in your body and with sodium and potassium is necessary for maintaining your body’s homeostasis. As an electrolyte, chloride assists with fluid balance, delivery of oxygen to your cells, and acid-base balance.

In your extracellular fluid, chloride which can move easily across cell membranes associates with sodium, but within your cells associates with potassium. Together, electrolytes maintain a voltage across cell membranes which functions to carry other nutrients in and out of cells.

Electrolytes are particularly important in muscle, nerve and heart cells where they act together to conduct electrical impulses for nerve impulses and muscle contractions. Your kidneys maintain consistent blood electrolyte concentrations.

The term “electrolytes” refers to salts, such as sodium chloride and potassium chloride which dissolve in water and separate into charged ions: Sodium = Na+, Chloride = Cl-, and Potassium = K+. Water containing dissolved electrolytes can conduct an electrical current and is known as an electrolyte solution.

The negative and positive charges are matched so that if more negative ions come into the solution negative ions must leave or positive ions must enter the solution to equalise the negative ions. That is, if Na+ ions come into the solution K+ ions must leave. Sodium and potassium usually move in opposite directions across cell membranes.

Sodium and chloride are generally found outside of body cells while potassium, magnesium, sulfate and phosphorus are found within cells. 

Our bodies rely on a sophisticated buffering system to maintain proper pH levels. Lungs regulate the amount of carbon dioxide in the body, most of which is combined with water and converted to carbonic acid (H2CO3). This carbonic acid can then be quickly converted to bicarbonate (HCO3-), which is the key component in the pH buffer.

When acids build up through metabolic processes or production of lactic acid in your muscles, the kidneys release this bicarbonate (an alkaline solution) into your system to counteract the increased acidity. If your body is becoming more basic, the kidneys will lessen the amount of bicarbonate to increase acidity.

Without this system, rapid changes in pH balance could cause severe problems in the body like damaging sensitive tissue around the central nervous system. This bicarbonate buffer is one of the biggest reason our bodies can maintain homeostasis and function properly.

Prolonged exercise requires sustained energy to maintain muscle contraction. This energy is provided by the continual production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the universal energy molecule.   ATP is produced when a fuel is broken down to release energy.

Nutrition or energy is retained from converting carbohydrates, fat, and protein to adenosine triphosphate or ATP.   When ATP is broken down energy is released which allows the muscles to contract.   Different nutrients have their unique properties which determine how they get converted to ATP.

It is not easy for our body to store ATP (whatever stored ATP there is would be used up in a matter of seconds), so it is critical to continuously create ATP during exercise.

For any training of moderate to high intensity carbohydrate is the main source of energy. Low intensity exercise for longer periods of time uses fat as its main source of energy. Body tissue and especially the damaged muscles are repaired by proteins which are normally not used as fuel for muscle activity.

The ATP-CP (adenosine triphosphate - creatine phosphate) is an energy pathway that supplies about 8 to 10 seconds of energy for short extremely high running bursts such as a 100 meter sprint by Usain Bolt.   

This anaerobic energy pathway doesn't need any oxygen to create the ATP.   

First all the ATP is stored in the muscle is used up after that the creatine phosphate is used to re-synthesize ATP until there is no more CP. After this process the body will change its energy supply to either aerobic or anaerobic metabolism (energy from glycogen) to produce ATP to fuel exercise.



The anaerobic glycolysis energy pathway produces ATP from carbohydrates only.  This energy pathway produces lactic acid as a by product.  

Anaerobic glycolysis doesn't require oxygen for the (partial) breakdown of glucose. 

For short high- intensity running periods which last no longer than several minutes before the lactic acid build-up reaches a threshold know as the lactate threshold this pathway is employed.  

After reaching the lactate threshold, burning muscle pain and fatigue make it difficult to continue running at the same intensity.

Many runners sabotage their training by allowing their long runs and easy runs to become anaerobic, and this can sacrifice future races, as well as future workouts.

If you “go anaerobic” early in a race, you will fatigue sooner, and your ability to maintain pace will take a nosedive. Lactate pools in your muscles, and you will have to slow dramatically to get your body back into an aerobic state. 

For those running the marathon, learning the difference between aerobic running and anaerobic running is absolutely critical. The faster you run, the more energy you burn – just like a car burning fuel on a highway.

 During the marathon, your body needs to conserve as much fuel as possible; if you run faster than your aerobic threshold (the point at which you switch from running primarily using aerobic respiration to running anaerobically) you will burn through your fuel stores faster, and more than likely bonk before you finish.

The easiest way to test whether you’re running aerobically is to perform what is called the “talk test”. While running, try to speak to someone (or yourself if alone) out-loud. If you can get out a short paragraph without too much trouble , you’re running aerobically. If you can only get out one sentence before you start grasping for breath, you’re running too hard – slow down.

At the heart of aerobic training is the scientific fact that to exercise, your body needs to break down sugar and convert it to glycogen so it can be used as energy or fuel.

In the presence of adequate oxygen, the body utilizes the aerobic system, also known as aerobic glycolysis, to power continuous running.

In the aerobic system energy ATP is produced through Pyruvic Acid and Lipid/Protein fragments entering the Kreb Cycle and the Electron Transport Cycle.

During aerobic respiration, you breathe in, the body efficiently uses all the oxygen it needs to power the muscles, and you exhale.

When you are “running aerobically” (or running easy), your muscles have enough oxygen to produce all the energy they need to perform. Capillaries are the smallest of the body’s blood vessels and they help deliver oxygen and nutrients to the muscle tissues while shuttling waste products out.

The greater the number of capillaries you have surrounding each muscle fiber, the faster you can transport oxygen and carbohydrate into your muscles.

Aerobic training (easy running) increases the number of capillaries per muscle fiber.

Myoglobin is a special protein in your muscles that binds the oxygen that enters the muscle fiber.
When oxygen becomes limited during exercise, myoglobin releases the oxygen to the mitochondria to produce more energy.

The more myoglobin you have in your muscle fibers, the more oxygen you can sequester to the muscle under aerobic duress – like during a race.

Aerobic training increases the myoglobin content of your muscle fibers.

Mitochondria are microscopic organelle found in your muscles cells that contribute to the production of ATP (energy).

In the presence of oxygen, mitochondria breakdown carbohydrate, fat, and protein into usable energy.
The more mitochondria you have, and the greater their density, the more energy you can generate during exercise, which will enable you to run faster and longer.

Aerobic training increases both the number and the size of the mitochondria in your muscle fibers.
The heart derives energy from aerobic metabolism via many different types of nutrients. 60% of the energy to power the heart is derived from fat (free fatty acids and triglycerides), 35% from carbohydrates, and 5% from amino acids and ketone bodies from proteins.

 These proportions may vary widely with available nutrients in diet. Malnutrition will not result in the death of heart tissue in the way that oxygen deficiency will, because the body has glucose reserves that sustain the vital organs of the body as well as the ability to recycle and use lactate aerobically.

Heart muscle also contains large amounts of a pigment called myoglobin. Myoglobin is similar to hemoglobin in that it contains a heme group (an oxygen binding site). Myoglobin transfers oxygen from the blood to the muscle cell and also stores reserve oxygen for aerobic metabolic function in the muscle cell.

Aerobic respiration requires oxygen (O2) in order to create ATP.

Although they are both running sports the 100-meter sprint and the marathon are two completely different events. The 100-meter sprint is a brief, explosive event ; the marathon is a prolonged, high-intensity, endurance event . The essence of the 100-meter sprint is speed, with little oxygen breathed in during its 10-second duration, making the event almost entirely anaerobic. If Usain Bolt understands this he can run faster in the 100 metres sprint.

For the body to perform exercise for any given intensity or duration it requires energy. Energy is provided chemically in the form of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), a high-energy phosphate stored within skeletal muscle.

ATP is the only fuel that can be used directly by the working muscles for contraction. The body has limited stores (~80-100 grams) of ATP, only enough to supply energy for two seconds of maximal sprinting; therefore ATP must be continually be resynthesized from other sources through different metabolic pathways.

There are three different energy systems in the body:

The Immediate System - Fuelled by the intramuscular high-energy phosphates ATP and Phosphocreatine (PCr);

The Short-Term System - The anaerobic glycolysis (glycogenolysis and/or glycolysis) or lactate system; fuelled by glycogen, glucose, and the glycerol backbone of triglycerides; and

The Long-Term System - The aerobic glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation of the macronutrients carbohydrate, lipids and protein.

Maximal, high-intensity, short duration exercise, like the 100-meter sprint, uses the immediate energy system. There is 4 to 5 times more PCr in skeletal muscle than ATP and the immediate energy system begins to resynthesize ATP anaerobically via PCr hydrolysis as soon as the working muscles contract.

The rate of PCr hydrolysis is highest within the first two seconds of contraction, but it begins to decline after only a few seconds of maximal contraction due to incomplete PCr resynthesis

During prolonged exercise like the marathon, as long as there is oxygen produced to the working muscles ATP can be resynthesized through aerobic metabolism.

Carbohydrates are stored in the body as either glycogen or glucose, predominantly in the liver and muscle, but also in adipose tissue, the bloodstream, and the brain. Carbohydrates are metabolized through glycolysis, a process that can be both anaerobic (conversion to pyruvate or lactate) and aerobic (continuation through metabolic pathways as pyruvate converts to Acetyl-CoA and enters the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain for oxidative phosphorylation).

During the 100-meter sprint, anaerobic glycolysis of glucose uses two ATP during the reaction, thus yielding a net two ATP; if glycogen undergoes glycogenolysis before anaerobic glycolysis the net yield is three ATP. The 100-meter sprint utilizes both PCr and glycogen as fuel. There is enough PCr in the leg muscles to provide half the ATP needed for the race. Glycogen therefore provides the other half of the energy required

During the marathon a further two ATP is provided through substrate-level phosphorylation in the Krebs cycle, and 32 ATP molecules are resynthesized during oxidative phosphorylation, regenerating a total of 36 ATP through the aerobic metabolism of carbohydrate. Aerobic metabolism via the long-term energy system contributes primarily to the resynthesis of ATP during the marathon, utilizing carbohydrates, lipids, and some protein as fuel

Muscle glycogen is the most important fuel in the 100-meter sprint, as it is immediately available when contraction occurs

Protein is stored predominantly in muscle in the body, but also in the liver and minutely in adipose tissue. When glycogen stores have become depleted protein can become an important fuel, and during endurance events such as the marathon, protein can provide up to 10% of the energy needed for ATP resynthesis

Short, high-intensity exercise, such as the 100-meter sprint has a greater reliance upon carbohydrates as a fuel source than the still-high-but-lower-intensity marathon, which relies more upon the oxidation of lipids to regenerate ATP

Aerobic metabolism is the pathway which provides energy for long distance running. Aerobic metabolism converts carbohydrates, fats, and protein to ATM using oxygen.

 In the first stages when you start running, ATP is produced by anaerobic metabolism until breathing and heart rate increase.  With increased breathing and heart rate the endurance runners' body switches to aerobic metabolism as more oxygen becomes available. 

Your running can then continue until you reach the lactic threshold. At this stage running intensity needs to be reduced to lower lactic acid levels.

Nutrients fuel the energy systems when converted to ATP depending on the duration and intensity of the run. Of all nutrients it is carbohydrate which is the main energy provider for high intensity runs.

When your body has warmed up during running, carbohydrate metabolism takes over from fat metabolism. Using carbohydrate for fuel is more efficient than fat but has limited availability. Stored carbohydrate reserves will be able to provide energy for moderate to high intensity runs for about 2 hours.

When the stored carbohydrates are used up glycogen depletion occurs and unless they are not replaced runners may hit the wall or bonk. To avoid this runners need to refuel during their run or race. Especially during a full marathon it is important to eat easily digestible carbohydrates if you are running for more than two hours (no one has run a marathon under two hours yet).

Failing to consume carbohydrates will force you to reduce your running intensity while shifting back to fat metabolism.

When running intensity increases, there is a dramatic drop off in carbohydrate metabolism efficiency due to a lack of oxygen and anaerobic metabolism takes over. Carbohydrates can produce about twenty times more energy (ATP) per gram if it is metabolized in the presence of adequate oxygen than when generated in the oxygen-starved, anaerobic environment that occurs during intense running or sprinting.

With appropriate training, these energy systems adapt and become more efficient and allow greater running duration at higher intensity.

Once the blood leaves the heart, its flow to the muscles depends on the oxygen transport capacity of the blood, which is determined by red blood cell volume and the amount of hemoglobin that transports oxygen in the red blood cells, and the volume of capillaries that perfuse the muscle fibers.

The greater the network of capillaries surrounding the muscle fibers, the shorter the diffusion distance for oxygen from the capillaries to the mitochondria, the important microscopic factories responsible for aerobic metabolism.

At faster running speeds, there is a greater reliance on anaerobic metabolism for the production of energy, and aerobic metabolism can’t keep up. When this happens, hydrogen ions accumulate in the muscles and blood, decreasing the pH and causing metabolic acidosis and fatigue.

 The speed at which acidosis occurs is called the acidosis (lactate) threshold and is an important determinant of marathon performance because it represents the fastest speed that can be sustained aerobically without a significant anaerobic contribution (and thus the development of metabolic acidosis). 

Fatigue is a natural consequence of hard work and exercise. If you overstep your energetic boundaries while running, your body makes energy anaerobically, or without oxygen. This process often occurs due to overtraining and inadequate nutrition. Rest, proper diet and the right training can improve your endurance.


 Food fuels your body; without enough calories and the right balance of nutrients, your body cannot perform optimally. Fatigue during and after runs may indicate a deficiency in calories or in certain vitamins or minerals. 

As a runner, your diet should consist of 50 to 70 percent carbohydrates, 20 to 30 percent fats and 10 to 20 percent protein. Eating a variety of foods can help you ingest adequate amounts of important vitamins and minerals like B12, B6 and iron. B vitamins are needed for energy metabolism, red blood cells and nerve health while iron is used to transport oxygen to muscle tissue.

Training should include rest days and easy runs to allow muscles and other tissues adequate time to repair and rebuild. Muscles can be trained, however, to resist fatigue. Performing tempo runs at the lactate threshold -- the pace where lactic acid builds and muscles tire -- may decrease muscle fatigue. 

Adding sprinting and plyometric exercises to your training regimen can also increase your endurance capacity.

Plyometric training is an  important part of training a distance runner to recruit muscle fibers most efficiently.

Marathon runners tend to recruit the aerobic slow-twitch fibers the majority of the time. However, when a runner engages in speed work or plyometrics, more of the fast-twitch muscle fibers are recruited. Running economy is all about using oxygen efficiently. 

For instance, two runners could be running at 8:00 per mile pace, but the one that is recruiting fewer muscle fibers will have better running economy. Additionally, either runner’s economy can decrease throughout a run as they fatigue. “Initially at 8:00 per mile pace, you’ll be recruiting just slow-twitch fibers, but if you are to hold that pace for 2-plus hours, as you fatigue, the fast-twitch muscles will be recruited, even though you’re still going 8:00 pace

Increasing the rate at which muscles can produce force helps improve how oxygen is used to maintain any given speed. It’s really about exploiting the elastic properties of muscles and tendons and how they utilize elastic energy.  Just just six weeks of plymometrics leads to improved running economy.

People have two general types of skeletal muscle fibers: slow-twitch (type I) and fast-twitch (type II). Slow-twitch muscles help enable long-endurance feats such as marathon running, while fast-twitch muscles fatigue faster but are used in powerful bursts of movements like sprinting

Slow twitch muscle fibres: Contract slowly, but keep going for a long time ( like for marathon )
Fast twitch muscle fibres: Contract quickly, but rapidly get tired

Muscles that contain a lot of slow twitch fibres are red, because they contain lots of blood vessels. Slow twitch muscle fibres rely on a rich supply of oxygenated blood as they use oxygen to produce energy for muscle contraction.

Fast twitch muscle fibres don't use oxygen to make energy, so they don't need such a rich blood supply. This is why fast twitch muscles are lighter in colour than muscles that contain a lot of slow twitch muscle fibres.

Fast twitch muscle fibres can produce small amounts of energy very quickly whereas slow twitch muscles can produce large amounts of energy slowly.



Anaerobic Capacity refers to the body's ability to regenerate ATP using the glycolytic system and Anaerobic Power refers to the body's ability to regenerate ATP using the phosphagen system.


ATP is created in essentially two ways. One is by aerobic metabolism using oxygen carried in the bloodstream.
Anaerobic metabolism is not efficient while aerobic metabolism is.

These pathways can be further divided. The three energy systems most commonly mentioned in exercises include:

ATP-CP (Anaerobic) Energy Pathway - which supplies short bursts of energy lasting up to 10 seconds.

Anaerobic Metabolism (Glycolysis) - which supplies energy for short, high-intensity bursts of activity lasting several minutes.

Aerobic Metabolism - which supplies most of the energy needed for long duration, less intense exercise and requires plenty of oxygen. The waste products, carbon dioxide, and water, are removed in sweat and exhalation.


Aerobic metabolism fuels most of the energy needed for long duration or endurance exercises.

When glycogen energy stores are depleted, and the cells only have fat as a fuel, they can only function aerobically (thus at a maximum of about 50% VO2max). As a result we have "hit the wall" or "bonked" and are markedly limited in our exercise capacity.


The heart, brain and most slow twitch fibres are very apt at clearing lactate from the blood to the extent that they prefer lactate as a source of fuel. Note however, that lactate must first be converted into pyruvate before it can be used as a source of energy.

Anaerobic pathways can provide ATP immediately, but they also have limited stores that need to be refilled after they are used up.

With endurance training, the body becomes better able to produce ATP through aerobic metabolism. The cardiorespiratory system and aerobic energy systems become more efficient at delivering oxygen to the working muscles and converting carbohydrate and fat to energy.

ATP is created in essentially two ways. One is by aerobic metabolism using oxygen carried in the bloodstream.   As exercise intensity increases, byproducts of anaerobic metabolism cause an increase in blood acidity, causing a surge in muscle fatigue. Fatigue is due to hydrogen ion accumulation, among several other factors,  not the commonly implicated “lactic acid buildup”

The primary pathway for ATP regeneration during endurance exercise is mitochondrial respiration, which continues from the same metabolic pathway as glycolysis, the process by which muscle glycogen or blood glucose is converted into another chemical molecule called pyruvate. Depending on exercise intensity, pyruvate either enters the mitochondria or is converted to lactate. 

At exercise intensity levels below the lactate threshold, pyruvate enters the mitochondria, and muscle contraction continues through oxidative ATP production. However, at exercise intensity levels above the lactate threshold, the capacity to produce ATP through mitochondrial respiration is compromised, and pyruvate is converted to lactate.

The energy plant of the muscle cell is called the mitochondria.  Running ability and fitness are partly related to the total ability of the mitochondria to produce energy.  The mitochondria convert food (mostly triglycerides that are broken down to free fatty acids) into adenosine triphosphate (ATP) that is used as energy by the cells.  This process requires oxygen.  

The sarcoplasm, another set of proteins in the muscle cell, can convert glycogen and glucose to ATP in the absence of oxygen, so called anaerobic glycolysis. ATP is the only fuel that can be used directly by the working muscles for contraction. The body has limited stores (~80-100 grams) of ATP, only enough to supply energy for couple of seconds of maximal sprinting; therefore ATP must be continually be resynthesized from other sources through different metabolic pathways.

Short, high-intensity exercise, such as the 100-meter sprint has a greater reliance upon carbohydrates as a fuel source than the lower-intensity marathon, which relies more upon the oxidation of lipids to regenerate ATP .

If you want to increase your running speed, you must know that it is actually not your speed holding you back, but your aerobic endurance.

Energy is stored in the body in various forms of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins as well as in the molecule creatine phosphate.

Carbohydrate and fat are the primary sources of energy, Adenosine triphospate (ATP) is the body’s usable form of energy.

Glucose is the only fuel that can be used during glycolysis, which literally means the breakdown of glucose.

This breakdown creates ATP as glucose is converted into 2 molecules of pyruvate.

Hydrogen is also produced during this process and if oxygen is present, the aerobic system  can use hydrogen and pyruvate to produce more ATP.

Again, ATP is  a complex chemical compound formed with the energy released from food and stored in all cells, particularly muscles. Only from the energy released by the breakdown of this compound can the cells perform work. The breakdown of ATP produces energy and ADP.

CP - Creatine Phosphate is a chemical compound stored in muscle, which when broken down aids in the manufacture of ATP. The combination of ADP and CP produces ATP.

LA - Lactic acid: a fatiguing metabolite of the lactic acid system resulting from the incomplete breakdown of glucose.   Though excessive lactate production is part of the extreme fatigue process, it is the protons produced at the same time that restricts further performance

The aerobic energy system utilises proteins, fats and carbohydrate (glycogen) for resynthesising ATP. Energy to power muscle contractions is released when oxygen combines with carbohydrates, fats, and proteins in the cell to produce Adenosine Triphosphate or ATP.


The foods we eat provide these three energy containing compounds: carbohydrates, fats, and protein. Carbohydrates are the primary energy source for short, maximum performance events (sprints or near 100% VO2 max). Both fats and carbohydrates can serve as an energy source for the cell in endurance events (generally performed at less than 50% VO2 max.) 

Proteins are used to maintain and repair body tissues, and are only rarely used as an energy source to power muscle activity .

VO2 max, or maximal oxygen uptake, is one factor that can determine an athlete's capacity to perform sustained exercise and is linked to aerobic endurance. 

VO2 max refers to the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilize during intense or maximal exercise. It is measured as "milliliters of oxygen used in one minute per kilogram of body weight."

This measurement is generally considered the best indicator of an athlete's cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance.

VO2 max results vary greatly. The average for a sedentary individual is close to 35 ml/kg/min. Elite endurance athletes often average 70 ml/kg/min.

One of the highest recorded VO2 max results (90 ml/kg/min) was that of a cross country skier. Cyclist Lance Armstrong's VO2 max was reported at 85 ml/kg/min.

Most elite athletes will have VO2 max values well over 60ml/kg/min, this number alone is not a guarantee of elite performance. A high VO2 max may indicate an athlete's potential for excellent aerobic endurance, but many other factors can determine the winner of a particular race.

Why is oxygen important for training? It’s used to break down the carbs, fats and protein in your body into usable fuel for your muscles.

If less oxygen is available than required, i.e. when running a marathon hard , the body has to find other ways of providing that fuel. A by-product of this is lactic acid, which will slow you down.

Therefore if you can get more oxygen into the bloodstream the less lactic acid will be produced for a given workload.

In general VO2 max is the highest at age 20 and decreases nearly 30 percent by age 65. This means that VO2 max is an indication of the maximum amount of oxygen one can use in one minute per kilogram of body weight. 

Therefore increasing your VO2 Max would be particularly useful if you wish to participate in endurance events like triathlons and marathons!

VO2 Max is measured as the actual maximum oxygen uptake relative to one's body weight, therefore by cutting down our body fat percentage, it would indirectly increase your VO2 max value.



 The VO2 max can simply be defined as ‘the body’s maximal capacity to process oxygen at any moment in time.’

The factors that impact VO2 max – which is largely genetically predetermined, can be broken into two distinct categories: (i) oxygen delivery – which includes such things as heart and lung size, capillary density around working muscles and red blood cell concentration and (ii) oxygen utilisation. 

This includes such factors as mitochondria concentration within the muscle, aerobic enzyme concentration and myoglobin concentration in the working muscle, which ‘picks up’ the available oxygen being delivered by the blood.





HIIT leads to greater improvements in VO2 max 


HIIT is a training idea in which low to moderate intensity intervals are alternated with high intensity intervals.

HIIT can be applied to running or to exercises such as squatting. HIIT is considered to be much more effective than normal cardio because the intensity is higher and you are able to increase both your aerobic and anaerobic endurance while burning more fat than ever before.


HIIT has been shown to burn adipose tissue more effectively than low-intensity exercise - up to 50% more efficiently.  It has also been shown to speed up your metabolism which helps you burn more calories .




Theoretically, the more oxygen you can use during high-level exercise, the more ATP (energy) you can produce. This is often the case with elite endurance athletes who typically have very high VO2 max values.

V02 max should not be confused with the lactate threshold (LT) or anaerobic threshold (AT), which refers to the point during exhaustive, all-out exercise at which lactate builds up in the muscles during exercise. With proper training, athletes are often able to substantially increase their AT and exercise longer at a higher intensity.
 VO2 max can be increased through exercising between 65-to-85 per cent of maximal heart rate over at least 20 minutes per session, three-to-five times per week

VO2 Max and Factors that affect maximum work:  VO2 Max decreases about 9% per decade after 25 (if training is discontinued).  Males have a higher VO2Max than females.  Training can increase VO2Max 5 to 15% on average.  Some elite athletes have improved 25% with training. 

Ventilation does not normally limit VO2Max as indicated by no fall in paO2 (oxygen in the blood) during exercise.  Untrained persons typically have a low AT (about 55 % of the VO2 max) while elite endurance athletes, at the other end of the spectrum, have a high AT (about 89 to 90 % of the VO2 max). Remember, the maximal heart rate is often closely aligned with the VO2 max (but not always).

This explains why an marathon runner can run very long distances at a high speed for hours: their AT threshold is so high they are able to generate far more power and speed at a high heart rate only using the aerobic metabolism

Runners  who does not have a high AT threshold could not sustain such a fast pace with a high heart rate without dipping into anaerobic metabolism for energy (and thus fatigue in only a couple minutes).  Also note they are able to run for long periods of time at their Vo2 Max!

Aerobic pathways are used by the muscle cells for energy production (metabolizing both fats and carbohydrates as an energy source) up to exercise levels of approximately 50% VO2 max.

Your percentage of VO2 max is equal to the proportion of your calories that come from carbohydrates. The rest is fat. So when you run 5k pace (~98-100% VO2 max) you get ~95-100% of your calories from carbohydrates. When you jog very slowly, more than half your calories can come from fat.
In a marathon, at ~80-85% VO2 max, the typical runner will "hit the wall" around 21-23mi without any external carbohydrate ingestion. At easy to moderate run pace (55-70% VO2 max) you can last much longer.

Fitness can be measured by the volume of oxygen you can consume while exercising at your maximum capacity. VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen in millilitres, one can use in one minute per kilogram of body weight.

Those who are fit have higher VO2 max values and can exercise more intensely than those who are not as well conditioned.

Numerous studies show that you can increase your VO2 max by working out at an intensity that raises your heart rate to between 65 and 85% of its maximum for at least 20 minutes three to five times a week  

A mean value of VO2 max for male athletes is about 3.5 litres/minute and for female athletes it is about 2.7 litres/minute.

The physical limitations that restrict the rate at which energy can be released aerobically are dependent upon:   the chemical ability of the muscular cellular tissue system to use oxygen in breaking down fuels and the combined ability of cardiovascular and pulmonary systems to transport the oxygen to the muscular tissue system

Utilization theory maintains that VO2 max is determined by the body's ability to utilize the available oxygen whereas Presentation Theory maintains it is the ability of the body's cardiovascular system to deliver oxygen to active tissues.

As we get older our VO2 max decreases.    VO2 max on its own is a poor predictor of performance but using the velocity (vVO2 max) and duration (tlimvVO2 max) that an athlete can operate at their VO2 max will provide a better indication of performance.


VO2 max decreases as altitude increases above 1600m and for every 1000m above 1600m maximal oxygen uptake decreases by approximately 8-11%.   The decrease is mainly due to a decrease in maximal cardiac output (product of heart rate and stroke volume).    

Stoke volume decreases due to the immediate decrease in blood plasma volume.

A large contributing factor to a Kenyan marathon runners VO2 Max score and his lower oxygen utilization at lactate threshold has to do with the HIGH altitude at which they live and train. 

Running economy is the efficiency with which one is able to run i.e. the amount of energy consumed to cover a specific distance..  The factors that contribute to running economy are:  RUN IN shoes, height, stride length, somatotype, body fat (hip to waist ratio), leg morphology, kinematics, pelvis size and feet size amongst others.


Shoes must have earthing at the bottom to dissipate free electrons. This is the first time this is being said on this planet.  Barefoot running takes too much of a toll by jarring on hard roads .



VO2 MAX gives us an indication of the potential cardiac output..  Your performance in endurance sports depends on your ability to consume oxygen at a high rate for a sustained period of time.

A high VO2 max is necessary for success in endurance events, but a high VO2 max alone does not ensure success.    Currently, sports scientists determine performance through lactate thresholds and fractional utilisation of VO2 Max.


Muscles run on oxygen, that’s one of the reasons trainers used to spend time measuring VO2 max. It told them how much oxygen muscles were receiving and therefore gave them means to improve their athletes and reduce muscle fatigue.  Better VO2 Max should mean you can more efficient send oxygen to the muscles, which means better endurance and speed. 


Translated literally, V represents “volume”; O2, “oxygen”; and max is short for “maximum.” In other words, the test measures the most oxygen a person can process.

As you stand at rest your body uses ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is a biochemical your body uses to help create energy, just to keep your cells alive. For the average person at rest, they use about 3.5 milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight. 

But when you exercise, obviously that number goes up because more energy is required, and therefore more oxygen is required to transfer that energy to the systems that need it. The more fit you are, the more oxygen you should be able to use because you’re better able to transfer more energy.

This is, essentially, what a VO2 max test measures. The higher your VO2 max, the better shape you’re in. For males 18 to 25, the range for above-average VO2 max is between 47 and 60 mL per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min); for women in the same age bracket, the range is 42 to 56. 

Men’s maxes tend to run higher than women’s because they have greater body size and, in effect, greater blood volume. Averages drop slightly with each successive age group. In general, we peak at age 20.

What accounts for a person’s VO2 max? It’s mostly about the blood, because blood is what transports oxygen to muscles and organs. The more one has, and the more hemoglobin-packed, the better. Other factors? 

A powerful heart to push all that blood where it needs go, as well as high capillary and mitochondrial density in the muscles.  

Yoga gives a boost.


VO2 tests are a way to measure the maximum volume of oxygen your body can use to make energy. When you work out, your body increases the amount of oxygen it consumes to produce energy (why you breathe harder when running faster) but at some point, your body reaches the maximum rate at which it can consume oxygen and convert it into usable energy. 

The most common analogy is to a car engine, the bigger the engine, the more potential power it has. When the needle reaches the red zone ( gear too low ) on your cars tachometer on the dashboard, your car starts to make a little noise and is not happy with you. 

Just like when working out past your VO2 max. Your demand for oxygen is higher than your body can supply, which is why your body fatigues quicker once above that maximum.

Accurately measuring VO2 max involves a physical effort sufficient in duration and intensity to fully tax the aerobic energy system. 

In general clinical and athletic testing, this usually involves a graded exercise test (either on a treadmill or on a cycle ergometer) in which exercise intensity is progressively increased while measuring:----- 
ventilation and
oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration of the inhaled and exhaled air.


VO2 max is reached when oxygen consumption remains at a steady state despite an increase in workload.


The factors affecting VO2 are often divided into supply and demand.  Supply is the transport of oxygen from the lungs to the mitochondria (including lung diffusion, stroke volume, blood volume, and capillary density of the skeletal muscle) while demand is the rate at which the mitochondria can reduce oxygen in the process of oxidative phosphorylation. 

Of these, the supply factor is often considered to be the limiting one. However, it has also been argued that while trained subjects probably are supply limited, untrained subjects can indeed have a demand limitation.

Cardiac output, pulmonary diffusion capacity, oxygen carrying capacity, and other peripheral limitations like muscle diffusion capacity, mitochondrial enzymes, and capillary density are all examples of VO2 max determinants. The body works as a system. If one of these factor is sub-par, then the whole system loses its normal capacity to function properly.


If VO2 max is your aerobic endurance potential then your lactate threshold plays a significant role in how much of that potential you are tapping.

Lactate threshold has been defined as:

The point during exercise of increasing intensity at which blood lactate begins to accumulate above resting levels, where lactate clearance is no longer able to keep up with lactate production.

During low intensity exercise, blood lactate remains at or near to resting levels. As exercise intensity increases there comes a break point where blood lactate levels rise sharply .

Several terms have been used to describe this shift and many coaches and athletes believe it is the same phenomenon: 
Lactate threshold 
Anaerobic threshold 
Aerobic threshold 
Onset of blood lactate accumulation (OBLA)


Although these terms are used interchangeably, they do not describe the same thing. Lactate accumulation only determines the balance between lactate production and its clearance and suggests nothing about the availability or lack of oxygen so the terms aerobic and anaerobic become a bit misleading.


OBLA generally occurs when the concentration of blood lactate reaches about 4mmol/L (6,7).
Maximal lactate steady state is defined as the exercise intensity at which maximal lactate clearance is equal to maximal lactate production. Maximal lactate steady state is considered one of the best indicators of performance perhaps even more efficient than lactate threshold .

The lactate threshold is normally expressed as a percentage of an individuals VO2 max. For example, if VO2 max occurs at 24 km/h on a treadmill test and a sharp rise in blood lactate concentration above resting levels is seen at 12 km/h then the lactate threshold is said to be 50% VO2 max.

In theory, an individual could exercise at any intensity up to their VO2 max indefinitely. However, this is not the case even amongst elite athletes. As the exercise intensity draws closer to that at VO2 max, a sharp increase in blood lactate accumulation and subsequent fatigue occurs the lactate threshold is broken.

In world-class athletes lactate threshold typically occurs at 70-80% VO2 max. In untrained individuals it occurs much sooner, at 50-60% VO2 max

Generally, in two people with the same VO2 max, the one with a higher lactate threshold will perform better in continuous-type endurance events.

Even though you pointers in this article are largely aimed at long distance runners, what advise do you give for people like me who play games like Racquetball and Tennis 4 to 5 days a week (1 to 1.5 hours) where you would seat a lot in short bursts, different type of breathing while playing the game to cover the court. What kind of re hydrating drink one should consume while playing racquet games? Are drinks like Gatorade good? Is there any homemade drink as per vedic recommendation?


    Also, I had read that as per Ayurveda, one needs to stop exercising as soon as your armpits get slightly wet. This way you stop the imbalance of more cells dying. How true is this?

      I personally know of two people who developed anxiety and panic attacks after attending AOL courses. They had hyperventilation and one had to be taken to a psychiatrist who started antidepressants and tranquilizers(benzos).

      Other understood the problem and managed with slow, deep breathing.

    I need your advice. 04 years back, I had chronic vomiting and I was not able to consume fats, proteins and fast food, spicy food etc. My body gets warm after consuming these foods. My bilirubin was 04 which doctors told is hereditary and told everything is fine in your body. I removed fats, proteins and restricted my diet and after 01-02 years I was able to consume everything. Till last month my health recovered.

    I used sesame oil in cooking and again same symptoms started and this time my mind also got affected esp. In evening, it was like after having bhang kind of feeling. I went for endoscopy and result showed reflux with bile gastritis which should have been done 04 years back. Doctor has given antacid, ursomax for liver for 03 months.

    Which treatment shall I opt allopathy, Ayurveda or homeopathy to recover normally without side effects. And where would you suggest to go for treatment.

      take a SECOND OPINION to check out if your problem is really Bile reflux, also called duodenogastric reflux.

      Bile reflux, occurs when bile flows upward from the small intestine into the stomach. Bile reflux is caused by damage to the pyloric valve, which is a ring of muscle that separates the stomach from the duodenum.

      Bile reflux signs and symptoms include:--
      Upper abdominal pain that may be severe
      Frequent heartburn — a burning sensation in your chest that sometimes spreads to your throat, along with a sour taste in your mouth
      Nausea
      Vomiting a greenish-yellow fluid (bile)
      Occasionally, a cough or hoarseness
      Unintended weight loss

      Eating a meal that contains even a small amount of fat signals your gallbladder to release bile, which flows through two small tubes (cystic duct and common bile duct) into the upper part of your small intestine (duodenum).

      Bile and food mix in the duodenum and enter your small intestine through the pyloric valve, a heavy ring of muscle located at the outlet of your stomach. The pyloric valve usually opens only slightly — enough to release about about 3.5 milliliters of liquefied food at a time, but not enough to allow digestive juices to reflux into the stomach.

      In many cases of bile reflux, the valve doesn't close properly, and bile washes back into the stomach.

      A peptic ulcer can block the pyloric valve so that it doesn't open enough to allow the stomach to empty as quickly as it should. Stagnant food in the stomach can lead to increased gastric pressure and allow bile and stomach acid to back up into the esophagus.

      BILE IS NOT AN ACID !!

      Rather it is an alkaline fluid consisting of bile salts, bile pigments, cholesterol and lecithin. It is produced by the liver, stored in the gallbladder and released intermittently into the duodenum, the upper part of the small intestine, when needed to digest fat.

      Many ignorant doctors confuse-

      Both acid reflux and bile reflux may afflict the same person, which can make diagnosis a challenge. But the stomach inflammation that results from bile reflux often causes a burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen that is not felt with acid reflux,

      Other symptoms of bile reflux may be confused with symptoms of acid reflux

      The opening between the esophagus and stomach, a muscular ring called the lower esophageal sphincter, is meant to keep stomach acid from backing up. When it malfunctions, acid reflux is the usual result.

      Avoid acidic foods, such as tomatoes and spicy foods.

      Eat small meals. . Eating smaller, more-frequent meals reduces pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter, helping to prevent the valve from opening at the wrong time.

      Eat smaller mealsStay upright after eating. After a meal, waiting two to three hours before lying down allows time for your stomach to empty.

      Eating a meal that contains even a small amount of fat signals your gallbladder to release bile.Limit fatty foods. High-fat meals relax the lower esophageal sphincter and slow the rate at which food leaves your stomach.

      Unlike acid reflux, changes in diet or lifestyle are usually ineffective in the prevention or treatment of bile reflux. Instead, bile reflux is most often managed with medications or, in severe cases, with surgery

      Tilted bed: Raising the head of the bed by about 6 inches may prevent reflux symptoms. This may be effective, because with the upper body elevated, gravity assists in preventing bile from flowing backwards through the digestive tract. Using a wood wedge or blocks is more effective than using pillows.

      Surgery is a treatment of last resort, if nothing else reduces severe symptoms of bile reflux or when there are signs of esophageal cancer. Diversion surgery (Roux-en-Y procedure): During the Roux-en-Y procedure, a new connection for bile drainage farther down in the intestine is made, resulting in the diversion of bile away from the stomach. The Roux-en-Y surgery reportedly has a 50-90% success rate. This is the same type of procedure as weight loss bypass surgery.
