This will be one of the most valuable posts on the internet about human health !  Health is wealth!!

The western world of medicine and surgery, has come to know about the human body's lymph node system only 60 years ago.

The Greeks Hippicratus, Ruphus and Hirphilos  came to know of the lymph nodes system from the Ayurvedic texts of India  , 2000 years ago.   You must understand that Ayurveda is 6000 years old.

The Ayurvedic massage for Lymph node drainage is amazingly scientific, using nav-dhanya dry powder. Nav Dhanya is 9 different grades of grain and pulses , having different scales of hardness and size.

When I wrote my post SURYA NAMASKAR, THE 11000 YEAR OLD VEDIC SUN SALUTATION- VADAKAYIL, I deliberately left out the physical aspect of Surya Namaskar.

I just referred to the blog statistics and have found out that my post SURYA NAMASKAR was downloaded 36278 times in a little under 10 months.  This could be a world record for a single post on an exercise.

Now I will talk about the physical YOGA aspect of Surya Namaskar. You will be amazed that this intricate and vast knowledge  is available in our Ayurveda books.

Yoga is NOT about twisting yourself like a pretzel to stretch and limber up. It had the amazing capability to boost your immunity to almost all diseases, and to help you to recover fast from existing ones. This works like magic, as it has everything to do with your body's lymph system.

Now let me digress-

Two years ago, I came back home on leave after a particularly torturous flight pattern from South America when I could NOT keep my legs up for nearly 2 days. I had difficulty in removing my boots when i reached home.

The next morning I found that both my legs were swollen , edema , as it is popularly known. At the first glance it looked like a simple case of lymph drainage problem. In which case I had to take care of it from a Lymph angle. When you sit still for a long time without moving, the lymph can't flow easily -- this is why you may experience swollen feet
Since I am not the type who jumps the gun, I waited for another 4 days. Gave my legs enough time to be rested at a high place with respect to my heart. The swelling was still the same. My wife got worried about my kidneys, as the kidney department beds of all Kerala hospitals are full, since the past 10 years .

So I told my wife, just show me the salt packet she used in cooking. It was a famous brand of Iodized salt. I just dumped the whole thing into the garbage and told my wife " let us go to the supermarket.  We need to buy "natural unrefined sea salt".  Never mind the spin of the manufacturers of this Iodized salt brand ".

I never got swollen feet after that. When there is too much Iodine in the body it upsets the Lymphatic system.

Main stream science and medicine has NOT caught up yet with the Lymphatic system. A good Lymph doctor can have one look at you, and tell you what is wrong with you. This science is so exact.

It is a shame to see middle aged women suffering from excessive bleeding, cramps and PMS.  In the West , due to the type of food they eat, women suffer needlessly from breast tumours and cancer. This category must pay special attention to this post. They have help in the form of an Ayurvedic Lymph drainage massage.

You will NOT appreciate the meaning of such a weird massage, unless you know the basics. Unfortunately your science books in school almost ignored this subject.

The lymphatic system in your body is a series of connected nodes, ducts and organs that play a vital part in your immune system.

The human arteries are like a two-lane highway bringing nutrients, oxygen and fluid to the body part. The vein is a one-lane highway taking away the used blood, and the lymphatic channels are the other one-lane highway draining away the lymph fluid.

Two lanes in together, but two out lanes separate out. Blood is responsible for collecting and distributing oxygen, nutrients and hormones to the entire body where lymph is responsible for collecting and removing waste products left behind in the tissues. Plasma leaks out of the capillaries to surround and bathe the body tissues. This then drains into the lymph vessels.

The circulatory system processes an average of 20 liters of blood per day.  Roughly 17 liters per day of that gets reabsorbed directly into the blood vessels. The primary function of the lymph system is to provide an accessory route for these excess 3 liters per day to get returned to the blood.

So colourless lymph is essentially recycled blood plasma. The biggest lymph vessel is the thoracic duct, which empties back into the blood circulation.  At the cellular level, the lymphatic system is a pathway through which fluid flows from the intercellular spaces into the blood.

The lymphatic system has vessels just like our circulatory system, but does not have a pump like the heart for the circulatory system . In order to clear the “lymph” (the clear extracellular fluid that is collected by the lymphatic vessels and filtered by the lymph nodes), the lymphatic system must be pumped manually.

Lymph is a clear fluid that travels through your body's arteries, circulates through your tissues to cleanse them and keep them firm, and then drains away through the separate lymphatic system.

Lymph nodes are the filters along the lymphatic system.  Their job is to filter out and trap bacteria, viruses, cancer cells, and other unwanted substances, and to make sure they are safely eliminated from the body.

Each cell is nourished by the nutrients, oxygen and proteins that flow across the walls of capillaries into the interstitial fluid. There is a dynamic balance between the forces that help those nutrients to first exit the capillaries, and then get reabsorbed back into the blood stream.

Proteins play a big part in this transfer because they have a tendency to draw water to themselves. This means that the proper amounts of protein on both sides of the capillary wall are vital to keep the tissues balanced. If there are too many proteins within the interstitial spaces, fluid will start to accumulate, causing edema. The lymph system’s role of removing proteins is vital to keeping edema down. If the lymph system becomes sluggish, edema can develop. This type of edema is called lymphostatic edema- or a high protein edema.

Other causes of edema can be a chemical imbalance in the body caused by liver disease, diabetes, or a variety of other ailments. This type of edema is called lymphodynamic edema, and requires other forms of therapy due to the fact that it is a chemical imbalance.

Below picture-- western women , can avoid breast cancer and tumors by knowing the nodes . and which way to massage. They wear tight bras, which restrict drainage.  Breast is loose flesh without skeletal ligaments and muscle , and hence cannot drain properly .

The lymphatic system, because of its physical proximity to many tissues of the body, is responsible for carrying cancerous cells between the various parts of the body in a process called metastasis. The intervening lymph nodes can trap the cancer cells. If they are not successful in destroying the cancer cells the nodes may become sites of secondary tumors.

Lymphatic blockages can result in a swelling at the lymphatic node junctions. This condition results in providing a breeding ground for viruses and pathogenic material.  The lymph system acts as a reservoir of infection, churning out billions of infected immune-system cells that eventually spill into the blood stream, where they travel to other parts of the body.  Up to to ten times as much virus may reside in the lymph system as in the blood.

Since there is no pump, the lymph movement relies on contraction of smooth muscle tissue lining the walls of lymph vessels. Movement of skeletal muscles is also important for driving lymph along the systems network of vessels to lymph nodes and from these to lymph ducts where the lymph tissue joins cardiovascular circulation. This is what the scientifically formulated Yoga positions do.

So lymph is basically the fluid and protein ( plasma ) that has been squeezed out of the blood. The lymph is drained from the tissue in microscopic blind-ended vessels called lymph capillaries. Lymphedema is the swelling caused by the accumulation of lymph fluid, which may occur if the lymphatic system is damaged or has malformations.  Enlarged lymph nodes may be caused by lack of sleep, imbalance and irregular meals, long-hour standing or seating, improper gestures, etc.

Lymph vessels run through the body in much the same way blood vessels do. The capillaries of the circulatory system leak the plasma and nutrients into the tissues of the body to feed the individual cells. Most of that fluid is not returned to the circulatory system, but rather stays in between the tissue layers as interstitial fluid.

This fluid is filtered into the lymph vessels and travels back toward the heart where it will be returned to the circulatory system. When the interstitial fluid enters the lymphatic system the fluid is called lymph. Lymph nodes lie in specific locations along the lymphatic vessels and perform vital functions for the body's immune system.

6000 years ago, Ayurveda and Yoga  realized that many lymph nodes are situated near the region around the joints. Humans have approximately 500-700 lymph nodes distributed throughout the body, with clusters found in the underarms, groin, neck, chest, and abdomen.

All lymph vessels lead to lymph nodes. Lymph nodes can be as small as the head of a pin, or as big as an olive . Half of the lymph nodes in the body, are  located in the abdomen, and many are in the neck.

The movements of the limbs help to act as a pump to move the lymph through the system. They are located in clusters around the knee, groin, elbows, shoulders and neck. Lymph nodes are also found in the central abdominal and chest area to assist with lymph drainage around the vital organs.

Every Yoga movement take this into account. This is why Yoga must not be self inflicted.  Because the lymph doesn't have a heart to pump it so good circulation of the lymphatic system depends on getting proper stretching exercise and yogic inverted postures which use gravity.

Human lymph nodes are bean-shaped and range in size from a few millimeters to about 1–2 cm in their normal state.

Lymph nodes can become swollen for several reasons. When an infection invades the body, more white blood cells can flood into the lymph nodes to fight the antigen. If there is inflammation in the area of the lymph node, the inflamed cells can enter the node and cause it to swell.

Malignant cancer cells can infiltrate the node, causing it to expand.  Lymphoma and leukemia also can lead to swollen nodes, caused by the multiplication of cancerous lymphocytes.

Fats are evacuated through lymphatic vessels. These vessels are located in virtually every area of the body where fats may accumulate. The functioning of the immune system is stimulated through increased lymph flow.

The additional flow carries more antigens to the lymph nodes, thereby increasing antibody/antigen contact. This has been found to help with chronic or subacute inflammatory processes -- chronic fatigue syndrome, autoimmune disease, bronchitis, sinusitis, amygdalitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis, arthritis, acne and eczema.

When the lymphatic system becomes blocked or begins working slowly then it effects all of the body. All of the toxins that your body will normally throw away will then be soaked into other organs and can cause other harmful health conditions, including obesity.

Fats in dairy, hydrogenated vegetable fats and fatty meats can slow the flow of the lymphatic waste system forcing the body to absorb these fats and toxins resulting in obesity, cellulite and disease.

The Ayurvedic lymphatic drainage massage works with the filtering and cleaning of the lymph nodes, starting at the arms and legs and moving towards the lymph nodes.  The lymph nodes are gently stimulated, encouraging them to discharge their contents throughout the lymphatic network, facilitating the removal of lymphatic waste from the body.

Ayurvedic Lymphatic drainage massage is a therapeutic massage treatment. The massage uses very light pressure and long, gentle, rhythmic strokes to increase lymphatic flow, with the aim of getting rid of toxins in your body. The amazing paradox is that such a superficial massage technique targetting just under the skin has such a deep impact.

Lymphatic drainage massage must take place in a warm room, as warmth is an important factor in increasing lymphatic flow.

The lymph flow has to go towards the heart.  When I did my lymph drainage Ayurvedic massage, the routine was one hour daily for 10 days.  Three people labored on me with nav dhanya - 9 different types of broken grains and pulses of different hardness and sizes..

The shallow abrasive dry grain massage causes the outer layer of skin slough off.  Initially you feel as if sand is being rubbed on the skin. It uproots all the body , arm , leg , hair too, as the long superficial stroke is mostly against the lay if the hair. If you do NOT use dry grain powder, you have to use a brush with bristles.

The day you go for the massage eat only fruits, and drink lot of water. After the massage drink lot of water again.

See picture above-- a lot of  you have got yourself a HARD massage from IGNORANT massues and permanently damaged the non-return valves of your lymph nodes. Think back --when did you do allow a such a spurious massage on your back torso and shoulders.

It gently stimulates blood flow to the skin through the smaller capillaries in the skin's deeper layers. The increased blood flow both promotes skin renewal and supports proper elimination and detoxification.

Approximately 70% are superficial lymphatic capillaries located  just under, the skin. The remaining 30%, which are known as deep lymphatic capillaries, surround most of the body’s organs. The deep ones can be stimulated only by Yoga. Like veins, the lymphatic vessels, which are known as lymphangions, have one-way valves to prevent any backward flow.
The lymphatic system drainage is organized into two separate, and very unequal drainage areas. The right drainage area clears the right arm and chest. The left drainage area clears all of the other areas of the body including both legs, the lower trunk upper left of the chest, and the left arm.

Lymph vessels make an intimate meshwork that covers every inch of your skin, and surrounds each organ in great detail.  By performing lymphatic drainage massage correctly, we can stimulate the opening of the initial lymphatic and increase the volume of lymph flow by as much as 20 times. But if  you push too hard, you collapse the initial lymphatic, diminishing the lymph flow.

Excessive pressure can even break the filaments that hold the initial lymphatic in place. This is one reason that deep styles of massage are contraindicated in areas of edema. Luckily if deep pressure has broken any filaments, they usually reform within 48 hours. Be careful, as Lymph nodes that has been damaged or destroyed, does not regenerate.

Calendula, also known Calendula officinalis, is an herb that may be helpful in improving your lymphatic drainage.. The flowers of the plant are used for medicinal purposes, including stimulating lymphatic drainage.  Calendula is also a lymphagogue, or a substance that supports your lymphatic organs and stimulates your lymph system.

Lymphatic drainage massage ( use sesame or virgin coconut oil ) has a positive effect on the following conditions:
Fluid retention – puffy ankles, legs, eyes, and abdomen.
Arthritis and rheumatism.
Assistance for migraine, headaches, and MS
Constipation and digestive disorders.
Sinusitis and hayfever.
Hormonal imbalance.
Recurring infections – colds, flu, ear or chest.
Skin disorders – acne, scleroderma, eczema and psoriasis.
Wearing a tight compression garment during yoga exercise also provides resistance to further stimulate the lymph flow. This acts like wringing a wet towel. Like body inversions and head stand exercises, twists offer your body new ways to remove toxins and flush important lymph around the entire torso.

Yogic asanas to aid lymph flow includes neck rotation, shoulder shrugs, ankle pumps, leg slides, shoulder blade squeezes etc. Yoga diaphragmatic breathing and many yoga positions open up the chest cavity, while poses like shoulder stands, enlist gravity to help lymph fluid get where it is supposed to go.

Below video--Suryanamaskar for deep Lymph node drainage.  Surya namaskar can increase lymph flow 20 fold.  Two-thirds of the lymph is produces in the liver and intestines.

Because the lymphatic system is a closed pressure system and has one-way valves that keep lymph moving towards the heart, when one turns upside down like in Shirshasan , the entire lymphatic system is stimulated, thus strengthening your immune system.

Lymph fluid is relieved from the legs and ankles and with regular practice prevents the buildup of fluid in the legs and feet.  Usually gravity is pulling us down and compressing our bodies, yet when we do inversions this process is completely reversed. So instead of working against us, gravity is working for us by decompressing our bodies and reversing the flow of the lymphatic system, which does NOT have a pump.

Yoga asanasas help to shift Lymph fluids around your body in ways that you would not ordinarily be able to achieve in daily life .

Inverted yoga poses are particularly beneficial to the white collar office workers who have occupations that require prolonged sitting still . These work positions increase the occurrence of fluid build up in the blood vessels and lymphatic channels of the legs. With light yoga inversions, swelling, discomfort and other chronic conditions can be alleviated.

Recapitulation: Lymph drainage massage can increase the flow of lymph by as much as 20 times! A normal lymphatic flow is about 4 ounces of lymph per hour. This means that with Manual Lymphatic Drainage the flow can be increased to as much as 80 ounces per hour!  All by superficial skin massage gently stimulating the lymph nodes located just below the surface of the skin. The deeper nodes can be stimulated only by Yoga exercises.

Gentle lymphaticsurface  massage aids your weight loss , but not by hard massaging away body fat.

Warning: If there is an infection anywhere in the body, lymphatic drainage cannot be done, as it will spread the infection throughout the body.

Finally surface lymph drainage massage and yoga asana deep lymph fluid channeling if done properly can cause obese people to lose weight and dimpled cellulite--it is more or less a miracle. .

Move only the surface of the skin.  Avoid engaging the muscles. The fluid is moved into the lymph nodes by lightly stretching the skin in specific directions.

Just by de-congesting lymph nodes, and getting the body rid of lipomas or fibroadenomas?

Yoga has timings. You cannot get up at midnight and start doing yoga. The ancient Vedic seers knew this 6000 years ago.

Magnesium and potassium live normally within the human cell, and sodium and calcium are found outside. During the day sodium sneaks into the cell, taking a hydrogen ion with it, which is acidifying.  In order to buffer this acidity, which is toxic to the cell, calcium also moves in.  This has the effect of displacing potassium ( by sodium) and magnesium ( by calcium ) which is pushed out of the cell.  At night the opposite takes place and potassium and magnesium move back into the cell, pushing out the calcium and sodium, which takes the hydrogen ion with it. This has the effect of cleansing the cell, so you should wake up bright and refreshed.

The moon has an affinity for sodium.

How many of you know that the moon leaves a sodium trail thousands of miles long?

  1. Captain,

Thanks a ton for this post. You have made it crystal clear why all ancient practices of physical well being speak of relaxing and comfortable stretching while doing the asanas.

Today, western medicine has completely ruined our bodies as it is a very incomplete science. 2 years back when i had done my stool tests, i realised something called mucous which is a part of our stools, and wanted to know more. That is when i started studying Ayurvedic concepts slowly and steadily.

Alongside, i also tried to understand the principles of Chinese medicine. Realised that we do not pay attention to the key organs of our body, like kidneys, spleen, liver. The modern medical practices might help us feel good by eliminating the surface symptoms, but deep inside, they act as slow killers.

I liken this to the following analogy. There is water dripping from the roof of a house. The reason is the tank on top is leaking. Modern medicine believes in investing in water proofing the roof, rather than working on the core issue. And the core issue remaining unfixed, slowly and steadily will ruin the whole house.

A concept of Ayurveda that i will always keep in mind is the power of the body to heal itself. The way we can help the body heal itself with diet, the right attitude and other supplementary items is the most amazing one i feel.

As is clear, the focus today is superficial and not deep. We want shape, muscles, good hair. The hair is falling because there is an issue in the digestive system. This can be fixed by fasting, changing the diet - things that actually will save money. But instead one spends thousands of rupees on medical consultations, tonics etc. Goes on to indicate that the ones with knowhow really want to exploit the ordinary public. (Actually it is debatable whether most of our doctors know anything at all!)

And the public is so busy in IPL and Sunny Leone that it has no time to enlighten itself...;)

  2. Good one Ajimamen!!!Yoga everyday;keeps the doctor away :)
I would like to know if Homeopathic treatment is the safest way of medication. Anika & myself are purely into Homeopathy & she who earlier used to catch the common cold or a flu every 2 weeks is now off the doc past 6 months...wonder if its the homeo which is doing the trick or her immunity system!!! How safe is biochem medicines.Ny idea? Can u pls keep my post private?

    1. hi anu,

if homeopathy works for you --it is good.

allopathy has its side effects. when you have an anti-biotic it kills good bacteria as well as bad bacteria.

finally it is human body which cures itself.

    @ajit ji, @anjana,

Read this blog "" which also offers a '2ndlook' ( just like this blog)
read the comments section also (-"3. Homeopathy has an extremely small theoretical base – and strangely, a huge, empirical base.")

there is an unstated link India-(Brutishers)-(Hessian soldiers)-Germany. In fact, Captain in some of his other blogs have detailed this link beautifully.
I will add that Friedrich Maximilian Muller or Max Muller ( popular version) in his biography tells us of this physician Samuel Hahnemann. According to him, he was treated in leipzig for a severe headache by hahnemann with so called homeopathy, but did not work for him in the long run. - rgds

  5. Dear Capt.,

even i wud like to share my experience. i had hit on my right knee by a sharp edge of my work desk.

i tried with allopathy doctor who prescribed calcium tabs/ vitamin D injections and physio therapy., which made things worse..i was unable to walk freely. in the pharmacy i noted same medicines prescribed to all patients by the ortho doctor.

then i settled with yoga which gave lot of relief and i was able recover in a year time and with oil application murivenna and pinda thailam mixed daily.

i keep my yoga schedules very prompt daily.

while reading ur post feel there should be injury may be in lymphnode or related tissue which could have aggravated by improper treatment.

  9. Hello Captain,
I did not understand what you mean here.. " This is why Yoga must not be self inflicted." .. Should we not do yoga by ourselves?
I see ramdev baba yoga videos and try to follow them. Please advice.

    1. hi sri,

i have seen the ignorant western yoga teachers holding night sessions.

certain yoga cannot be done when you are about to go to sleep.

modern medicine will NEVER understand these theories, put don on paper by seers 6000 years ago.

at the end of this post i have put a para in blue-- read it again. something about who sneaks into a cell ( you body has more than 100 trillions of it ) and chucks out whom.

  11. Is it ok to do yoga when you have an irritated/swollen/painful lymph node? Mine is in my neck (left side), and is swelling inward (into my throat), but is not visible from the outside. It hurts to swallow. Thank you!

    1. hi s,

Swollen lymph nodes can become inflamed and cause pain. They happen due to exposure a bacteria or virus.

Treatment of swollen lymph nodes involves treating the underlying cause—and hence you must see a doctor and take his advise..

Probably it could be an abcess . The doctor will take blood tests , X Ray and probably he may tell you to do a biopsy.

  14. Also regarding salt we were using iodized salt for ages. Recently I switched to sea salt iodized as my wife has hypothyroidism and from Ayurvedic post I gather iodized is better with thyroid issues. What do u suggest

    1. hi iat,

In your entire life time your body just needs less than a tea spoon of iodine to ensure good health.

But , your body lacks the ability to store iodine .This means you must make consume a little every day to stay in tip top condition

Unhealthy chemical processes are involved in the creation of iodized salt. Iodized salt sometimes worsens symptoms in persons with pre-existing conditions like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

Iodine added to table salt evaporates in a matter of days when it is exposed to air.

You can get NATURAL iodine from eggs, fish, beans, shrimp, milk, potatoes etc.

Over consumption of iodine can be as toxic and just as damaging as a deficiency.

Like under-consumption, too much iodine prevents proper production of thyroid hormones leading to goiter. Increased iodine intake, especially in CHEMICAL supplement form, increases the autoimmune attack on the thyroid.

Most iodine deficiency problems are created by bromine.

Bromines are endocrine disruptors, as they compete for the same receptors that are used to capture iodine.

If you are exposed to a lot of bromine, your body will not hold on to the iodine that it needs. And iodine affects every tissue in your body -- not just your thyroid.

Imported fruits like strawberries you get in FDI in retail stores are sprayed with methyl bromide. Flours often contain a "dough conditioner" called potassium bromate.

Many citrus based soft drinks, mountain dew , gatorade etc have BVO-- brominated vegetable oils .

When you ingest bromine, it displaces iodine, and this iodine deficiency leads to an increased risk for cancer of the breast, thyroid gland, ovary and prostate -- cancers that we see at alarmingly high rates today.

Have you notices the increased prostrate gland problem in India-- all created by FOREIGN MAAL in fancy western stores? this disease never existed in india.

It is a fu#kin' lie that if we eat too much salt you will die.

when you eat more salt and your body retains water to maintain a stable concentration of sodium in your blood.

This is why eating salty food tends to make us thirsty: we drink more-- to retain water.

The result can be a TEMPORARY increase in blood pressure, which will persist until your kidneys eliminate both salt and water.

A low salt diet on the contrary increase your risk of death--

Did you know that the majority of the sodium you eat -as much as 75% comes from packages of processed, prepared foods ?-- thanks to FDI in multibrand retail !!

      follow your doctor's advise .

      capt ajit vadakayil

  15. Thanks for educating us time and again.

Well her doctor wants to continue with medication. However considering long time effect we want natural/ herbal remedy to control thyroid.

Typically our salt intake is low.. Obviously we believed in propaganda and have trained our taste buds to reject too salty foods.

The choices I have here are table salt, iodized table salt, sea salt, iodized sea salt

In addition I can buy Himalayan pink salt, senda lavana, bp salt

I read somewhere eating radish, kale, sea weed, lotus root and water cress is good for hypothyroidism

    Please advise. Thank you

    1. hi iat,

TSH which is made by the pitutiary gland , is a thyroid stimulating hormone which regulates production of thyroid hormones.

If levels of these hormones fall, the pituitary releases TSH to simulate the thyroid gland to produce more.

High levels of TSH is a sign of underactivity of the thyroid (hypothyroidism).

Women after menopause are at greater risk than men.

Symptoms include increasing fatigue , obesity, hair loss, brittle nails , depression, getting irritated for no rhyme of reason, muscle aches, memory loss etc.

Use of sea salt or lack of iodine does not cause elevated TSH. read this line twice.

Signs of iodine deficiency frequently include an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter).

If you family is NOT under nourished there is NEVER a problem with lack of iodine— read this line twice.

The most common cause is an autoimmune condition known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

It involves immune-related inflammation of the gland, which interferes with production of thyroid hormones.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis occurs when the immune system targets the thyroid gland.

Because this attack interferes with the production of vital hormones that regulate metabolism, it often results in thyroid deficiency (hypothyroidism) .

Autoimmune diseases tend to flare up and subside in response to emotional ups and downs.

Replace animal protein as much as possible with plant protein.

Eliminate A1 cow's milk and all cow's milk products, substituting other calcium sources.

Eat more fruits and vegetables regularly and make sure that they are organically grown and NOT GM.

      Use virgin coconut oil.

      Have turmeric in curry.

      Do pranayama.

    Hi Captain

what is the actual cause of breast cancer.the other day in news it was said that coastal andhra pradesh is also having more and more women suffering from breast cancer. Is it anything to do with lifestyle, religion, region, food habits? Why certain places are getting affected with breast cancer?

    hi sd,

well i decided to grab the bull by the bal#s and put a comment in TOI e paper itself--

    1) do not wear under wired bras .

    2) do NOT shave your armpits and spray anti-perspirants which are aluminium based , laced with PARABEN which mimic estrogen. aluminium plugs the sweat duct -- this causes lymph node problems .

most breast cancers develop in the upper outer quadrant of the breast because that area is closest to the lymph nodes exposed to antiperspirants .

parabens are absorbed through the skin . blocked lymph nodes provide breeding ground for viruses .

    3) stop consuming GM soya bean products which is a source of phytoestrogen, and mimics regular estrogen in your body .

    4) if you had your first periods before the age of 11 , you are at risk of breast cancer. stop drinking A1 toxic HUMPLESS cow milk which contain phyto oestrogens .

    5) do not cook in any veg oil which give free radicals at high heat indian style cooking. virgin coconut oil is the best. such women must avoid working night shifts prior to the first pregnancy .
    6) breast feed babies for MINIMUM 6 months- read this twice .

    7) use condoms to FU#K --do NOT use birth control pills which contain the SAME type of synthetic hormones -- estrogen and progestin .

    8) avoid barbecue cooking and grills- charcoal or flame-broiled meat is linked with increased breast cancer risk .

    9) start eating turmeric laden indian curries-- JAASTI GORA MAT BEN -- AAKHIR BEHENJI TURNED MOD HI HAI TUM .

    10) know how to give yourself a lymph node massage for your dang breasts .

  20. Captain. I am eagerly waiting for your reply and advise on my above query, if possible and if time permits would also want to know of any remedies for keloids, my husband has got it on his ear lobe and arm.

    1. Hi l,

keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue that develops around a wound. there are no hair follicles or sweat glands within the scar.

if your keloid is NOT bothering you , leave it alone -- just make sure you do NOT have any skin injuries.

some times it can be in a highly visible area, or it itches or is tender, or if it is on a joint which restricts movement, or it is tending to migrate to other areas ---. in which case , you can manage it by treatment.

unlike usual scars, keloids do not subside over time. when it comes to keloids, prevention is crucial.

cortisone injections --injections are safe (very little steroid gets into the bloodstream) and usually help flatten keloids

freezing keloids with liquid nitrogen may flatten them but often darkens the site of treatment.

laser can be effective at flattening keloids and making them look less red. treatment is safe and not very painful, but several treatment sessions may be needed.

there are some ayurvedic treatments available-- NOT very effective.

probably you can try a vadakayil concoction of small indian onion juice , vitamin E sesame oil with lemon juice -- and apply a pressure pad dressing.

we were down with dengue fever few months back with platelet dropping so we were having tender papaya juice which was very effective.. we noticed that the keloid growth on the ear lobe had decreased a little in size.. v are wondering if we can start off to try taking the papaya leaf juice and watch if it helps. can i know your suggestions please...
And thanks a lot for your tip about the kunju ulli, sesame oil and lemon juice. will definitely try it.can i please know the quantity of each ingredient and also when is the best time of day to do it, how many times a day.

  24. Sirji, that was an indeed very good blog of yours.

I'm 31 years almost 6 feets tall but my voice is very thin. It sounds like a female. Any yoga tips for this?

    1. hi pk,

The male voice box is typically different from a female voice box in several ways. A man's vocal cords, is longer, thicker and less tense. Think of the strings on a guitar -- the lower notes are made by heavier strings while the thinner strings produce higher notes.

Tighten or loosen those strings and the pitch will rise or fall.

The introduction of testosterone into the body will naturally alter the muscularity of the body and bring the feminine pitch down into vocal range associated with a man.

The larynx (or voice box) and vocal cord tissues do not fully mature until late teenage years. Hormone-related changes during adolescence are particularly noticeable among boys.
The general surgical procedures to correct voice problems are to thicken vocal cords or to adjust their tension. Just as making the string on a musical instrument tighter and tighter causes its pitch to rise, changing the tension of the vocal cords changes the pitch of the voice.

Vocal training is the way to go to naturally lower your voice by stretching out the vocal cords. Suggest you do NOT go for surgery and hormones .

Longer vocal cords produce deeper registers, so if you can stretch your vocal cords with practice, vocal training could be a permanent fix.

  25. Thank You very much sirji. I will definitely practice as you instructed -nay- commanded.

Again from Dec 2013, I am suffering from same lymp nodes, the fluid collect & burst in one week. I am taking catergory -2 of Anti TB medicine but same issue. Kindly suggest as Doctor haven't any idea instead of TB. I have never sick with symptoms of TB.

    Please suggest.

    1. hi r,

The lymph nodes act like a military checkpoint. When bacteria, viruses and abnormal or diseased cells pass through the lymph channels they are stopped at the node.

When faced with infection or illness, the lymph nodes accumulate the debris of the disease such as bacteria, and dead or diseased cells. Within the capsule, lymph nodes contain certain kinds of immune cells.

These cells are mainly lymphocytes, which produce proteins that capture and fight viruses and other microbes, and macrophages, which destroy and remove the captured material.

Lymph nodes are usually not visible or palpable (felt by touching), unless they are swollen or enlarged for some reason. Deeper lymph nodes could be seen on imaging studies, such as CT scan (computed tomography), of different parts of the body.

The lymph nodes in the neck can even become swollen in response to an upper respiratory infection, like the common cold.

Swollen lymph nodes on the side of the neck or under jaw are the most common. They may represent an infection around that area, such as a tooth infection or abscess, throat infection, viral illness, or upper respiratory infection. Most of the causes of swollen lymph nodes in this area are benign (non cancerious).

Swollen lymph nodes behind the ear may correspond to an infection around the scalp or possibly a conjunctival (eye) infection. The most common cause of scalp lylmph nodes are skin conditions affecting the scalp, such as dandruff (sebhorrheic dermatitis).

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious bacterial infection, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that involves the lungs. It may spread to other organs. One of the symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis is swollen or tender lymph nodes in the neck or other areas. Although it doesn’t show any symptoms initially, later stages are characterized by cough (usually with mucus and coughing up blood), excessive sweating at night, fatigue, fever, and weight loss.
Treatment involves a combination of many drugs (usually four drugs)

Mononucleosis is a viral infection. It is more common in older teenagers and young adults.

In addition to a severe throat and fatigue, its symptoms often include weakness, aches, dizziness, enlarged spleen and swollen lymph nodes in the neck.

There’s no specific therapy available to treat infectious mononucleosis. Antibiotics don’t work against such viral infections. So, treatment mainly involves bed rest and drinking plenty of fluids

There is no specific treatment for swollen lymph nodes. Generally, the underlying cause needs to be treated, which may result in the resolution of the swollen lymph node.

Treating an infection causing the swollen lymph node, for example, will result in the lymph node swelling to subside. If the swollen lymph node is due to a cancer of the lymph node (lymphoma), then the swelling will shrink after treating the lymphoma.

If cancer is suspected, a biopsy may be done to confirm the diagnosis.

Any swollen lymph nodes that don't go away or return to normal size over about a month should be checked by your doctor. Lymph nodes may remain swollen or firm long after an initial infection is gone.

Lymph glands are normally pea-sized. They can swell to the size of a marble .

Tubercular lymph nodes can start an abscess as large as an egg.

Throat infections, tonsillitis, the common cold and tooth-related infections may cause lymph glands in the neck to swell.

Scalp skin conditions or even head lice may cause the lymph glands at the back of the head to swell.

Skin infections of the arm may cause lymph glands in the armpit to swell.

Infections of the leg or genitals, or nappy rash, may cause lymph glands in the groin to swell.

Viral infections such as flu (influenza), chickenpox or glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis) affect the whole body. You may then develop swollen lymph glands in various parts of the body such as the neck, armpit and groins.

As a rule, swollen lymph glands due to cancers, lymphomas and leukaemias develop more slowly than those due to infections. They also tend to be painless at first.

Swollen lymph glands are like a marker of various conditions, all with different outlooks and treatments. So, for example, the common cause is due to a viral infection. In this case no specific treatment may be advised and the lymph glands will normally go back to normal after a week or so. Swollen lymph nodes can be caused by infections such as cold and flu, abscessed or impacted tooth, gum disease, mouth sores, ear infections, skin infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.

However, swollen lymph glands caused by a cancer, lymphoma or leukaemia may need extensive treatment.

What you had before was tuberculous lymphadenitis, which y affects nodes in the neck under the ear.

A TB infection of the lungs is known as pulmonary TB.

TB can occur outside the lungs, which is known as extrapulmonary TB.
Extrapulmonary TB is more common in people with a weakened immune system,.

You are also more likely to develop extrapulmonary TB if you have previously been infected with TB but haven't had any symptoms (a latent TB infection).

    Dear Capt.,

Thank you for your reply. It was helpful.
Your time answering and letting know the details are much appreciated sir.

More than the pros & cons of eating or not eating beef, I was overwhelmed by the thought of not eating beef only because of the value of Gau mata (cows) we associate with Santan Dharma.

Sir - People are increasingly talking about Colon Therapy these days and the benefits/risks associated with it. It appears similar, not exactly same, to the Nauli Kriya described in Yoga. While approaching Nauli Kriya expertise takes lots of practice and patience, seems we can achieve the same results through colon therapies.

Sir - just wanted to understand if colon therapies are okay to be tried once and what are the risks if any?

    hi s,

my grandmother's brother used to do nauli kriya.

i remember going to his house with my wife , and at the age of 97 he was busy in the back yard digging a trench with a kaikot ( spade ).

so we have to retrieve a property document from him--and he was NOT able to read properly.

so i told him, why dont you get your specs changed.

at that time his daughter butted in--

she said that a week ago she took him to the eye doctor. he made him read the chart .

after that the eye specialist asked him what his age is.

when he said 97, the doctor got pissed off.

    he spAke--

when he did NAULI KRIYA his stomach from ribs to groin would be like a thin pillar column and he sued to swish it around for good measure. he started kalari at the age of 6.

baba ramdev does it too -- but only 20% of what my grand uncle could do.

so when i asked him to do a nauli for me again , just for good ole times-- -- he said he has NOT done it since he crossed 90.

well well what do they know--

this kriya tones and regenerates your liver, kidney, pancreas etc. it invigorates and stimulating the abdominal viscera and the gastro-intestinal system. It helps in toxic excretion. It massages the lymph nodes.

when you have a healthy digestive system and a healthy vagus nerve you live long.

on a spiritual level Nauli Kriya stimulates and purifies manipura charka, the storehouse of prana.

The first step to learn how to raise the Kundalini is to learn this-- see i have just let out a secret.

OK--time to let out another secret.

Homosexuality can be cured by Yoga -- this is a spring board to this process of DNA repair via hormone release ..

When the rectus abdominal muscles are rotated from left to right, it is called dakshina nauli.

When the rectus abdominal muscles are rotated from right to left, it is called vama nauli.

When the muscles are pulled together and the middle group of muscles protrude, it is called madhyama nauli

Each has its own uses in releasing blockages.

  28. Respected sir,

Need your kind advise please.I have two swollen lymph nodes one each in an underarm. They start swelling and expanding about 7 to 10 days before periods. The onset coincides with amavasai for me. From the onset, the swelling decreases and pain usually subsides immediately. I am scared.

We are vegetarians, eat traditionally cooked food. I prepare the main meals so I control salt to nominal levels.
I use non aluminum based deo occasionally or just a dab of eo sometimes.
I want to do yoga and surya namaskaram which I had learnt and was once a practitioner. This is something I can't kick start again into my routine. There is some energy or intention block that I just can't overcome.
Tests taken when I was 17 indicated that I have decreased AdH secretion. I was on medication called larvos and then I preferred to stop it at around 24. I drink about 8 to 10 l of water through night and day. I am usually active and never enervated.

Please can you describe a home remedy/ common sense remedy/ lifestyle alteration for the underarm lymph node problem? I am very very wary of going for allopathy based checkups for this issue. After I try whatever you many say, and if it still persists, then I will go (I assume you will ask me to go check). I am ok to be patient about the curing timelines.

    1. hi bg,

First – you MUST consult your doctor, who will give an opinion after physical examination or even a biopsy..

If the lymph mode swells up under the armpit 8 days before periods and subsides the day you get your periods , then it is nothing to worry about— as these are due to hormonal changes.

It is normal to have swelling in breast area or armpit for some people.

Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) is produced by an area of the brain called the hypothalamus. The hormone is stored in and released by the pituitary gland. ADH controls how your body releases and conserves water.
When ADH (also called vasopressin) is produced somewhere other than the hypothalamus, the condition is called syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone
The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion or SIADH is characterized by excessive release of antidiuretic hormone from the posterior pituitary gland or another source.
The result is often dilutional hyponatremia in which the sodium remains normal but total body fluid increases.
In addition to making it harder for your body to release water, SIADH can result in lowered levels of electrolytes like sodium. Early symptoms may be mild and include cramping and nausea. In severe cases, SIADH can cause confusion, seizures, and coma. Treatment usually begins with limiting fluid intake to prevent further buildup. Additional treatment will depend on the cause.
Another name for the syndrome is “ectopic ADH secretion.”
SIADH makes it difficult for your body to get rid of excess water. This causes a buildup of fluids as well as abnormally low sodium levels, a condition known as hyponatremia.
Symptoms may be mild and vague at first, but tend to build. Severe cases may involve these symptoms:
      irritability and restlessness
      loss of appetite
      nausea and vomiting
      muscle weakness
SIADH is often one of the first symptoms of lung cancer.
SIADH can also be caused by tumors of the head or neck. Other triggers for SIADH include:
      diseased or damaged hypothalamus
      encephalitis (inflammation of the brain)
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) (immune system disorder)
      heart failure
      lung disease
meningitis (inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord)
      trauma to the head
The first line of treatment is to limit fluid intake to avoid further buildup. Medications may include those that can reduce fluid retention, such as furosemide (Lasix), and those that can inhibit ADH, like demeclocycline.

  29. hi mr,

"simple problem" reminds me of arnab goswami who has a "simple question".

I am familiar with your problem. i had a muslim engine room motor man who would come to me with abscess in the groin.

one day i got pissed off with this publc hair shaving man, as he was losing work hours -- he insisted that Koran does NOT allow more than 40 days growth of pubic hair (makruh )

so i told him -- either you follow the captain and use scissors -- or you follow Istihdaad / fitrah of islam and use a razor -- take your pick.

Follicles can become infected if the hair within the follicle is trapped and unable to break through the skin, as can happen after shaving. Trapped hair follicles are commonly called ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs can set the stage for an infection. Abscesses that are located on or in a hair follicle will often contain this ingrown hair.

    now let me digress-
Sunan al-Fitrah, practice of removing the pubic hair has nothing to do with Koran. Even circumcision has nothing to do with Koran. In Koran Allah tells to follow the Koran alone.

    back to subject--

Abscesses are caused by obstruction of oil (sebaceous) glands or sweat glands, inflammation of hair follicles, or minor breaks and punctures of the skin. Germs get under the skin or into these glands, which causes an inflammatory response as your body's defenses try to kill these germs.

When bacteria enter your body, your immune system tries to fight the infection by sending white blood cells to the affected area. As the white blood cells attack the bacteria, it causes inflammation (swelling) and the death of nearby tissue, leading to the formation of a cavity.
The cavity fills with pus to form the abscess. The pus contains a mixture of dead tissue, white blood cells and bacteria. The abscess may get larger and more painful as the infection continues and more pus is produced.

when you wife gets angry with you she can taunt you by calling you Staphylococcus aureus . This is a type of bacterium found on the surface of healthy skin, particularly in moist, damp areas such as armpits and groins. It can cause skin abscesses and boils.

Some of this SA bacteria can produce a poisonous substance called Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), which kills the white cells, causing the body to make more white cells to continue to fight the infection. PVL-positive strains of bacteria are more likely to cause groin abscesses.
Abscesses can form if a sebaceous gland (oil gland) or a sweat gland in your skin becomes blocked.
Boils develop as the result of bacteria entering the root of a hair on your skin.
Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been a common cause of skin abscesses in recent years

Things that increase the likelihood of an abscess developing include:
Tight compress trauma to a specific area of the body
    a weakened immune system
any material getting into the body
a drainage system in the body becoming blocked
a build-up of fluid in the tissues of the body
a haematoma (collection of blood outside a blood vessel)
a PVL-positive strain of bacteria (see above)
    Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a rare inflammatory skin disease that can cause painful abscesses to appear in the armpits and groin.

It is a chronic (long-term) disease that often begins between ages 20-40. It is also more common in females.

The condition is caused by pores of the apocrine glands (found in the armpits and groin) becoming blocked.

The infection can spread to the surrounding areas of your skin (cellulitis). You may feel unwell and have a fever.

You are more likely to get a skin abscess if you are obese, or have a skin condition or diabetes

Pus is a collection of white blood cells leukocytes, bacteria, and proteins is known as pus. Finally, the pus "forms a head," which can be surgically opened or spontaneously drain out through the surface of the skin. Boils themselves are not contagious, but the bacteria that cause boils are.

The primary home remedy for most boils is heat application, usually with hot soaks or hot packs. Heat application increases the circulation to the area and allows the body to better fight off the infection by bringing antibodies and white blood cells to the site of infection.

Antibiotics are often used to eliminate any accompanying bacterial infection, especially if there is an infection of the surrounding skin. However, antibiotics are not needed in every situation. In fact, antibiotics have difficulty penetrating the outer wall of an abscess well and often will not cure an abscess without additional surgical drainage. While boils typically resolve on their own and have an excellent prognosis.

Complications of a boil are rare and are more likely to occur in people with suppressed immune systems.

Good hygiene and the regular use of antibacterial soaps can help to prevent bacteria from building up on the skin. This can reduce the chance for the hair follicles to become infected and prevent the formation of boils .

The term carbuncle is typically used to represent a larger abscess that involves a group of hair follicles and involves a larger area than a furuncle. A carbuncle can form a hardened lump that can be felt in the skin. The condition of having chronic, recurring boils is referred to as furunculosis or carbunculosis.

Pilonidal cyst is a unique kind of abscess that occurs in the crease of the buttocks. Pilonidal cysts often begin as tiny areas of infection in the base of the area of skin from which hair grows (the hair follicle). With irritation from direct pressure, over time the inflamed area enlarges to become a firm, painful, and tender nodule that makes it difficult to sit without discomfort. These PC between the crack of the ass usually form after long trips that involve prolonged sitting. These almost always require medical treatment, including drainage and packing (putting gauze in the opened abscess to assure it continues to drain).

People with weakened immune systems get certain abscesses more often. This is because the body has a decreased ability to ward off infections.

Do not attempt to drain the abscess by pressing on it. This can push the infected material into the deeper tissues.. the infection spreads into deeper tissue, you may develop a fever and begin to feel ill. Do not stick a needle into the abscess center because you may injure an underlying blood vessel or cause the infection to spread.

If you need pain relief, you can take over-the-counter painkillers or ibuprofen. Antibiotics alone can be inadequate in treating abscesses.

Wear loose white cotton underwear in summer , with loose cotton pants for hawa hawaii effect .

Common sites for abscesses under the skin include the armpit and the groin. These two areas have a large number of lymph glands that are responsible for fighting infection.

    hi sf,

The west puts pictures of Naga sadhus at Kumbh mela , as covered with ash. Yes, ash it is – but it is volcanic ash—NOT fire place ash.

    This is NOT pagan superstition.

Ayurveda observed wild animals eating Bentonite clay ( Multani Mitti ) to remove poisons from their systems or during times of illness ( heavy metals, impurities, and chemicals).

Bentonite clay is highly effective at killing MRSA as well as Salmonella, E.Coli and others.

The clay kills the infection, it and the bacteria is unable to develop a resistance to it as it does with antibiotics.

This clay has a very fine, velveteen feel and is odorless and non-staining—and is basically aged volcanic ash.

Bentonite Clay is a unique clay due to its ability to produce an ELECTRIC STATIC CHARGE when hydrated and beaten into a slurry.

This clay a strong NEGATIVE CHARGE which bonds to the positive charge in many toxins.

Bentonite also helps get OXYGEN to cells as it pulls excess hydrogen and allows the cells to replace it with oxygen instead.

It is used as facial packs to prevent acne and to suck out oil and parasites from skin pores. You feel nice and cool.

It has an alkalizing effect on the body and when taken correctly, it can help balance gut bacteria.

It can neutralize digestive disturbances like acid reflux, constipation, bloating, gas, vomiting and diarrhea etc.
Healing clays like Bentonite have a high concentration of minerals including silica, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, and potassium.

    Pranam Captain,
You say that we are approaching Dwapara Yuga very soon.
But Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev says that we will enter Treta Yuga on 2082AD. We are already on the verge of ending Dwapara Yuga.

    Please watch this video :
He says the cycle of Yugas goes like this :
    Sat Yuga : 5184 Years
    Treta Yuga : 3888 Years
    Dwapara Yuga : 2592 Years
    Kali Yuga : 1296 Years
Total : 12960 Years for half a cycle. or 25920 Years for Full cycle.
    1 Cycle : Satyuga+Treta+Dwapara+Kali+Kali+Dwapara+Treta+SatYuga=25920
And we are now on the verge of entering Treta Yuga.

    Please share your views.

    hi mst,

all hindu gurus are now peeking into my blog posts and coming with their own funda.

Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev would NOT even know what precession of the earth means..

i know all this-- because it is part of my PRINCIPLES OF NAVIGATION exams - to get a single stripe at sea -- the pass marks is 80% .

people who have NIL idea of astronomy are now acting like DESI carl sagans

if these hypocrites dont take it easy -- i will make sure all of them land up in the garbage bin of Indian spirituality and history .
