To these self righteous ignoramuses I have to say this " Before your country came out from under the quarternary ice age -- in India , we knew the anti-pyretic properties of Amla. In Kerala they used to apply Nellikka podi along wih hair oil to prevent sunstroke. Charaka Samhita has it in writing in Sanskrit-- as does ancient 6000 year old Ayurvedic texts in Malayalam from the days of Parashurama.

A decade ago, I was the
only Indian on my Chemical tanker, in addition to the cook. The rest were all
Europeans.
The cook was a Goan,
and thinking that being a South Indian I must have a Sambhar as a compulsory
dish, he served it for lunch.
My South Korean Chief Engineer tasted it and he liked it. So I told him " This will put more lead into your pencil, as it contains Uluva or Methi seeds . No Indian curry is complete without it " .
Pretty soon, Sambhar
had to be made daily-- and all would gorge on it, making the cook go into a
tizzy--for he was using instant ready made sambar powder.
In Malayalam we call it
Uluva. Methi seeds or Fenugreek is an essential ingredient in sambhar.
Fenugreek is the
universal healer as per Ayurveda , first introduced to this planet by Charaka
in 4200 BC. This quantum spice treats
and prevents almost every ailment.
There is a saying--if a
food is bitter and bad tasting it is good for health. While is a food is very
tasty it is bad for health. Methi seeds is very bitter in its original form.
It was introduced to
Egypt by the Kerala Maharishis to PREVENT the PMS syndrome of the women folk. .
The Arabs took it to their deserts for the lactating mothers and to ease child
birth. The Christian invaders took it all around the world.
For the past one week I
have been consuming Uluva kheer. My wife makes a kheer with coconut milk and
jaggery. The Uluva seeds are soaked overnight. The sweet kheer has a slight bitter
taste to it, which make it absolutely delightful. My reason was to kill my weight increase.
Why did I say it is a
woman's best friend? Have you ever seen

I am taking uluva regularly since two weeks. I was told it increases stamina for getting through the day and for prevention of kidney stones. Still under progress, let's see. Your articles are thought provoking. Good read. thanks

ReplyDeletei have been eating methi seeds for over 20yrs. in the beginning they taste awful. slowly you will get used to it.
How I eat it? clean 4-5 spoons of methi seeds, soak them overnight, eat them in the morning first thing after getting up along with 2 glasses of lukewarm water with a little honey n lime.
methi is excellent for diabetes, which is sadly an epidemic in India due to an unhealthy lifestyle caused by rising prosperity.

i always maintain my weight when I am on ship due to the disciplined regime. But when I am at home, the leisure of anytime snacking takes a toll on my waist!
this is a problem faced by most seafarers when on leave.

ReplyDeletei am a misfit to talk about weight management. for the past 15 years i weigh 103 kilos.
i put on weight at the rate of 1.2 kilos per month while on ship-- as i work with my brains and not my limbs, being the captain.
so i always take a couple of loose pants for the last month. at home i lose weight as i swim daily.
this is despite not eating breakfast for 26 years . for the past 5 years i do not have lunch.
by evening on ship, i am so hungry that i eat my own lips along with my T bone steak -- all the while making loud unholy smacking sounds, unbecoming of a captains table.
pssst-- but my officers assure me , that mE table manners are fine.
to lose weight INPUT/ food - must be less than OUTPUT / exercise ( k-calories ) -- it is as simple as that.
but this thumb rule does NOT work for certain people whose body puts on fat cells at certain spots ( buttocks for women/ abdomen for man ) as stress/ crisis management. you may find this bizarre, but such people can be hypnotized to lose weight.
to be frank, i find my weight ok for my job.
at sea the physical toughness factor has always been there. a bunch of soldiers would run for their lives if the fight broke out in a bar with a bunch of sailors.
when i tell a crew member to do something on my ship - he must be cock sure that if the captain prefers NOT to throw the rule book at him, he can beat the daylights out of him if he wants to.
so at sea capt mahatma gandhi can never be as effective as capt steval segal. this is not like manmohan singh in parliament taking crap from all and sundry.
if you ask my officers/ crew who have sailed with capt vadakayil they will tell you -- he always keep 20 kilo dumb bells in his cabin for the past 2 decades at least. the grapevine will whisper that if you can do half of what he can do, you can ask him for any favours.
getting back--
have soluble fibre ( like isabgol ) after every meal- to speed the passage of food inside the body.
eat fruits like apple or banana before a meal.
drink plenty of water.
go easy on sugar and oil.
