MARINE ENGINEERING SELF EXAMINER , SHIP'S MAIN ENGINES - CAPT AJIT VADAKAYIL

25 years ago my ship encountered very bad weather in the Mediterranean sea.

So as soon as my ship berthed at an Italian port Livorno, I had to go ashore to NOTE PROTEST.

In Italy, there is no notary public. So the captain has to go to the court , raise his hand and swear JURO-- and say whatever he wants to the judge.

There I noticed a British First Engineer in bad shape, literally he was frightened.  So I asked him " May be if you can tell me your problem, I can help you out ".

He said in the same bad weather his ship's main engines failed and in the process of inspection his Chief Engineer got CRUSHED TO DEATH  inside the crank case.

I asked him " Who else was there inside the main engine crank case with your Chief  Engineer? This is to prove that you did NOT push him and murder him"

The poor guy clutched his head , literally got his head in a spin and sat on the floor.

Then he said " I was the only guy with him, there were NO witnesses!"

Then I asked him " Did your Chief Engineer engage the TURNING GEAR before he entered the crank case "

He looked puzzled

I said  " This is to prevent the crankshaft from sudden spin when a wave hits the ship's propeller in rough seas . Cheer up buddy - you cannot be charged for murder "

Just an example --how a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Nowadays we have ship's engineers getting promoted very fast, by "nice nellies" who give more importance to THREE BAGS FULL of SIRS , than to merit.

If you are an engineer at sea find out what you are worth!

At sea you are only respected for what you are worth! A donkey on a throne is still a donkey!!

Grading:

Correct- plus two marks

Wrong - minus one marks

Did not attempt- minus two marks

Time allowed- 90 minutes

If you score less than 20% marks -- you are NOT an engineer.

The lack of engineering awareness at sea in amazing. People keeping doing cures , with NO dang idea of prevention.

We keep talking about bust AE conrods, how to tighten the bolts etc-- without even understanding that this piece of metal is supposed to PUSH and not to PULL.

  2. Dear Sir,

    ""....
I said " This (Turning Gear) is to prevent the crankshaft from sudden spin when a wave hits the ship's propeller in rough seas . Cheer up buddy - you cannot be charged for murder "...!!!!!!!

Little light on this please ... The turning gear will only restrict the manoeuvring lines which will disable a start of the engine. Because the engaging pinion of the turning gear is directly/through planetary gears connected to the rotor of the motor which is /must be free to rotate. so the movement of propeller cannot be stopped by a turning gear.

  4. Hie Captain,
Don't know if i'm being foolish to be asking this but i've always been thinking of this and as yet could'nt find anyone who knew anything of it. See each day we are taking out millions of barrels of crude oil and gas from the earth. This has been going on from decades.
Now since these are coming out of earth i wonder there would be some impact of it on the core of earth. You see there might be some relevance of these materials to be there underground in first place. I also came across an article stating that MNC's have invested so much into the oil infrastructure that they won't let any environmentalist say a word about this impact nor would they let alternate sources of energy develop(Ambanis in India Included)
Also is it true that America has large reserves of oil but rather than using its own reserves it buys them from others. If so Why? I'm not sure but its a gut feeling that rather than the Rothschilds it would be the oil companies that would control the world governments in future.

    Thanks

    1. hi s,

the entire oil industry is controlled by rothschild.

when they remove oil they pump water into the empty space .

In most gas reservoirs they do NOT replace the withdrawn gas with water. the reservoirs are self supporting .

HERE IS MY COMMENT ON TIMES OF INDIA-- OF COURSE I DO NOT FEEL GOOD AFTER MAKING THIS COMMENT
    ##########################

i have had the MISFORTUNE of sailing with several indian navy officers of ranks, Lt Commanders, Commanders, Captains and even a Commodore at sea in the merchant navy, during my 10 years as a junior officer and 30 years of ship command .

    LET TRUTH BE TOLD --

NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THESE OFFICERS HAD ANY MERIT OR EVEN CHARACTER , FORCING ME TO PONDER MANY A TIME- IS OUR NATION SAFE IN THEIR HANDS . FULL OF STYLE AND NO SUBSTANCE .

a lot of them came into the merchant navy via the back door using equivalent CERTIFICATE OF SERVICE on the navigating side , for high salary in SCI, free foreign liquor and the chance to see foreign lands .

on the engine side we have the ENGINE ROOM ARTIFICERS masquerading as proper certified engineers , who did NOT understand the inside theory of machinery . .almost like a nurse doing surgery .

we had CHIEF PETTY OFFICERS as electrical officers -- none of whom could even read an electrical circuit diagram .

WE NEED PROPER VETTING OF INDIAN NAVY OFFICERS -- AS NOW INDIA WILL GO NUCLEAR , AND WE CANT AFFORD LACK OF MERIT .

They need to be vetted for SEASICKNESS – this must be compulsory ! 60% of these men start vomiting in moderate weather and are usless . we call them fresh water navigators .

after saying all this-- i am proud of our armed forces -- this is NOT to lower their morale-- put to reflect over what need to be done . JAI HIND !!

taking over command of new ships is routine at sea -- and things are more sophisticated .

    Sir
i agree with you on this.
i am from an indian navy background. The officers who opt out of the navy seeking premature retirement are substandard officers. The officers who choose to stay despite of low pay, long working hours and poor accomodation are the men who are the real strength of the navy.

    hi lk,

you just made me open my mouth a little-- it is better that i do NOT open more.

i had a 58 year old "experienced" electrical officer on board my brand new ship. He spent almost his whole life in the electrical dept on indian navy ships.

this muslim guy used to give my sindhi chief engineer pin pricks daily -- despite the fact that there was NO work for him on board , as the ship was NEW.

one day the chief engineer , when he came to my cabin for a usual pre-lunch beer was not himself. he mind was chattering and he was silent .

so in between he went to his cabin for a pee , i asked his wife ( just married ) if she fought with her husband.

she laughed and said NO-- but whispered it is due to the indian navy electrical officer giving him a major pin prick.

so after lunch i announced that we will have a SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING after evening tea.

i had everyone in the meeting--got my chief officer relieved off bridge watch by third mate.

so he naturally wanted to know what is cooking ?

      i told him--just be a witness.

in the meeting one thing transpired to another--and innocently i asked my cadet ( who was told to say --i do NOT know ) what it the colour of an EARTH WIRE in a 3 wire system of AC electricity.

since the cadet said --i do NOT know, i told this electrical officer to impart knowledge .

this man had NO clue-- he mouthed some colors.

then immediately i asked my first year fitter ( educated man ) --what is the color ( this was NOT match fixing ) .

he replied knee jerk SIR- YELLOW OR GREEN.

I IMMEDIATELY ASKED THIS ELECTRICAL OFFICER TO BE READY TO GET DOWN IN THE NEXT PORT -- see captains do NOT scream YOU ARE FIRED like donald trump .

in an AC system, once you identify the earth wire, you can put the other two wires in any hole-- we all know that .

so what was this indian navy electrician worth ?

      punch into google search-
MARINE ENGINEERING SELF EXAMINER, ELECTRICALS VADAKAYIL

that electrical officer would have scored MINUS marks in the test above.

after thsi incident i would tell the company-- get rid of the post of electrical officer --which they did.

my last 10 years of command-- i had NO electrical officer on board.

DONKEYS work can be done by anybody.

    2. Awesome sir awesome. I have no words for a captain like you who deserve to command at sea. There are very few who can do that. I am an engineer myself and loved your chat on blog. Any email to contact you for some technical discussion. Best regards
