IGOR EVGENYEVICH IRODOV- A BEAUTIFUL MIND
When my elder son was preparing for various entrance exams while doing his 12th standard, the books authored by IE. Irodov took pride of place on his desk.
Today I punched in IE Irodov and found that not even a photograph of this brilliant Russian exists on the Internet.
Wikipedia has ignored him. Probably because he is a Russian Commy?
IE Irodov would have been worshipped by Wikipedia if he was a American Jew.
So just to check out the standards , I punched into Google the name of a bimbette Anushka Sharma--whose only claim to beauty is a fair skin.
Yes indeed! Wikipedia has written a good account of this chudiyal lookin' and behavin' woman.
Above : The THIN LIPPED beauty -- shows how much we value blue veins on legs and pale white complexion.
So what is beauty?
Wikipedia says-
QUOTE:-- “Beauty is a characteristic of a person, animal, place, object, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure, meaning, or satisfaction. The experience of ‘beauty’ often involves the interpretation of some entity as being in balance and harmony with nature, which may lead to feelings of attraction and emotional well-being. Because this is a subjective experience, it is often said that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. A subject of beauty is anything that resonates with personal meaning” UNQUOTE
I see beauty in a sunset.
I see beauty in a Gian Lorenzo Bernini marble statue--hardly anybody knows this man--everybody knows Michael Angelo.
I see beauty in the mind and work of IE Irodov.
There are very few Physicists who can come near this Russian's stature in the field of Physics.
Ask any student in India who has sat for IIT entrance exams, what they think of IE Irodov.
Since 2006- they have reduced the "thinking capability" test in IIT of 15 minute problem solving which require IE Irodov type OUT OF THE BOX thinking , and has gone more towards " clear concepts " of short time 4 minute objective type question.
My elder son used to say " It may take a couple of hours to solve a tough IE Irodov numerical problem--and it gives you great joy when you finally crack it. You need a good grasp of N.Piskunov's Calculus "
IE Irodov's numerical problems in Physics are the most complex and trickiest of its type-- much harder than Resnick and Halliday --for he combines multiple concepts of Physics..
People may ask me " Captain, why waste your time on Irodov?"
I will tell them " There are mice and men on the Internet-- mostly the former category on Wikipedia. Irodov belongs to the latter category--
-- My blog site exists to bury some propped up mice and exhume some real buried men !"

kudos man!nice ! i used to solve irodov while preparation for entrance.GREAT BOOK
ReplyDeleteI have been teaching students for IITJEE and have reffered this books to so many. The same kind of surprise came to me when I also tried to know about him. My Guruji published the first solution to I.E.Irodov and sent to him and he(IRODOV) sent back a letter of appreciation to my GURUJI. I have seen Mr.I.E.Irodov photograph with his family. He has lived somewhat miserable life. He never had Royalty for his book through his entire life. I really felt bad as student and have dedicated my life in popularizing his book through my classroom teaching.
ReplyDeletewhat living a miserable life ?
DeleteA man of real genius like him deserves a very good life. I feel the beauty of his mind while solving this book. I really want to know about him a lot. A Great Man. A Great Author. Publisher of a Great Book.
Sir, Can you do me a favor. I don't have the last book of physics by I.E.Irodov, Problems in atomic and nuclear physics. If you have any source from where I can get it kindly let me know. I am physics enthusiast. I have very good collection of books after seeing you blog i felt incomplete because I don't have it.

His first printed textbook IE Irodov prepared and published in the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute in 1957. It was a collection of problems in atomic physics. The book was immediately positively marked by experts, and following its publication has been carried out, "Ato" in 1959. Following the all-union recognition in this book was followed by her international recognition. The book was published in Poland, Romania, United States. After substantial completion of the book, is primarily to expand its theme, the book became known as the collection of problems in atomic and nuclear physics. It is symbolic that the last book published in vivo IE Herod was the 8th edition of the book in 2002, published under the title "Atomic and nuclear physics. A collection of problems. "
IV Saveliev attracted IE Herod (with teachers of the Department of General Physics, Moscow Engineering Physics Institute and the OI NN Vzorov suede) to write the "Collection of problems in general physics." The first edition of this book was done in 1968 by publishing house "Science".
In 1979 the publishing house "Science" has released his own collection of problems in General Physics IE Herod, entitled "Problems in General Physics."
The aim of the life of IE Herod was to write their own full course of general physics. On the implementation of this goal by IE Irodov spent 27 years of his life.
thanks , greman!
ReplyDeleteThanks Captain for tributing such a great author...
ReplyDeleteThis blog reminded me of the days when I used to prepare for Engg entrance tests (nearly 8 years ago), problems in general physics by Irodov used to be the benchmark of knowledge of topics like Mechanics and Fluid dynamics. This is one book which has been used by hundreds of thousands of Indian students in past 30 years specially the engg aspirants. A lot of them have managed to get into IITs and hold positions of repute today.
ReplyDeleteHC Verma's Concepts of Physics has borrowed a lot of problems from Irodov's classic book. A number of solutions have come up with time to help students with the problems. What makes the Irodov's problems unique is beautiful use of applied calculus which gives a practical approach to the problems. Solving every single of Irodov's problems is a bliss for a Physics enthisiast! I am sure you'd concur if you have experienced it yourself.
I hit this blog trying to learn more about the author who seems to have died in 2002. It is unfortunate that wikipedia or any other website does not have a substantial account of Irodov.
I still possess three copies of Problems in General Physics, two of which are original hardbound printed in Russia editions. They are more of collectibles for me now as my daily work does not involve Physics. However, I still visit them at times and glance through the pages. The feeling of nostalgia sweeps through my mind reminding me of those countless hours well invested in solving these problems spent years back!
