Subject: XXX/ WEATHER ROUTING WITHOUT A CONSCIENCE
XXX/ ajit,
i have used various weather routing services in my long command career -
- probably a hundred times --
never been satisfied even ONCE -- as a master.
never ever saved any time due to such unrequisitioned shore help.
at sea the the shortest route is rarely the fastest route.
if the curved great circle path is causing severe adverse affects on
ships passage --it is NOT worth it. why have SAFETY FIRST
stencilled on bridge front?
i get the feeling routing service is just a profitable organisation , to
help greedy charterers flog the ship in a single minded manner.
i don't get the feeling that they have a commitment to sailors lives.
if you deviate from the recommended route, because the TERRAIN DOES NOT
MATCH THE ROUTING MAP the charterers will with hold hire and make
absurd claims , -- on vindictive advise ( vested ) from router without a
conscience .
a) in winter NORTH ATLANTIC/ PACIFIC -- XXX can NEVER do meaningful
routing -- temperate latitude depressions come in families -- one after
the other-- the whole ocean for thousands of miles is affected -- to say
that there is a calm passage through , known only to routers -- IS JUST
A LIE.
b) i have never ever seen weather routing ask master about his
constraints -- for even if master gives a big list, they don't know how
to react on it. for they don't have the technical knowledge ( say on
chemical tankers )
c) on chemical tankers with low free boards we don't like to be rimed --
all sensitive LCD equipment on weather main deck will get unstreamlined
-- one single green wave rolls over , and there is heavy damage.
d) once north of the aleutian , my ship had to go the rescue of a brand
new XXX ship-- whose foremast fell down due to getting top heavy by
rime -- the fallen mast was held by 4 stout wire stays and was battering
the ship like BRUCE LEE'S nanchaku. our own forecastle was like a mount
everest with rime .
e) no router will ever accept liability for damage to ship due to poor
routing-- are the owners so toothless?
f) before weather routers made NORTH OF ALEUTIAN CHAIN, their
playground-- this whole area was covered under institute warranties.
g)routers don't have an idea what can happen on a RIMED parcel chemical
tanker carrying high melting point chemicals--
1) cumulative list due to failure of heating
2) framo power pack inside forepeak store-- with a mountain of ice on
top. the heart of the cargo/ ballast system is inaccessible-- in case of
list .
3) rimed and frozen under a ice mountain-- PV cargo valves stack with
high VP cargoes
4) rimed and buried air pipe heads of ballast tanks
5) heating inlet / return pipes unlagged and buried under rime.
6) area around kuril islands ( japan east coast ) having thousands of
bergy bits , each of which can damage the propeller.
7) only one boiler, with insufficient diesel oil tank capacity
on XXX right now if i were to tell XXX that we have iron ore in all 9
holds and hence , ship should not roll too much to avoid racking
stresses , on a 18 year old ship-- it will fall on deaf ears.
with the MONGOLIAN PERMANENT HIGH shifting--- due to china getting
industrialised -- the weather in north pacific is not so predictable
anymore --
thanks and best regards

Sub : XXX/ WEATHER ROUTING WITHOUT A CONSCIENCE
gentlemen,
time charterers XXX is eager to send this to our P&I XXX --
let me predict the result --
WHO CARES?
WHO UNDERSTANDS?
note: at XXX-- my ex 2nd Engr XXXX paid me a
visit at anchorage with a token gift -- we had seen VERY bad times
together like a commando unit---- he wanted to know why i give
away my intellectual rights virtually free--
WELL IT IS ABOUT GIVING BACK SOMETHING TO THE SEA --
-- IT IS A CONCEPT ---
VITAL FOR MY HAPPINESS/ HONOUR IN MY RETIRED LIFE--
I really don't care for mouse pushin' fools ashore who want to hold
on to their chairs, at the expense of sailors lives.
thanks and best regards
