TML-- LIQUIFYING BULK CONCENTRATES AND ORES - SHIP CAPSIZING AT SEA


A lot of sailors' lives have been lost at sea because the Master and the Mate did NOT have the knowledge or the balls, to say enough is enough.


Shippers just want your ship to load in rain and FO as soon as possible from port.  And they will pay underhand money to the surveyors who do the TML tests-- in any case most of them 99% are ignorant.

gentlemen,

LONG EMAIL-- WORTH THE EFFORT --

when i was a young cadet -- i had several opportunities to load copper
concentrates -- and so had a good idea of what is cumulative list.

while loading sticky fine nickle ore at new caledonia , as a young
master -- at one stage i got the gut feeling that my ship might capsize
at sea enroute to usa ( coos bay )

-- and then hard-core vadakayil swung into action with typical gusto --
without waiting for any almighty shore power to baptise --

-- it was an ancient example of master using the sword of present day ISM code --

gist of action:

1)home grown TML centrifuge tests ( STRANGE new concept those days )
were done with representative samples from barges -- before loading.

representative because solid ore pile is NOT liquid cargo, where you can
shove a UTI sampler in between --so a SHARP SS METAL PIPE IS USED TO
INVADE INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE ORE PILE -- AND EXTRACT-- like a pipette
in a chemical lab.

2)no working allowed in rain ( to force the barges and shore pile to
cover up )

3)3 cm radar was used for rain prognosis.

before you read further -- pl read the PATHETIC nay MORONIC official--
IMO approved " beating test for TML " attachment --

its is a page from IMSBC code -- for the uninitiated -- this is the
equivalent of IBC code ( the gospel ) on chemical tankers --

NEWTONS THIRD LAW:--

i am no fan of newtons and his "classical physics" ( for i have learnt
quantum physics , just to author a book on life beyond 5 human senses )
-- but still ore and water will fall within the scope of newtons 3rd law

it states that for every action there is a equal and opposite reaction.
so whether you kick the hammer or hit the hammer on your foot -- the
effect is pretty much the same --

so with the every beat of the deadly IMSBC metal can -- water flows past
ore-- and vice versa -- where F effective minus F friction = MA



VADAKAYILS ANTIQUE HOME GROWN CENTRIFUGE TML TEST:--

this follows newtons first law of motion-- not third law.

a transparent glass bottle ( like of horlicks ) is used.  the
representative sample extract from the innards of the SS metal pipe, is
shoved into a FINE SS mesh sock and sealed.

the transparent glass bottle is now put inside a metal can with a handle
-- a rope is attached to the handle and the whole paraphernalia rotated
around the head ( like how a old sailor of yore swung the lead , before
the throw ) .

-- water gets centrifuged like how the laundry spinner centrifuges water
off the wet clothes.  water which comes out of ore inside the mesh sock
-- is on ONE WAY "ACTION" LANE , for the mesh acts as hundred non-return
valves --

water accumulates inside the glass bottle and it can be seen from
outside -- it is then quantified and photographed --

the longer the radius of the rope the greater the centrifuge force.

ancient indians extracted water from milk this way ( panchatantra tales
) 7000 years ago.

for the non-mentally challenged   -- F= MV2/r = 4 Pi2 MN2 R ( where M=
mass/ R= radius / V= speed / N= rpm )

Refer to IMO Code of Safe Practice for Solid Bulk Cargoes, (the IMO BC Code), 1998 Edition at Sections 4,7, and 8 and at Appendices A and D.


Recommended procedures for testing fine ores or bulk cargoes which may liquify is covered in Appendix D1 of the Code.

Many ores which are essentially insoluble in water and which contain mainly finely divided material, may liquefy on ocean voyages if they contain an excessive amount of water when loaded or if they subsequently become wetted. This applies even though they may appear to be in the form of dry powders of granular materials.

Such liquefaction is basically due to energy being applied to the cargo. This can be as a result ROLLING AT SEA.  

Liquefaction must be monitored during the voyage if the load port stock pile was wet. Any cargo of finely divided material which tends to flatten and which develops a putty-like surface during a voyage, has started to liquefy.

The ship should take urgent action and should proceed to the nearest port of refuge, after altering course/ speed to avoid rolling/ pitching —even if this means you have to go to a farther port of refuge.

A list of cargoes known to liquefy is given in Appendix A of the IMO BC Code, but this list is not exhaustive.
Master must insist upon a written statement from the shippers or charterers confirming that the product concerned will not liquefy if it contains an excess of moisture. 

Saving life is Master’s duty. 

The Insurance companies are more worried about moolah.

A certificate should be provided stating the TML for the cargo is a must for wet concentrates.

Master must examine stockpiles of cargoes before loading. Water oozing from such stockpiles is an indication that  the stockpile has a moisture content above the TML. Any obviously wet material should be rejected as such cargo might form a shear plane on which a dry cargo loaded subsequently, might slide around.

If masters are doubtful about the condition of a cargo, they can read the can test  described in the IMO BC Code, Section 8.3 at Page 24.   Samples must be drawn from lower level of the pile .

When loading at freezing temperatures , check for inherent dry ice crystals, which can melt later inside ship’s hold.

Samples are drawn from various levels including the bottoms of piles and that these are warmed and then tested by the can test.

    Respected Captain,

    What is special about Tamil Nadu?

    How come it is able to continuously produce word geniuses like Ramanujam, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, C.V. Raman, A.R. Rahman, Abdul Kalam, Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Viswanathan Anand, Illayaraja, etc?

    Even till recently the Chief Justice of India, the Finance Minister, the RBI governor are all Tamils?

    Is there any scientific reason behind this? Because no other region has produced such super genius people in such numbers.

    when i was on my training ship in mumbai with 250 other cadets ( two years ) -- the biggest TELUs ( oily and slimy ) and SNEAKS ( snitches ) became SCC ( senior cadet captains ) , CC ( cadet captains ) , CL ( cadet leaders ) etc.

    i used to be in the CAPTAINS MONTHLY BREAKFAST PARTY ( cadet with maximum negative marks for OFFICER LIKE QUALITIES ) -- to be chewed up for breakfast every month .

    i got an EXTRA FIRST in every subject --except OFFICER LIKE QUALITIES.

    now what are OFFICER LIKE QUALITIES-

    being a son of a bit#h, being a sneak, being a hypocrite, being a as$ kisser , being a leader who will sell out his team, being a back biter, being an informer , being the best in playing to the gallery.

    so, so--

    at the passing out parade --most of the cadets who got all PRIXES were leaders -- they all got BOOOOOEEEEED !

    I remember i got only one prize--for being the best REPORTER IN ENGLISH -- the claps I got from the entire hall still resound in my ears -- along with another ROC ( royal officer cadet -who did NOT care to become a sold out leader ).

    and mind you -- i was in every single team which made my TOP ( starboard fore top ) the champion TOP.

    i was a champion sailor, rower, signaller, marks in subjects, soccer team in both years --

    but i lacked OLQ ( officer like qualities ) of being a FU#KIN' SLIME BALL.

    so in my passing our certificate , after two years of training -- i had an EXTRA FIRST in all subjects -- except OLQ where i was third grade

    so i guess they held a special meeting and GRACED ME TO FIRST CLASS --a young 18 year old boy -- .TEE HEEE !

    AT SEA, THE SAILORS DO NOT CARE FOR YOUR FOUR STRIPES- THEY ONLY CARE FOR WHO YOU ARE--

    AT SEA PEOPLE WHO KNOW ME , OR HAVE HEARD OF ME -- OR SAILED WITH ME, WILL VOUCH--

    CAPT AJIT VADAKAYIL WAS A SLAVE MORE POWERFUL THAN THE MIGHTY FU#KIN' CAESAR -- BY LIGHT YEARS .

    this has now passed on to LORE -- never ti happen again in the annals of sea .
