THE NAIVE SAILOR, LUBE OIL ANALYSIS , BABITT, WHITE METAL SHEDDING --CAPT AJIT VADAKAYIL



At sea most of the machinery breakdowns are made made. We have a fantastic system of PREDICTIVE maintenance , -- which is lub oil analysis. 


If your friend dies of diabetes, despite all the blood tests and urine tests he did-  you must kick his doctor's backside.


This is assuming he gave his OWN blood and urine, in the correct manner !

Here are some actual emails exchanged from my ship-- glean and understand-- be safe--

gentlemen,

after agreeing that --

COLD LUBOIL SAMPLES MUST NEVER EVER BE TAKEN.

THE SAMPLING POINTS 1 AND 2 -- MUST BE COLOUR CODED -- AND MUST BE THE
SAME -- ALWAYS.

i hasten to explain further--

AAA) for checking if the aecc luboil requires a CHANGE -- POINT NO 1 .

this decision also depends on the volume of oil in the sump ( capacity ) primarily and the amount of low load operations , and type/ number of piston/ scraper  rings . 

ignorant engineers sometimes clean the aecc candle filters with aggressive chemicals ( instead of kerosene ) and spoil the filter permanently.

here the RUNNING circulating sample is taken "as near as practical " to point of entry to the engine .

BBB) for PREDICTIVE maintenance of engine-- the assessement of machinery bearings etc -- POINT NO 2

this RUNNING circulating sample must be taken directly after the aecc oil has passed through the machinery--on return line , ALWAYS BEFORE THE FILTERS.

avoid bottom of sumps and purifier lines.

in case any machinery has to be shut down due to VERY/ HIGH temp / pressure at sampling position-- then within 10 minutes.

allow 2 litres wastage before collecting sample -- to avoid accumulated water / contaminant . wait till the oil jet is uniform.

gentlemen,

nearly 2 centuries ago ago, isaac babitt introduced white metal ( tin based bearings ) for steam engine locomotives --

he would be laughing from his current parking space -- if he knows that in this year of  XXX -- this planet still uses his patented bearings in high speed 4 stroke marine diesel engines ( which work in a chloride full environment )

 -- such has been our evolution at sea --

we cant think beyond this obselete mix of 86% tin + 5.5% copper and 8.5% antimony -- while the whole world has gone on to copper + aluminium alloys.


from a chemical perspective:--

tin oxide micro layer forms, because of PASSIVATION MAGIC ACTION  of mother nature. ( like chromic oxide for stainless steel ).

however this layer is attacked by acids and alkalies -- we use mobil guard 330 of TBN 30 in our AE crank case.

We conduct  AECC LUB OIL ANALYSIS in XXX-- these tests are meant to detect shed tin basically , for proactive bearing damage detection-- --

much before the crankshaft reached horrific XXX standards -- to check for saponification-- to check for IMPROPER AECC FILTER -- to check for excessive low load operations--

for this the oil drawing method into sample bottles must be clearly laid down. i have seen only 5% chief engineers do it the right way. on the other extreme i have sailed with some chief engineers who DOCTOR this drawn sample with fresh aecc oil , so that company thinks he is a very good chief engineer -- ( this man became "blue eyed superintendent" in XXX , for doctoring the ME exhaust temps too )

many times rain water or salt spray gets into the ae crank case,  via funnel -- exhaust pipe -- turbo charger-- ( with exh pipe drain clogged ). or it could be salt water from cooler crack via intake valves.

salt water corrosion too forms a tin oxide with SnCl2 -- that is hard and brittle , and twice as hard as steel -- chlorides promote electro chemical reaction

-- power imbalance causes bearing failure -- when a ae cylinder sleeps for weeks with carbon choked exhausts and very low exh temps , and nobody knows -- for it is not considered necessary to note down individual cylinder exh temps ( only max exh temps are logged , and that too taken by laymen )

Dear captains and Chief Engineers,

In case of A/E # 1 of XXX all camshaft bearings were found worn and we arranged to renew them.

While doing the job it was found that the camshaft flange surfaces also become uneven and require renewal.
See report from XXXX.

All vessels please check all aux. engines of your vessels at your earliest and advise finding. Order for necessary spares as required.

    Respected Captain,

    What is special about Tamil Nadu?

    How come it is able to continuously produce word geniuses like Ramanujam, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, C.V. Raman, A.R. Rahman, Abdul Kalam, Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Viswanathan Anand, Illayaraja, etc?

    Even till recently the Chief Justice of India, the Finance Minister, the RBI governor are all Tamils?

    Is there any scientific reason behind this? Because no other region has produced such super genius people in such numbers.

    when i was on my training ship in mumbai with 250 other cadets ( two years ) -- the biggest TELUs ( oily and slimy ) and SNEAKS ( snitches ) became SCC ( senior cadet captains ) , CC ( cadet captains ) , CL ( cadet leaders ) etc.

    i used to be in the CAPTAINS MONTHLY BREAKFAST PARTY ( cadet with maximum negative marks for OFFICER LIKE QUALITIES ) -- to be chewed up for breakfast every month .

    i got an EXTRA FIRST in every subject --except OFFICER LIKE QUALITIES.

    now what are OFFICER LIKE QUALITIES-

    being a son of a bit#h, being a sneak, being a hypocrite, being a as$ kisser , being a leader who will sell out his team, being a back biter, being an informer , being the best in playing to the gallery.

    so, so--

    at the passing out parade --most of the cadets who got all PRIXES were leaders -- they all got BOOOOOEEEEED !

    I remember i got only one prize--for being the best REPORTER IN ENGLISH -- the claps I got from the entire hall still resound in my ears -- along with another ROC ( royal officer cadet -who did NOT care to become a sold out leader ).

    and mind you -- i was in every single team which made my TOP ( starboard fore top ) the champion TOP.

    i was a champion sailor, rower, signaller, marks in subjects, soccer team in both years --

    but i lacked OLQ ( officer like qualities ) of being a FU#KIN' SLIME BALL.

    so in my passing our certificate , after two years of training -- i had an EXTRA FIRST in all subjects -- except OLQ where i was third grade

    so i guess they held a special meeting and GRACED ME TO FIRST CLASS --a young 18 year old boy -- .TEE HEEE !

    AT SEA, THE SAILORS DO NOT CARE FOR YOUR FOUR STRIPES- THEY ONLY CARE FOR WHO YOU ARE--

    AT SEA PEOPLE WHO KNOW ME , OR HAVE HEARD OF ME -- OR SAILED WITH ME, WILL VOUCH--

    CAPT AJIT VADAKAYIL WAS A SLAVE MORE POWERFUL THAN THE MIGHTY FU#KIN' CAESAR -- BY LIGHT YEARS .

    this has now passed on to LORE -- never ti happen again in the annals of sea .
