POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE ON CHEMICAL TANKERS -- CAPT AJIT VADAKAYIL

     KMnO4--

KMnO4 crystals exist as purple rhombic prisms.

You must have 0.1 grammes of crystals pre measured in sealed glass tubes .  Mix it with 500 CC water only when required to get the requisite 0.02% strength.  Even if kept in the fridge , once mixed-- the shelf life is just 3 days.

Potassium permanganate is flammable by chemical reaction, and is a powerful oxidiser which is spontaneously flammable on reaction with Ethylene Glycol, Glycerine, Acetone, Alcohols, Aluminium, Acids and Carbon.  Explosion may occur, either when dry or in wet solution, in contact with organic or readily oxidisable materials.

It is moderately toxic by ingestion or subcutaneous route.  It is used as an antibacterial agent.

Failure of PTT:---

The Potassium Permanganate test does not detect all types of contamination.  It is common to obtain a good time on on the PTT and fail on water miscibility (hydrocarbon) test.  Potassium permanganate does not react with hydrocarbons.

PTT test fails only when contaminants react with KMNO4.  PTT time can be increased by bleach or a chlorinated solvent.

The following lists indicates which type of products react with Potassium Permanganate and cause the PTT to fail.

Reacts with all inhibited chemicals:
Acrylonitrile
Acrylates
Amines
Styrene

Reacts with organic matter:
Lead
Wood
Ethylene glycol
Triethanolamine
Isobutylaldehyde
Acetyl acetone
Esters of ethylene glycol
Acetic acid

Violent reaction with:
Acetone
Tert-butylamine
Alcohols
Nitric acid
Aluminium carbide
Ammonia
Sulphuric acid
Polypropylene
Glycerol
Hydrofloric acid
Carbon
Ethanol

Recommended procedure:--

By spraying (recirc) the tank with Potassium Permanganate your tank will pass the PTT time (just by preempting the surveyors medium ).  The tank has to be clean before spraying.  Traces of the above mentioned chemicals will react to the Potassium Permanganate mix.

The different ways of spraying Potassium Permanganate with good results are:

1              Put one table spoon Permanganate in a 200 litre barrel.  Use a spray gun and leave water running into the barrel while spraying as this mixture is strong.  Spray tank for about 45-60 minutes.

2              Mix six table spoons of Potassium Permanganate crystals in 2 cum of water  and recirc for half an hour.  This method might take more time as it has to be repeated if the mix turns straw yellow too soon.

3              Steam the tank, inserting a strong mixture of Potassium Permanganate, for about 60 minutes.

In all cases the tank must be thoroughly washed afterwards to remove the Potassium Permanganate/sludge.  There are no known coating restrictions.

WALL WASH:-

Indication of contamination will turn the Potassium Permanganate to a straw yellow colour.

There are many notorious places in the world where the surveyor (with ulterior motives) comes on board with his own expired KMnO4 solution and fails the ship.  In such a case mix your own solution .

Use 0.1 grams of crystals to 500 CC DI water to get 0.02% strength and run a test.

To prove the surveyors solution is expired , use pure lab Methanol and run a test .  If this test does not run for 120 minutes , the surveyors solution is expired--- shelf life over or not kept in cool/ dark place.

Look down into tube kept in a cold 15C water bath of white colour in daylight or fluorescent tube light.

Low PTT is often the result of a reducer remaining on the tank surface which could be the cargo itself.

Bleach is known to be contrary to a reducer and is an oxidising agent. Recirc at 50 deg after opening the pores of the coating.

Wash old PTT tested glass in HCL, then water and then Methanol.

The pinkish purple of the Potassium Permanganate solution changes to straw yellow ( Manganese di Oxide ). Extreme of pH can interfere with test. Check every 5 minutes . PTT test detects all inhibited chemicals.

PTT test fails only when contaminants react with KMNO4.

HC does not react with KMNO4.  So PTT time can be increased by Bleach or Chlorinated solvents . An equivalent of Stolt X is marketed by chemical companies too to neutralise the effects of Acrylic Monomers.

To get the true color of the faded straw yellow a standard solution of platinum cobalt (Uranyl Nitrate ) is available in the market.

The Potassium permanganate solution should be stored in brown bottles and in the dark.

Even if the PTT test taken on board before arrival passed, gives no quarantee to have the same result from the surveyors test. (Different spots taken by surveyor).

Glass apparatus that have a `brown film' should not be used as it is Manganese di-oxide, the reduced product of potassium permanganate. This will catalyse the oxidation/reduction decolorisation process of potassium permanganate and will give less PTT time. Glassware is cleaned by overnight immersion in an acid bath of 50% hydrochloric acid. The clean tubes must then rinsed well in tap water followed by DI water / Methanol.

Similarly, the flask  containing stock solution of potassium permanganate requires cleaning between batches of fresh solution. The last rinse should be with fresh potassium permanganate solution and not methanol.

Uranyl nitrate is HIGHLY TOXIC. This substance must not come into contact with the skin and NEVER be pipetted by mouth. Treat the Uranyl nitrate/ Cobaltous chloride standard solution with care.

It is easy to fail this test if gasolene dye fillers / cutters  or inhibitor chemical is present.

50cc filtered wash + 2cc KMNO4 ( 0.02 % strength ).  Mix 0.1 gms of the solid in tube to 500 cc of di water to get 0.02% strength.  It takes 1.5  hrs for the KMNO4 crystals to dissolve.

Keep in a dark place at 15C. Note the time taken for the purple pink colour to change to straw yellow .   Must hold for 50 minutes in the bath of 15C in a dark place.  Check every 5 minutes

Use HCL, then DI water, then Methanol  to wash glass , then water and finally Methanol.

Under  the purest conditions KMNO4 test will run 120 min. If the bath is colder than 15C the test will run longer.

For PTT 50 min at 15 deg C = 30 min at 20 deg C= 20 min at 28 deg C.

Do PTT tests for all tanks at same time—this way you know which tank is the best/ worst.

  1. Dear Captain,

    Greetings.
This is offtopic & SOS. Need your guidance.

My son is in his 12th month (yet to complete a year next Mar-12).

When he urinates, he's feeling pain. I see that his penis has swelled up than the usual size when he urinates, since y'day.

The opening on his penis is very small. I had noted this long back. Was of the opinion that as he grows, the opening will enlarge as required.

Please could you guide. Thank you.

  3. Dear Captain,

    Been to pediatrician, as suggested.
That was an infection, due to the small opening at the tip and there was puss formation aswell.
He removed it by gently pressing and and ensured that the skin goes a bit backward; we were suggested to continue for the next couple of weeks, so that there's enough opening for the kid to urinate.

    Thanks again Captain.

  9. Dear Captain,

SOS , My son of 16 months has red rashes (tiny red bubbles) all over his hands and legs from today morning. He's in his native.

The only odd thing I got to know about his activities were, he was playing in mud (where mud was black when leaves/ other things decompose along with water); he hasn't eaten anything unusual as observed by his grandmother (generally he keeps anything he finds in his mouth).

There are caterpillars around the house, due to the season. Would getting in contact with caterpillar, trigger such rashes.
There is no pain/ irritation either from his reactions (he's normal).

Will definitely take him to doctor. Could you please guide. Thank you.

Yes, only the important vaccinations have been done till date; however as there are two measles vaccination at different intervals, the latest one (@ 14th/ 15th month) has been missed.

  12. Dear Captain,

Regarding my son's allergy, all's well, as it subsided within a day / two. Thank you for your quick reply and guidance.
It was an allergic reaction, however everyone were clueless, as to what caused it.

Have a couple of questions :-)

    1. Is the month of Ashaadha (this year it's for two consecutive months) auspicious or inauspicious.
From my childhood, what I've been hearing is that it's inauspicious and we do not start / do any functions during this time.

Only recently got to know that this period (ashadha) of the year, has powerful vibrations and generally do pooja to goddesses (generally who are considered shakthi devathas)

I'm asking this, as your son's marriage happened, most probably once the Ashaadha started.
I'm sure all the stars / timings would be considered keeping Astrology in mind.

As this doubt is lingering in my mind, looking forward to your clarification.

    2. This may be personal to you, however please answer if your comfortable. (this is just out of curiosity).

In your comments regarding your son's marriage, you mentioned that your daughter in law has beaten your son in all the tennis matches and your wife in the badminton matches.
That means this family was known to you and it still took 300 profiles/ horoscopes to finally match the same person who was already in your family circles.

Just curious, had you not considered the profile earlier (else the wait would have been over :0) OR do you call it 'Runaanubandha' (don't know what to say.. however putting in my language).

the badminton matches were during the engagement period.

the tennis matches are in USA after marriage.

In Kerala Purva Ashadha is called Pooraadam and Uttara Ashadha is called Uthraadam- there were many considerations for choosing the marriage date.

Noni DYE is used to make organic dyes-including hair dye.

Noni ( Morinda bark ) produces a brownish-purplish dye that is used for making batik

It grows in volcanic soil and such nations like Japan gives propaganda. In times of famine and war they used it for food and medicines, out of compulsion rather than choice .

This plant juice has Potassium—so what ? Potassium is found in abundance in other foods.

sir i have gone through yours wall wash blog and the above blog.
In the above KMnO4 PTT test, If the 0.02% KMnO4 is not available onboard, we can make it onboard by putting 0.1gram in 500cc DI water. Do we need to wait for 1.5hrs to dissolve the solids in DI water before we use is as 0.02%KMnO4.?

It is understood that PTT test is result change in color from purple pink to straw yellow in a certain time/temp. But how we will come to know weather our PTT test is pass or fail. ? Like you mentioned, 50 mins at 15c, 30 mins at 20c. means will the color change in 50mins at 15c?
And the statement, Under purest condition KMnO4 test will run for 120 mins.?

Also sir, In your wall wash blog under the CL test, you mentioned use UNFILTERED wash for testing.
under HC test, You just mentioned WASH for testing and in above case FILTERED wash..
Do we need to use whatman 52 filter paper to filter the test methanol prior using for PTT test.?

And sir if you please explain the tank top testing procedure in brief. I have read in wall wash blog which says that use filter paper to absorb the methanol from the floor and put the paper in sample bottle and add 50cc test methanol for each filter paper. sir i don't understand which test methanol we should add with filter paper...?

My Aunt from maternal side, who regularly practices yoga (attends basic yoga classes with asanas) is facing the following issue in terms of health.

    a) After Vajraasana and Vyaagraasana, there is swelling at the knee area (knee cap) on the left leg.
    The pain starts from knee cap and the same can be felt around thigh region and also towards lower side calf muscle;

    b) During Surya Namaskaara, she gets wrist pain, shoulder pain and back pain.

    c) Apart from this, there's burning, itching sensation on the hands and legs, she regularly faces. (Not during yoga practice)

Although when young my aunt had attended yoga classes and she again started attending the yoga classes in hope of getting some respite.
Surprisingly, the yoga instructor's advise was of no use as she was informed that 'it happens as we age'. She's a bit devastated.

She's 42, has 2 kids (caesarian) and has no particular known ailments, never had any injuries..etc.
Both the kids are grown ups, studying in school and are healthy. But remember this being mentioned that, she started noticing the problems after the 'family planning operation'.

  30. Dear Captain,
Thank you for your information of this PTT wall wash test.
I am working on tank cleaning business, I mostly clean tank terminal which always required wall wash test. official wall wash test always performed by 3rd party, but I always want to perform it by myself to ensure that we're not gonna clean the tank again.

But I failed to do so. :(
    I need your rightful guidance.

I have pure methanol and permanganate solution (0.1 gr : 500 ml water)
I mix 2 ml of my permanganate solution to 50 ml pure methanol. it should be a blank solution. the color should be purple and should not change by any mean. BUT, WHY IT CHANGED TO YELLOW SUDDENLY??
what's possibly wrong? is my methanol expired, damaged, or something?

    appreciate your reply.

    Thank you,
    regard,

  31. Dear Captain,

    Greetings.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful 'Ugadi' festivities.

May the new year bestow upon you and your family, pleasant surprises everyday throughout the year.

Karnataka and few other states, follow the Lunar calendar and celebrate tomorrow.

Dear Captain: Have a SOS question, request your valuable guidance.

(Have a 2 year old kid) As the dates for monthly cycle had passed, wifey checked with a pregnant test kit today and it was positive (Within 35-40 days).

    Couple of months back, when I had consulted an astrologer(who charges heavy and reasonably provides good solutions);
he had informed that the times are not so conducive and asked me to avoid starting new business..etc

During this meeting, had informed that I was planning for second kid; he said we need to avoid planning for kid for a year (upto mid 2017) , due to planetary positions, else the kid born wouldn't be healthy (for ex: Deformed) and it would be lifelong.

Now, we are in a dillemma, - should we go with abortion OR leave the rest to God and go with conceaving.

For the first kid, we as a couple know the difficulties one has to go through to conceive (as it took many months to get a positive result).
Abortion itself is a bad karmic activity as it's going against nature.

Looking forward to your valuable guidance.

    Grace & Peace,

  32. Dear Captain,

Thank you for your timely and valuable guidance.
Was surprised to find that you had replied y'day itself

Don't know what to say Captain, however with heartfelt gratitude sincerely thank you for guiding me (and all of your followers aswell).

Always feel that some huge good karmic things have connected me (and several others ) to you. Nothing is accidental / co-incidence ( as you may believe).

As you are from God's own country, I'm trying to guess whose lineage you are from (considering all the blessed souls were connected to all the Vishnu avatars) and hopefully it would'nt be difficult to find :o)

Would break the Coconut today evening. Request your blessings, Captain.

    Grace & Peace,
    JTA

  34. Dear Captain,

    Greetings.

Today, my friend and colleague met you in the city (around afternoon).
He was so excited and happy to meet you, as he told me.

Couple of weeks back, I was thinking if I would be lucky enough to meet you (& Ma'm) and today I hear this news from a person known to me.

Was happy to hear this, when he informed me and couldn't believe. (Had introduced to our blog-site )
Wishing you wonderful years of perfect health, peace, prosperity.

Well, well, well..... what a lucky day it has been to my friend.... (he was literally on top of the world) I'll await my turn and luck :o) Wish me Captain..

    Grace & Peace,
