IN THE ZONE -- CAPT AJIT VADAKAYIL

IN THE ZONE , HARNESSING THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND — CAPT AJIT VADAKAYIL

More than 3 decades ago , in a shipboard party somewhere in the Mediterranean the soon to be antique Radio Officer boasted “ Nobody on the ship can do my job” .

It was the Morse code era. I was on the bridge doing my watch. The third officer , who was aware of my amateur Morse code proficiency, came up told me the story, and relieved me. I came down , accepted the radio officers challenge, the damages being one bottle of scotch.

The whole party shifted to the radio room , a tape recorder was hooked on . To cut a long story short, I beat the radio officer by 8 words to the minute all the while cracking non veg jokes during transmission.

All the soundly beaten poor man could say was “ Oh, shit!— but you did nerve signalling ”

So -- what do the following have in common?

---A lowly paid government office babu furiously typing away , all the while listening to cricket commentary

---A champion surfer making optimum use of a giant wave

---A Olympic high board diver executing a difficult manoeuvre for the gold medal

---A team of 100 tranced drummers in a temple festival of Kerala, their collective energy driving the beat

---You , yourself driving in busy traffic on a manual transmission

---A champion Table tennis player retrieving a awesome deuce smash made by his opponent , using his subconscious to match the speed of the ball

---Arjuna of Mahabharata shooting his arrow into the eye of the revolving fish, looking at its reflection in the pool below--

All of them were in “ IN THE ZONE “ — having harnessed the spirit. It is a place where everything clicks.

Being in the zone is a state of mind—where you are free of thinking and negative emotions and in A FEELING MODE. The less you think, the more you achieve—for you own your destiny.

All of them are –

--In a different ecstatic dimension, in a flow of energy, in a sort of a tunnel on autopilot

--All of them are in a state of timelessness, having no qualms of the future, totally in the present moment and in the present place, in a state of surrender but in focus

--Their effortless actions are not conscious , but driven by instinct, merging action and awareness, in perfect sync

--All have a sense of finesse and grace, with mind and body working in perfect unison

--All have their timing just right, with the gut feeling that the odds are in their favour, unbeatable and unstoppable in a state of dominance

--Body language shows that they are a picture of poise , calmness , enjoyment and confidence, in short – a magical state , with single minded  purpose , even before giving the shot

--All of them are beyond the boundaries of human ego, and feel that they are part of something larger, where the laws of the physical world cease to exist, transcending the condition of being human.

--All trust their instincts and intuition to do the right thing at the right time, without reasoning or analysing.

--All can feel what’s gonna happen next and act according with the flow . The game comes to you and not you going to the game.

GENIUSES ARE ORDINARY PEOPLE WHO CAN MAKE CONSCIOUS THEIR UNCONSCIOUS PERCEPTIONS. REMEMBER , EVERYTHING YOU DO WELL WITHOUT AWARENESS ,IS DONE BY THE SUBCONSCIOUS.

When the left and right lobe of the brain works in harmony, the unleashed mysterious K force can made you achieve the extraordinary .

Our intuition is like the weather vane, pointing us in the right direction. It does not take your decisions.

Any idea or thought you yourself accept as true will be taken as a command by the subconscious mind, as it cannot distinguish between dreams and reality . You can program or harness or fool the subconscious mind by imagining, unrestrained by left lobe censorship and conventional inhibitions .

Never squelch the hunches and perceptions spewed by your subconscious. Do not think inwards, think in feelings and images— if possible using all 5 senses—like texture , smells etc.

Any problem if approached from a unpredictable angle can give unexpected creative results. This is called lateral thinking. One of these days if you get the time watch the Hollywood movie MY COUSIN VINNY.

And don’t be too bashful and coy when you declare to yourself “ I am the best” ( like a certain ship captain ) – for it is the trigger for magic, it gives you the power . Like how milling turns into a full blown riot , after a trigger moment.

It pays to remember -- The subconscious responds to stimuli, not pressure.

We have heard athletes describe the phenomenon of BEING IN THE ZONE.  The frontal lobe is that part of the brain that allows us to be in the PRESENT MOMENT.

Arjun saw only the eye of the fish—at that time the activity in the neocortex ceases and there is no thinking. The cerebellum takes over at that point.

When the frontal lobe is activated you have focus, clarity, decisiveness, concentration, pro activeness and individuality.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an action, but  a habit.  TT players, high board divers –let the body do the work and tell the minds to FO.

When the mind has repeatedly instructed the body to perform an action, the body will begin to remember the action better than the thinking brain. Communication between cells is faster than the speed of light. Nerve cells are called neurons.

The face of a high board diver in the Olympics just before the jump for the gold medal --is the face of a human being in the zone. The brain has surrendered to the body.

CIVILISATION HAS ADVANCED BY EXTENDING THE NUMBER OF IMPORTANT OPERATIONS WHICH WE CAN PERFORM WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT THEM.

Meditation is a creation of the sages of  Indian Vedic civilization. The vedic civilisation flourished from 9000 BC to 4000 BC on the banks of the river Saraswati, till the river dried up due to an earthquake blocking the glacial mouth at the Himalayas. These seers had 12 strand DNA and king sized resonating pineal glands.

A few days ago, my wife went to  the ATM booth and came out white faced-- she said she just cant remember the password number.   I told her " Just insert the card and punch in as usual ----- it will come to you like magic ".   After a minute she comes out with a big grin--  it worked .

Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain. - Carl G. Jung

  1. Dear Captain

What a fantastic post! Yet again it pains me to see no readers' comment yet on this eye-opener post.

People usually grab with both hands and all eyes glued to those self-help reference materials which tell you what to do, how to do, when to do, why to do... all the planning and execution do's and don'ts... all kinds of complex preparation, yet failing to understand the intelligence in simplicity. That simplicity that lies in allowing nature to do it's job - of allowing our natural flow to lead our actions.

But this post is particularly unique as it tells one that during the peak of action, ought not to think on action... but just surrender in complete awareness by being in the NOW.. in the zone.. Just be and let the action flow unhampered.

A line from the post reminds me of Bruce Lee telling his student ( in Enter the Dragon): "DON'T THINK ... FEEEEEL !"

I salute you for this brilliant post.

    With regards - Ratish

  3. A great port capt.
I have experienced the same in exams.
Even without my knowledge , the answers are written sometimes .
I did not know that i know the answer .
this used to happen in the mathematics paper ...

    Thanks sir ,

    1. hi u,

well this is the meaning of education.

i wrote a 3 hour exam on magnetism for my master mariner's certificate of comptency.

i adjusted compasses as a ship captain for 30 years-, on my ship-- which NO other captain on this planet attempts. they call a professional adjuster.

let truth be told-- when a go up on the moneky island to compensate the compass with a PLUS screw driver-- all I know is unlike magnetic poles attract, like a boy and a girl-- NOTHING ELSE !

you figure out what to do while on your job.

so once i had a uppity surveyor from the indian MMD , telling me that my compass is NO good--by looking at the compass error book--and that as a captain i am NOT supposed to adjust my compass.

he almost shat in his pants when i hissed at him--

OH FU#KIN' YEAH ? TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW OF INDUCED MAGNETISM-- WE BOTH HOLD THE SAME PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCY !

  4. hi m,

let me tell you something wanna be sport guru , Milka Singh who is still crying over why he turned back -- will NEVER EVER know.

On the MICRO SCALE – MACRO quasars and black holes work in a unique way.

A good sports coach is NOT a rustic CHOOT who gets Dronacharya awards without knowing the science behind athelete training. He would have NEVER heard of VO2 max and how to increase athletic performance.

Usain Bolt is a 100 metres world champion because he does ANaerobic training-- the Adenosine Triphosphate-Creatine Phosphate (ATP-CP) system.

While running 200 metres his body switches to the anaerobic glycolysis/lactic acid system.

A marathon runner—after breasting the tape takes his victory lap in a totally different mode.

Both the ANaerobic and aerobic systems are utilized during training and athletic performance.

The athlete has to ensure that they train both power systems to maximize their athletic performance. The anaerobic system is utilized in all-out efforts of exercise lasting up to one minute.

There are two anaerobic power systems available to the body:

The Adenosine Triphosphate-Creatine Phosphate (ATP-CP) system, and
    The anaerobic glycolysis/lactic acid system.

The ATP-CP system is used for efforts lasting less than 10 seconds; while the anaerobic glycolysis system powers efforts longer than 10 seconds, lasting up to a few minutes

Anaerobic training is achieved through: speed and power training

Anaerobic training increases athlete's lactate tolerance the size of the fast twitch muscle fibres.

A higher anaerobic capacity enables an athlete to:

Perform at a higher intensity over a specific distance—and, when required maintain a high intensity for a longer period of time

The aerobic system, also known as aerobic glycolysis, powers continuous steady state exercise longer than three to four minutes.

In the aerobic system energy (ATP) is produced through Pyruvic Acid and Lipid/Protein fragments entering the Kreb Cycle and the Electron Transport Cycle

Aerobic glycolysis is dependent upon the athlete's aerobic capacity, which is their functional capacity for oxygen transport (i.e. distribution of oxygen rich blood to body tissues) and utilization (i.e. ability of muscle to use available oxygen to produce energy). Aerobic training increases aerobic capacity through adaptations to the athlete's oxygen transport and utilization system

Aerobic training increases aerobic capacity through adaptations to the athlete's oxygen transport and utilization systems.

Both the anaerobic and aerobic power systems are important to the athlete ad each needs to be trained to optimize their athletic performance.

  6. Dear Capt Ajit sir,

I am having a passion to be a great golfer in my dreams...on reading this I understood that we are what we repeatedly do...that means a lot of practice. I am 49 years of age. Love to be in the zone just like how Will Smith as Caddie Bagger Vance teaches Capt Junah.... :-)
The legend of Bagger Vance movie is all about a disillusioned war veteran, Captain Rannulph Junah, who reluctantly agrees to play a game of golf. He finds the game futile until his caddy, Bagger Vance, teaches him the secret of the authentic golf stroke which turns out also to be the secret to mastering any challenge and finding meaning in life.
Can you suggest few things to do on the greens to set my passion on action/fire and be a good golfer and enjoy the game ?
Being an ex-defence officer...can play in 3 of the golf courses and have been on and off the game for the past 3 years, fyi.

  10. Sir please clarify.
Do you mean that a state when you continuously stare at an object and everything else become dark and you only see that particular target...
I've tried this thing.. I don't see anything except the target.
